MP Airfield Etiquette

Ok guys. If you're going to play on the Expert servers, then operate your plane like an Expert.

That means using the taxiways and runways for their intended purpose.

Don't use multiplayer as a place to practice ground handling, unless it's a training server.

In Expert you should already have mastered the skill of takeoff and landing as well as handling your plane on the ground. There are plenty of other servers with different skill levels expected and encouraged but on the Expert servers without air start points it's expected that you're going to take off and land properly. If it's just quick action you're looking for there's other servers for this.

Don't hog the runway and sit there motionless for several minutes for whatever reason. Go.

The game seems in need of some improvement with regard to airfield navigation help and the ground effect modeling should turn your plane into a cartwheeling fireball if you attempt to take off over snowy rough ground. But so far that's not been addressed.

That is all. As you were.

Also i would ask don't hit full throttle and race of across the field ploughing into an aircraft spawned in front of you. Look around the nose it only takes a second

Oh yeah. Training Servers. Great idea!

Instant action "dogfight" servers. Great idea too.

There's not one size that fits all here.

But when you're in the house, play by the house rules.

I'm not sure why it's somehow been unofficially decided that Wings of Liberty is the only server anyone ever seems to play on. But as far as I ever see it doesn't run the quick action type missions. So if that what people are looking for go get on a server like that. I'm up for that many times too but those servers are always empty.

I agree with most - use taxi and runways properly please. I'd also say try to land in the pattern in expert and normal servers. Nothing more frustrating than nursing home a broken AC, setting up properly then have someone land against the pattern while you are on close final and don't have the power for a go around.

As for the ground handling complaint, meh.

I'll add on to this...

Use your Navigation Lights while you are

  • Taxiing
  • Taking off
  • Landing

This allows everyone in the air to see you better to prevent collisions. I've seen it plenty of times and it's happened to me.

Also, if you see a heavily damaged aircraft with his navigation lights on do not shoot him. It's not your kill, you did no work for that kill, let him crash land and move on to an actual threat.

I'm pretty sure there were no such rules on the Eastern Front. If I see something flying that is from the other team, I'll shoot it down without mercy.. no matter the state it's in. I've never been given such mercy from all the years I've flown. I've been fooled too many times by a "damaged" aircraft with its lights on trying to land, then turn against me and shoot my arse down.

In Rise of Flight such chivalry is more appropriate for WWI

WWII not so much.

In il-2'46 the only way for some servers enforce "ground etiquete" was with physical barriers around taxiways.

Without this was always every man for himself, in either direction.  :)

Of course some players do the right thing, even done takeoff in formation.

There's always server bans. This behavior would probably get you banned on some DCS servers Edited by SharpeXB

Would it be helpful if the Wings of Liberty, denoted Expert Server within the heading?  For someone new...they might not know what the settings are in there for their first time in there..... or am I missing something here?  Also....is there a way to review the taxiway layouts prior to joining the server.  I totally agree with adhering to proper procedures...I've been away from MP for so long because of my sat connection at home, but I'm trying to setup MP use at the office....So excuse me..for asking some dumb questions..

Yeah I agree with those.

The server settings should show on the browser like they do in RoF. Obviously that makes things confusing. Actually I'll rephrase the OP. It's not something that necessarily applies to the "Expert" difficulty level. It applies to all servers with missions that feature cold starts. There are plenty of servers that have runway and air starts. Generally I assume the realistic servers that run the cold starts do that to set a certain style of gameplay. So it's just asking to play by the rules that are set up there. If you don't want to taxi or don't want to spend the time doing it, just find a server with those kind of missions on it.

And there needs to be a solution in the game for airfield navigation.

Both of those have already been posted in the suggestions thread.

Awesome! Thank you! Edited by SharpeXB

Hahahahaha.... I flew with SYNGD the other day. Like a real german gentleman, he taxied flawlessly to the runway, took off and we went on our sortie. After a few successful kills we rtb'd and landed. All the boxes were ticked and I expected him to spawn out and restart. He then proceeded to taxi all the way back to an empty bay, turned his plane around and switched off his engine. He looked like an AI plane in its bay, it was so funny to see. One of the deadlier pilots I've come across in this sim, I can see clearly why he is so good, its because he is meticulous at what he does.

I must say I am often guilty of flying off snow and 4x4 terrain.  I apologise for any inconvenience I may have caused anyone and I will endeavour to improve my airfield etiquette.

This should be part of the Manual, and the Manual should be part of BoS not a separate download

Proper taxiing is a mark of pilots maturity and profesionalism. Those individuals taking off right across the strip in whatever direction just leave me with left eyebrow raised and grumbling smtg like noob and such :P

This has been going on since before I took up flight sims in 2002. I would suggest the creation of an invisible ground object. One which when flown into, causes the player to immediately disconnect from the server...

Big thanks to HR_zal and his squadron for providing that great resource!

See what's ridiculous about this behavior is that in this case the runway is immediately over to the left. But this guy here can't be bothered with even taking the time to turn left.

If you don't want to taxi, don't play on servers that require it.

That's quite some luck you have. I just go by the 1946 etiquette, makes it fun for everyone.

Last night someone joined and didn't know it was an Expert server. Noneless, he said he's never going back to Normal.
