Il-2 BoS Commander AAR and RIP Thread

Hi,

I guess some of you must be using The Il-2 Commander app by now so that means that some of you must be itching to post some AAR's here for the community to read right? Warhamm even included a button to copy the entire log (conveniently encoded in forum BB code for you already) and link to the forum so that you can post your logs so of course it does! Don't be shy, tell us how your pilot is going. For those of you who don't know what I am taking about, an AAR is an After Action Report where you can creatively tell the story of your virtual pilot. (And post pictures/videos as well)

As an example, I lost my first pilot today:

Arno Ungers was born in Luderitz, Namibia on Dec 26th 1913.

His father, Ludwig, was an engineer who had moved to Africa to work in diamond mining. He brought his young wife to Africa with him and shortly afterwards they had a baby boy, Arno.

The family did not stay in Africa for long due to the events of WW1, they returned to Leipzig, Germany an 1914 and Arno's father enlisted in the cavalry. He was killed in the Battle of the Marne in a skirmish.

Arno was raised by his mother,  Laura, who never re-married. Times were hard for the Ungers, the mines in Namibia were confiscated after the Versailles Treaty and Laura was forced to take up work whatever work she could to support them.

Luckily Arno was a healthy and bright young lad and as soon as he was able he helped his mother keep their household afloat. It was largely by virtue of hard work and charity that Arno was able to be educated in Leipzig and the headmaster there said that he was a quiet and thoughtful young man, used to responsibility and hard work. Arno prospered in school and eventually managed to secure a position for himself in Leipzig University, the school attended by Goethe, Wagner, Nietzsche and many other famous Germans.

He was to begin studying engineering in 1933 but the reformation of the RLM and the birth of the Luftwaffe caused his life to take a different path and he ended up learning to fly and this took him to Spain in 1936 with the Condor Legion where he flew with Jagdgruppe 88 in the Spanish Civil War. He flew with the unit during their period with the He-51 and when they transitioned to the Bf-109.

Shortly after serving in Spain Arno returned to Germany and was badly injured in a landing accident in one of the new 109's. He was assessed as unfit to fly by the medical board and assigned to ground duties pending re-evaluation. It wouldn't be until Operation Barbarossa in 1941 that Arno would see action again.

A shortage of pilots after the campaigns in Europe and the Mediterannean and single minded determination meant thyat Arno managed to convince the medical board to re-assign him to flying duties where he was posted to I/JG-3 after a conversion course on the new 109 F-2. He arrived at the Eastern Front too late to see much action but managed to destroy an I-16 near Moscow for his first victory before the unit was posted to Comiso in Sicily for operations against Malta. In this action Arno scored a further two victories before JG-3 went back to the East for the Battle of Stalingrad.

Battle was joined by other 109's and I saw one aircraft shot down in flame but could not identify the type. I attacked one Yak after identifying him by the centerline radiator, hit his left wing and engine and climbed away. Last time I saw him he was heading West with 3 109's on his tail. I returned to base because of low fuel and damaged the left wing on landing.

Rook 2 and I escorted 6 x He-111 bombers to attach enemy concentrations crossing a river North of the Kalach area.

On the way to the target Rook 2 attacked a bomber and claims that he shot it down. I ordered Rook 2 to stay in formation and did not see his target at any time.

Over the target we met 2 x Yaks, they made a head on pass at us and I almost collided with one when we mergerd. After climbing away I saw Rook 2 attack and destroy one of the Yaks, it went down in flames.

I spotted the second Yak heading towards the bombers and chased him, the bombers opened fire and drove him away and O closed in on his tail and shot him down. I saw him bail out and his aircraft crash, Rook 2 also saw this.

Four of us took of to escort 3 x He-111's. On the way to the target we met at leat 3 Yaks and some 109's in a fight. I got a burst at one in a dive but had to break off when another 109 from a different squadron shot past me at dangerous range.

I rejoined the bombers to find that a formation of LaGG-3's were attacking, Rook 2 and I intervened but there were more LaGGs that I did not see, one of them damaged my engine and I force landed in the field with minor damage.

A bad day, three aircraft out of four were lost from our flight,

Mission Task:
-------------------------------------------------
Evening recon of Southern Sector
-------------------------------------------------
Mission Debrief:
-------------------------------------------------
Mission was conducted alone to recon Platonov, Stalinsky and Buzinovka at 2000hrs.

