She's very nice, handles well both in take off and landing, not to sure about a good gun platform, tried out a few ground attack passes and she seems to waver a bit when trying to keep the sight on target, but i'm sure will be better after some more practice .

See what you think !!

I have trouble lining up the guns. Are you meant to duck down to get that little forward grey ring over the pipper?

Nope, the reflector sight should be enough.

Really enjoying the feel, and the looks, although not that much the rear visibility - but that's not IL2's fault because the real aircraft certainly made it's pilot's feel the same way :-)

Its a Cold aircraft for Italians.... ; )

OK - My big question is.... can she turn with the reds on the deck (not the i16 I know) or is she another LW hit n'runner?

my impression is that she rolls a tad better than the 109 but is no better turner than the 109 F4.

So if you turn with an UFO-1 youre toast.

EDIT: Maybe someone else will disagree and MAY be right. I only did half an hour testing against a friend in an F4.

He could outclimbe me quite easy and the sustained turn i was able to gain on him but it took like 20 circles to get to the better position.

We started co alt co E on eachothers 9 oclock.

EDIT2: Oh and the guns are better snowballs:)

Disclaimer: "Very slightly better turner than the F4" means "Third best turn rate in the entire sim", that's pretty good.

Yes, right behind the 2 russian planes that are the best Turnfighters and combined with the rest of its characteristics, relative to the russian planes - a useless, beautiful pile of crap:P

My 5 cent.

It also has a slightly better climb rate, higher top speed at altitude, long firing time with its, more than adequate, guns and one of the most sturdy airframes in the sim, giving it one of the highest dive speeds and a maximum G-load tolerance of 15G (fifteen!!!)

On paper it should also have a better zoom climb, but I realize the Yak-1 might have an inaccurate advantage there.

The 12,7 mm Bredas are actually quite horrible, the long firing time is absolutely necessary. Of course the 20mm make up for that.

I think the MC.202 is placed between the LaGG-3 and La-5 overall, probably closer to the LaGG-3 even. I would say it's the worst Axis fighter right now.

Well, since it's sharing the podium with the Bf 109 F4, G2 and Fw 190 A3, I'd say that's hardly surprising.

So you guys reckon in term of turning performance (flat ie horizontal).....

1. I16

2. Yak

3. Macchi

4. 109

5. ???

6. ???

7. ???

All we need now is a bit of acceleration ability which you need to disengage from a failed engagement with a yak, which clearly is not lacking in its ability to chase something down (even with full flaps ;) ).

I guess only time will tell.

I can't say how it's in combat, but the Safat 12,7 are well modelled for my opinion. As we know only the Macchi 205 III Serie could carry 2xMG151 as default armament.

We can't ask more from 12,7 even if with explosive rounds as the italian ones.

Don't forget about this: italian pilots couldn't chose between Friedrich or Folgore, so we have to fly it in the best way possibile, and turn is not a good way to fly Macchi. Macchi fighters did provide good manovrability but they were however pure Boom&Zoomers.

So don't stay in turn with Russian fighters and don't compare it with other aircrafts. Macchi was Macchi, a different way to fly and combat.

Team play is a must.

Thank god we dont have to.

Even if it cant do anything very well its a very nice plane to torch for the VVS. And as such the Macci is a very good addition that enrichens some players gamingexperience:)

I spent about a half hour with the MC.202 yesterday and I have to say that, aside from the weak MG armament, its quite a fun fighter to fly. I practiced some crazier moves after flying it around normally for a bit and it really responds in a fairly predictable way. The stall is not quite as violent as the one in IL-2 1946 but the rest of the flight model feels at least a bit familiar.

It flies a bit like a 109 which makes it easy to jump in to immediately. It does quite well but you definitely need some energy fighting techniques. Don't stick around to turn fight I-16s :)

I ask you politely.

Can you guys stop talking about things such "BnZ planes" ?

It's like if, when a plane does not turn too well at low speed, or not as well as his opponents, HOP !! It means it's a BnZ plane !

