M.C. 202 Series 8 Skins

Thank you Chandalier.

Well, I have to admit that I still have in my mind issues with alpha channel. The fact is that when viewing many photos of Macchi (not only) I see for example fuselage in matt or semimatt, not gloss like in BoS. I know, this is visible only with very close look on plane, and when we are flying it is not visible, but - i want realistic look of planes in close look too. I'm going to attempt a realistic surface to the next camouflage. I hope I can do it.

...i want realistic look of planes in close look too...

I really love this approach ... really you have all my respect for what you are doing in this way...but we know that there are some issue with IL2 engine in this area...

It's really weird that developers didn't allow matt skni since it's commonly knew that, during war time, gloss skins are avoided....

You can actually make skins appear matt ingame. Just look up my tutorial about Alpha Channels and how they work.

Thanks for info JG26_Stuka...I'm interested in uderstanding a bit more about skin in IL2 BoS.

About german skin...what do you think about this one?

Very nice. Do you have some picture from above? For fields on the wings.

Let me check what I can provide...maybe.....

The aircraft should be the Macchi C.202 Folgore MM.9697  flown by Emil Poidinger 2/JG 108..at the following page there are a couple of texture that could come in handy http://asisbiz.com/il2/MC-202/MC-202-JG108.2-Black-16.html

If I could get the following magazine I could have some reference....

Still investigating....

Thank you Vespa. I know the site aisibiz - there are great skins for old IL2, but I have doubts about the accuracy of some camouflage. This one is one of them.

For information only - issues with Alpha channel are removed, new skin will have a new matte surface with different degrees of gloss (according to the material, etc.)

Whaooo!!!! Outstanding news!!! Great work Baron  :clapping: ...can't wait to get your beauty

About the skin...you are right...I'm not sure if the Sunden's profile is correct....in any case I'm looking for more info about that...I'll report....

Baron, for what we know and, according to what you wrot above, the Sundin profile in RLM 74/75 seems to be completely wrong!

By the way....any way to get an accurate tutorial for Phtoshop newbye on alpha channel?

After playing around with the Macchi template some more I felt like the initial version of my personal ride (posted in another thread), although patterned after one of the skins 378 Sq. used in Sicily, just looked a little too "muddy" and un-Italian (i.e., not flashy enough) when done in my muted naval colors, so I came up with an experimental Regia Marina naval "sparkle" camo pattern, intended to resemble the sun-reflecting look of the Mediterranean on a typical sunny day (for use by my Italian aviator from the Regia Marina on detached duty serving with TG-55, primarily tasked with anti-shipping and waterborne supply interdiction missions on the Stalingrad front):

Summer:

Early Winter (the Germans in the unit my Italian pilot was attached to were not very generous to their Italian allies when it came to sharing their scarce supply of white paint, in the early days of the winter):

Late Winter (when supplies of white paint were finally replenished, there was enough left over for the Italian allies):

Beautiful series!

Agree, Sundin`s profil is wrong. Nice, but incorrect. I asked about Mc.202 my colleagues from Plasticmodel club, they should bring me some materials for the German Macchi too.

There is excellent tutorial for Alpha channel and its modifications: http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/15420-custom-alpha-channel-tutorial-gimp-advanced-skinners/

Many thanks for the link Baron.

About german skin...all the Folgore provided to the Luftwaffe were built by Breda factory.

The most famous scheme was the following one that should be quite accurate. The pictyre below is from the book "Camouflage and Markings of ANR 1943-1945" wrote by my friend Ferdinando D'Amico

F2GPjyg.jpg

The scheme above are quite well documented in several pictures...

rGnGNyg.jpg

There are some interesting model on the net with the paintscheme above.

By the way...the paintscheme by Claus Sundin above, from the following link: http://www.forcedlandingcollection.se/LW/LW088-MC202.html is realted to a plane landed at Tomelilla. Even if the Sundin profile looks wrong...in the web site there is a picture that, in my opinion, shows a pintscheme quite similar to the scheme above:

What do you think about that?:

ANR-Macchi-C.202-II.JG108-Black-16-MM969

Another paintscheme is related to the following pictures:

MC202-GERMAN.jpg

Luftwaffe-Macchi-C.202-Trainers-01.jpg

macchi11.jpg

The scheme above is quite similar to the following picture that show a C202 at Borovo (Croatia) 1944

7EcIVjD.jpg

About croatian Folgore, even if there are some profile on the net with croatian insigna, there is no picture evidence of that insigna. For what we know,  the Folgore delivered to the Zrakoplovstvo Nezavisne Države Hrvatske (ZNDH) were from the XII series built by Breda after the German occupation of Italy. They equipped Kroat. JGr 1. These aircraft retained their Luftwaffe markings whilst in service with the unit.

By the way...about croatian Folgore...another interesting picture show clearly Breda scheme...

YKJjWEq.jpg

An interesting detail is the code on fuselage...again, from the D'Amico/Valentini book, there is a color image of the code taken from a Folgore in Tunisia...

qYUEOKm.jpg

Sorry for the long post...I think these details are interesting for historic and accurate painting. There are lot of things to discuss about Folgore (and other italian aircrafts too) scheme...

Nice work. Thx to all that produced these skins.

Hey guys,

I was a little delayed alpha tuning the various panels of the fuselage and wings (in the end this proved unnecessary, visible effect is practically zero) and remodeling lines of the wings. I did MC.202 of the first series, which had not machine guns in the wings - that's why I thought it was necessary. I hope you will like.