On the way to Platonov I encountered a fight between some 109s Yaks and Il-2s. I tried to attack a Cturmovik but could not maintain visual contact.

I could see the tracers of the fight continue over Platonov but nothing more. I saw much enemy convoy traffic on the roads surrounding Platonov but took little fire from the ground.

At Stalinksy I spotted some units deployed in the field, it looked to be mainly AAA defenses.

Buzinovka itself was quiet but I did a run over the airfield as requested. It appears as though the squadrons there have been re-inforced with LaGG-3' since there were a lot of them parked in dispersal around the field.

Over Buzinovka I took a hit from medium calibre AAA that damaged my right wing, shattered some of the canopy and hit my engine. II was also wounded lightly in the left arm by shrapnel. I could hear the sound of metal on metal from up front but was able to nurse my aircraft up to 4,000m where I found that the engine did not show any signs of failing. After assessing the damage I returned to base and landed safely.

-------------------------------------------------
Mission Task:
-------------------------------------------------
Escort of He-111
-------------------------------------------------
Mission Debrief:
-------------------------------------------------
Myself and wingman escorted 3 x He-111 over the East bank of the Volga.

Over the target we were intercepted by LaGG-3s. I managed to shoot one down while my wingman tangles with the other. Unfortunately my wingman was shot down, I did not see a parachute.

I chased the remaining LaGG who was trying to attack the bombers. I closed in on him as he began firing and had to be careful to avoid hitting the He-111 he was attacking as well as avoiding return fire from the gunners. Unfortunately the Russki managed to take down a He-111 before I damaged him enough to break off. He was very determined and showed no sign of faltering when he could have broke off his attack to save himself.

At this point I had expended all fo my ammunition so I covered the bombers home and came in to land. As I was preparing to land I noticed AAA fire and saw an enemy fighter (Yak?) coming in to attack. He landed some hits that did minor damage to my right wing but I got down safely. Our defenses dealt with the enemy plane.

Mission Task:
-------------------------------------------------
Ground Attack
-------------------------------------------------
Mission Debrief:
-------------------------------------------------
Intelligence reports the loss of 6 x Bf-109s during a ground attack sortie South of Stalingrad.

Witnesses say that heavy fighter opposition overwhelmed the Luftwaffe in this action, one pilot, believed to be Oberleutnant Arno Ungers, fought to the last.

In 1952 the full story of the dsemise of Arno Ungers became known when his wingman was released from a Soviet POW camp and returned to Germany.

He says:

"I was shot down early in the engagement by a Yak myself but bailed out and saw what happened to Arno from the ground. While fending off repeated attacks from Yak fighters Arno managed to destroy two artillery emplacements despite taking damage to his aircraft. from one of the Yaks.

The escort of 109F-4s did their best to keep the Yaks at bay but eventually succumbed, leaving Arno alone with the two remaining Yaks. I saw Arno struggle with his damaged aircraft, even managing to take some shots at one Yak but the second one scored an incredibly lucky hit on Arno's plane. It must have killed him instantly since the aircraft just went straight into the ground."

Next time I might add some screenshots, or video. I'm working on a title animation for my re-vamped channel so it might be a while before I can make any videos. Hope you enjoy the read.

Well, he will have fun playing football after a hard day in the salt mines now. Downed by his own side too!

What rotten luck. :(

What do you do for recon missions Zami? I know it says to do a free flight but that's a bit dull. I just send my own guys home and do a low level recon of whatever looks interesting (Big towns, places where where the armies supply lines probably are or airfields etc) on the map and if I run into enemy panes, well, I try to avoid them but so be it if we fight.

Yeah, friendly fire has never happened to me before in BoS. But partly my fault because I stayed behind the Sturmovik too long at low speed while wingmen made attacks. Too bad for Gerd.

Nice utility for us.  Thanks for sharing your stories guys....I have held off just a bit until this tool gets perfected a bit...But I think I'm going to give it a go, tonight.  Also...this just in...Muller was picked up early this morning wearing a skirt and some heels stumbling across the frozen tundra.  It's still a mystery where he found the nylons he was wearing....He's at HQ getting debriefed.....

Yeah, it`s a nice tool. It doesn`t replace proper campaign what I expect to have for this game at some point in future. But it adds needed feature to my gaming, glad to take actual orders for a change.

Warhamm is clearly developing it further which is great.