As if "turnfighting" and "BnZ" were the only things that exist.

Improvise guys, improvise...

I really do not understand where you guys get the idea that the Yak turns so much better than the Macchi btw. I played it quite extensively yesterday and yes, in a long and sustained turn at lower speeds, the Yak will eventually have the advantage due to the flaps, but as long as there was some speed involved, I could easily turn inside the Yak and stay on long enough to shoot it down (especially when I gave it some flaps, which work very very well on this plane). Mind you, that completely changes if you stick on the Gunpods, which is an extremely bad idea in my opinion, unless you're going for IL-2s and Pe-2s. And since you can run the boost virtually forever as long as you manage the manifold pressure accordingly, I found it extremely easy to outperform and outmaneuver a Yak in many situations. No, it does not have the enginepower that a 109 offers but the good speed and dive, combined with the (in my opinion) extremely good maneuverability almost seem to make this plane perfect for taking out Russians. It almost seems a little too good for my tastes (not talking about historical accuracy, just in terms of game balance).

Edit: And considering the armament: I shot down 3 IL-2s in one sortie yesterday, so I cannot agree on any "inefficiency" of the guns either.

Because of this statement, the italians did outurned I-16 in the civil Spanish War, even if Rata was far better than Cr.32 because of its B&Z capabilities. Only the Germans understood this. Everything was changed in the air war. The Italians did pay later in the Battle of Britain an high price because of the Spanish Civil War victories.....Cr.42 ecc. ecc..

Macchi 202 is a mix of different traditions, aerobatic post WW1 and new air war concept, devoloped later in the Italian Serie 5.

Macchi is a Boom and Zoomer with a good "turning" capabilities even if the Safat 12,7 don't give you much time in a turn fighting. It's a game, so we can turn.

Veltro: What I think Ze_Hairy was getting at is the false dichotomy of 'turnfighter' vs. 'BnZer'. From a tactical standpoint TnB and BnZ are only two of a multitude of options.

In reality all WW2 fighters were 'energy-fighters' of some kind, meaning that regardless of their individual capabilities, they were all playing some kind of energy game in a dogfight.

Exactly.

Adapt your plane to the one you're fighting against, use the advantages of your plane.

There's no "BnZ plane", no plane has been built to "dive and zoom away", that's ridiculous.

This is a not too well thought out statement. There is a video on YouTube called "The art of the kill" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCFMX5z-ed4 where the instructor explains in very conscious words why improvisation is not a good idea in the air. I recommend people to watch in spite it's meant for jet fighter pilots.

You guys are wrong about the I-16. It has a fantastic initial turn but it then bleeds speed like crazy. I have lost count of the times I've been out-turned by an F4 who has stayed with it. At 250kmh (which the rata soon drops to) the turn is bad and the plane is very unstable. If you stay in a tight turn after the first circle you will win but I see so many Messers zoom up and away.

It surely contributes to the Luftwaffe Space Program.

Last night, I did have a Robert S. Johnson moment in my Lagg facing a 202 (piloted by TheElf) jumping me at 5,500m.

Knocking my oil out on a head on pass I was forced to dive towards our airfield, he caught up eventually and let me have it.

I out rolled it a couple times to cheat death but a few minutes and about 600 bullet holes later my Lagg finally belly landed with my pilot barely alive.

I guess I had a very Italian meatball dinner.

It may not have been built with boom and zoom in mind but the 109 was used that way by most of the Aces. Check out what Mr Hartmann had to say at around 1:25.

Of course, Hit & Run attacks were often used by Germans, to stay in formation during attacks.

Yes tovarisch... no.

Do you know 109s were doing "BnZ" on IL-2s ? /sarcasm

Whatever your plane, when you have spotted an enemy formation below you, will you sacrifice your energy to start tight maneuvering, or you will make Hit & Run attacks ?

Does this means you're flying a "BnZ plane" ?