Plane: Aer. Macchi C.202 serie 1, '71-8', Regia Aeronautica, 1° Stormo C.T., 17° Gruppo, 71a Squadriglia, November/December 1941, Martubah, Libya

Changes: panel lines on wings, adjusted luminance of Alpha channel, etc.

Hi Baron....I must admit...I couldn't wait to see your new artwork...and the result deserves the wait  :clapping:

Great skin...I'm going to download it and check it in game.

On the first note...the underside gray area should be exaclty what you did in previous skin...like the following image:

GGan8i.jpg

It's the common Macchi scheme.

Congratulation for the great skin!...Keep up the great work. (more after ingame test)

Two more details (Baron, hope you don't mind for that...I really love your skin...you are a talented artist and your artwork deserves our attention to be the best...)

Since this skin is related to first MC.202 series, the First Aid pack access panel was missing...so the skin should have no red cross panel on white fuselage strip..as you can see in the picture below related to the same aircraft and Squadron...in picture pilot with 71^ Squadriglia's mascot.

cP2psnx.jpg

The picture above and the following one clearly show another detail related to the 1st Stormo....the numerals applied in different sizes since the squadriglia number ( 72 in the case of the picture below related to a Macchi of the same Stormo and seire but just repainted with new scheme for the desert operational use ) is smaller then indivdual number.

Thank you for your contribution (damned, i forgot on red cross :) ). It is paradoxical that the photograph that I needed to appear after finishing the skin. Always. Skin from 1° Stormo I made to order - originally I did the exact same skin as shown:

c202ws_1.jpgc202ws_6.jpg

Here is link: http://hyperscale.com/features/2002/c202ws_1.htm I did not like it, and I had doubts about the correctness of camouflage on the model, so I was looking for where they could. Well, the photos that you put in here I have not found. Unfortunately.

Rather it will write straight forward - I need a picture of one of these machines  36_13_13.gif  36_13_6.gif:

Eh eh...I know it could be boring....I'd suggest to ask for infos/pictures before starting a new project (like you did in your post above about 4 Stormo skin )

I knew the link you posted above....you know...sometimes modellers not correctly paint their model...I know it's not easy to deal with italian aircraft/paintscheme...

I'm going to post some pictures about the skins you asked for...

By the way...last skin seems completely matt....IMHO, I'd add just a small reflection...looks at the picture of the 71 Squadriglia above and compare with in-game screenshot...Just my humble opinion...of course.

Here you are...aircraft from the same unit/model/paintscheme (the typical early "poached egg" Macchi paintscheme...officially known as "C8")

The MM.7719, first example of Serie III, assigned to 9th Gruppo of 4th Stormo with 97-9 code. In these period there was a double unit insigna on fuselage: a white horse on fuselage and an iron leg on fin

Great pictures. Thanks Vespa. What about the insignia on bottom side of wing? Is correct when they have black circle with white trim and white fasci? And next - what MM number is on this planes? And what colour is on MM? On pictures looks like grey or so. And letters on rudder looks like black, or very dark grey.

Hi Baron...about insigna on bottom side of wings...let's pictures talk....

The following pictures shows the Folgore of Lt. Annoni seen at Gorizia prior to moveing to Sicily on the 29th september 1941....if I'm not wrong I see black fasces on white background...what do you think?

8csL9eg.jpg

In the following picture Lt. Annoni poses alongside new MC202s delievered to his unit...the aircraft on the background shows its underwing insigna...what do you see?

By the way..interesting to note the propeller....Celeste No.2 applied to the front of eaach blade, with black on the rear face...as reported in some documents...

About MM ...

Aircrafts delieverd, between june and september 1941, to 9° Gruppo of 4th Stormo at Gorizia and its 97a Squadriglia, painted with the three-tone scheme in use at AerMacchi (Verde Mimetico 2, rounded Giallo Mimetico 4 mottling partially covered by Bruno Mimetico  blotches; lower surfaces were painted Grigio Mimetico with the addition of standard national recognition markings of the time: 60 centimetres-wide white fuselage band and a same width chrome yellow band on nose behind the spinner) has serials from MM. 7719 to MM. 7748 (some exception inevitably existed: MM7720 received the overall green "Metropolitan" scheme; MM.7741 - of which many photos survive - received Nocciola Chiaro on Verde Oliva Scuro mottled scheme)

Annoni Folgore should have MM 7742 (no official documentaion so far on my hand)

Novelli Folgore should have MM 7716  (as above...)

Colors of military serials and stencils (type, weights) were normally in blue, possibly Azzurro 11 (Blue No.11 in Table 10)

Great job!! But it doesn't seem a bit too dull? Or am I wrong ...

Hi Guys,

Great work on the skins, photos, etc.  Was not that interest in the MC202 prior to the BOS release.  Now this is my favourite thread!

Posted

@geraki9: in my humble opinion, as stated above, me too I'd like to see a bit more shiny...but let's see what Baron says about that.

@Felix Culpa: I'm pleased that such discussions make some things interesting...I'm sure that when we know what's behind a skin...I mean info like history, pilots...events....even a game becomes more interesting.

Posted (edited)

Just an info about the small triangl on fin with the leg iron...even if is not so famous like other pilots...( Douglas Bader....Hans Ulrich Rudel...) even Italian airforces had their own hero without a leg...he was Ernesto Botto http://surfcity.kund.dalnet.se/italy_botto.htm

botto_4.jpg

The group had been officially christened “Gamba di Ferro” (“Iron Leg”) in his honour after he lost a lag in combat during Spain war. Interesting history at the link I posted above
