carve_gybe1 Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 Hi All So I have been running IL-BOS on 15.4 laptop with Nvidia GTX 680M...on some resolution lower than 1920 x 1080... ...and I could not find the enemy.. so my posterior has been lit on fire fairly regularly. I also had Sweet FX installed and gamma set to .65. I also did that whole .ini file edit, but that's gone now anyway. When I switched to 1920 x 1080 I lost some FPS and I am still dogfighting blind. I got rid of SweetFX anyway as it was crashing my system on occasion and didn't really help with spotting. So the next step is to get a larger monitor. I have no hope of running at resolution higher than 1920 x 1080 and having sufficient frame rate. So what are my choices at this resolution? Should I go for a larger monitor (say 27 inch) with lower pixel pitch or the other way around. I've been reading about the 16:10 vs 16:9 aspect ratio conundrum and I am not sure how relevant this is in this case. I also wonder what will make me see a plane better: the same number of dots condensed to a smaller area or spread out. It is a size vs contrast question. The response may have less to do with IT and more with nature of human sight. Alternatively, perhaps the answer is to get a high-contrast, large monitor? Any advice would be appreciated. Carve
SharpeXB Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 27" 1080x1920 is a pretty decent size for BoS and most other flight sims. You should be able to spot other aircraft very well with that. 1
6./ZG26_Emil Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 I use a 1440p monitor and generally have no issues but it's also worth thinking about making sure you have a good stand that places the monitor at eye level as well many of the cheap/free ones don't especially if you are tall.
carve_gybe1 Posted July 16, 2015 Author Posted July 16, 2015 But: http://www.tested.com/tech/pcs/453848-buying-your-new-monitor-part-one-what-get/ What now?
SharpeXB Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 But: http://www.tested.com/tech/pcs/453848-buying-your-new-monitor-part-one-what-get/ What now? He's too lax on graphics card requirements"You’ll want a higher-end video card if you have a 2560x1440 panel, like a GTX 670 or Radeon 7970." Ummm those cards will not handle 1440p unless you are willing to turn down the graphics settings a lot. I had a GTX 670 at least but not the 7970. It was fine for 1080p though. My own opinion is that ultra level graphics and a constant 60 FPS are far more appealing than extra resolution. Except possibly in flight sims. Otherwise going beyond 1080p requires a steep investment in GPUs. 1440 is really an enthusiast level resolution. 4K is an insane enthusiast level ;-) BoS does look just fine at 1080p. Obviously bigger and sharper is better. It's just a matter of budget.

Well mine are Korean made and more budget even though they were expensive. The brand is Hazro and they're ok; I have two 2560x1600 and a single 2560x1440. Would I recommend getting one...hmmm not 100% sure. They're good panels but not made particularly well, the odds of getting stuck pixels are probably higher than a high end panel. I got them because I was in desperate need for a multiple monitor setup for work (not simming). If it was me now and I had the cash I would for for an Asus G-Sync 27" 1440p monitor which guarantees no stuck pixels etc (from overclockers) and has g-sync which sounds very cool but they aren't cheap. and Sharp is right yu will need a good card. I ran it on a single 780GTX which worked perfectly so that's the benchmark.