Oh, I knew it! Muller is a smart man, he would not let himself to be captured. Clever disguise I must say

If Muller is getting debriefed, at least he's still wearing mens underwear. But not for long it would appear.....

I flew couple of quick missions but as you said it is bit dull. Then I mostly skipped it. But I like your idea, I think I`ll do that next time with recon mission.

Escort a flight of 3 Il-2 Sturmoviks to attack busy supply route 50km behind enemy lines with 4 Yak-1.
-------------------------------------------------
Mission Debrief:
-------------------------------------------------
On route to target we encountered several Stukas. I must have had pretty green and stubborn wingmen because they attacked Stukas ignoring my orders to stay on mission and follow me.
With my wingmen fighting Stukas I escorted alone Sturmoviks to the supply route.
It was protected by four Messerscmitts, I attacked immediately to draw them away from ground pounders. After fighting for a while luckily my wingmen started to drop in to the battle one by one. Two more Bf-109s appeared and joined battle. In the following skirmish I shot down one Bf-109 and my wingmen one other. One Messerschmitt hit the ground while evading. One Sturmovik and two Yaks were lost. Sturmoviks destroyed several supply trucks.

But when we got near enemy positions, there were heavy air traffic. I saw Ju-87, He-111 and Bf-109 in action. We were engaged in fierce battle with multiple enemy fighters and my wingman got shot down. Never saw a chute, he probably was killed in cockpit. I got hits on 2 Messerschmitts but never saw them going down. Our bombers dropped their bombs and got out unharmed. After losing enemy fighters I followed them home in one piece.

We hurried to the target area and met there 6 He-111 at 6000 meters flying west. They were escorted by 2 Messerschmitts. We attacked bombers from the side, almost immediately my wingman was shot down by enemy fighters. He parachuted. I made two passes on bombers and managed to get one in flames. When preparing third attack I was surprised by one Bf-109, got serious hits to the engine and wounded. I decided to jump because my vision was blurred and I was in friendly territory.

Mission Debrief:
-------------------------------------------------
Weather was poor, heavy snowing and strong winds. We flew at 300 meters to intercept. We spotted 2 Ju-52 and escorting fighter. I ordered my wingman to cover me as I went after transporters. He engaged Messerschmitt and shot it down after a while. I was too cocky and approached Ju-52 with too low speed directly from behind. Enemy gunner hit my engine and I was wounded again. At the same time I shot at the Junkers but I didn`t see it go down. He was trailing smoke though. Wingman downed the Bf-109. I had to do crash landing. Mission failed.

-------------------------------------------------
Mission Debrief:
-------------------------------------------------
Started patrolling around Zety and pretty soon spotted incoming formation of 3 He-111 bombers at 6000 meters. We quickly took intercept course and reached Heinkels pretty easy. There were no enemy fighters around so we could concentrate entirely to the bombers. After several attacks I got one down and all Heinkels were damaged. No one from our flight was damaged. Unfortunetaly enemy did some damage to the supply depot.

On the way to the target we passed flights of He-111, Ju-87 and their escort Messerschmitts. All my wingmen engaged enemy against my orders and got shot down in the process.  I was the only plane protecting Sturmoviks when they bombed enemy positions. Luckily we encountered no enemy fighters in the area. One Il-2 shot down by AAA. Mission was completed but with heavy casulties.

Mission Task:
-------------------------------------------------
Attack enemy Rynok airfield. Strenght 2 Yak-1 equipped with rockets. Escort is provided by 4 LaGG-3.
-------------------------------------------------
Mission Debrief:
-------------------------------------------------
Journey to the enemy airfield was peaceful. We closed from the west and noticed 4 Messerscmitts circling above enemy airfield. LaGGs attacked them and we attacked with rockets parked He-111 bombers. I missed my targets with first rockets, my wingman hit couple of fuel trucks. I made a second attack and managed to destroy few He-111. Then I decided to head home, it was too dangerous to hang around anymore. I called for wingman to follow but he was surrounded by enemy fighters and couldn`t follow right away. I headed out of the area and notised few Stukas flying to south with two escorts. I followed Stukas at low altitude  and made an attack from belov. I got greedy and stayed too long there. I didn`t see one Messerschmitt that was quite close. He shot me dead with long burst...

It's always the one you don't see that gets you. Good report Zami and well done surviving 10 sorties. It's not easy, especially with those disobedient wingmen!

Yeah, I am starting to grow grey hair because of those stubborn wingmen
