No_85_Gramps Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 Did you upgrade, or do a clean install? To get the free upgrade you must first install it as an update. After that you can do a clean install. I have been using 10 as my everyday OS since one or two releases prior to the official release. I have had no real issues with 10, maybe two or three CTD in over 2 months with BOS. You may want to visit http://www.tenforums.com/and look around. Lots of people have big problems but that forum is the best I found for information on installing and using 10. The least you need to do is to make a system back-up of your current OS, to fall back on it you have problems with 10.
SharpeXB Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 I just finished setting up BoS in W10 First I had a clean install of W7 before applying the update. No trouble at all with my CH controllers, TrackIR or anything. Connecting the devices goes smoothly. I hooked up the CH stuff in the order they were listed in "joy_1" etc. BoS remembered them except for the throttle. No trouble so far.
Dakpilot Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 (edited) Took the plunge, standard update from Win7, no clean install, eveything works smoothly, only single thing was need to re-map throttle axis, fingers crossed, so far all good and liking it Maybe even a small performance increase with BoS, but probably was latest Win 10 drivers Cheers Dakpilot Edited September 25, 2015 by Dakpilot

Not only in BoS but the OS in general. Even boot time is faster than a clean Win7 install. Not regretting the update, to put it like that:) Best, Klas
SharpeXB Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 Watch out. A Windows 10 clean install will mean having to reinstall your motherboard drivers. Just figured that one out...

I've heard some folks have had to deal with that. In my own experience I did not have to re-install the MB drivers. Those with a custom build/home build machine probably will see this more often.

I would advice everyone who is doing a clean install to list and download all needed drivers beforehand, and put them on a USB stick. In some cases, the network module on the motherboard needs a manual driver to function, and in cases like that, it is good to be prepared.

Always be prepared for the unknown effects of doing a clean install!
SharpeXB Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 I'm a total computer dummy and I was able to do the upgrade with no trouble. Except this part about the drivers. That's where I needed tech support. Otherwise BoS and all my peripherals function just fine. I had trouble with the CH controllers getting renumbered "Joy1" etc by BoS. Not in Rise of Flight through. Maybe it was those drivers not being installed? Anyways after a few remapping efforts they seem to have stabilized.
kissklas Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 I have that problem sometimes. It happens if you switch USB ports, and generally when I add/change hardware inside my PC. I think that's just Windows setting up the list of devices differently when things change. Maybe there is a way to arrange controller order inside the control panel, so in game remapping won't be necessary? If anyone knows, do tell:)
SharpeXB Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Big problem with Windows 10, watch out! Windows 10 will not keep your joystick numbers (joy0 joy2 ect) constant. It will change them on its own whenever you plug in a new device, even a keyboard, change a device or when it runs a Windows update. Windows 7 and Vista would keep those joy# assignments so long as you didn't unplug the device but that's not the case with Windows 10. They will change sometimes even if you do nothing. Having them plugged in via a hub vs directly makes no difference. This is obviously a big problem for BoS (and RoF) since they only recognize the controllers this way and not by name.

SharpeXB Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 what? i have no problem with my joystick. (maybe i dont understant it corectly)Do you only have one joystick? If so then the whole numbering issue probably won't be a problem. When you have multiple controllers, Windows assigns them a number joy1 joy2 etc. Windows 10 won't keep those assignments the way 7 or Vista did. Then they won't work in BoS since the game assigns them by that joy#
No_85_Gramps Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 The only time I ran into this issue was when I was installing the Technical Previews, once I installed the RTM ver of 10 I have not experienced it. Part of the issue could be, purely a guess here, due to "hot" plugging/swapping USB devices. I know the standard for USB is it should work, but you never know. I know unplugging an external USB drive w/o ejecting it, or powering down your system, can create issues with the drive, I know that firsthand. I recently plugged in the VKB T-rudder pedals and BOS sees them as joy2, my X55 throttle as joy1, and the stick as joy0. I have connected, and disconnected, various devices w/o any problems. I'm not saying it is not a problem, just something to consider if you are contemplating installing Windows 10. My recommendation to anyone attempting to install 10 is to clone your current system to a second hard drive and then disconnect the clone. Windows 10 runs incredibly well for some, like me, but others have had nothing but problems. I expect now that I may have jinxed myself...
