Mastermariner Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 Now don't take this wrong. I'm not trying to start a pissing-contest but I find this article interesting and highly relevant to the sim-flights sector. I always presumed that the reason for the heavy overrepresentation of developers from Russia or ex Soviet nations was due to the lower cost of labour but perhaps it's simply because they are (also) so much better than their western counterparts? http://sputniknews.com/russia/20150715/1024631594.html?utm_source=short_direct&utm_medium=short_url&utm_content=2Sm&utm_campaign=URL_shortening Interesting! unreasonable Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 One of the reasons programmers old enough to be trained in the USSR during the bad old days were supposed to be very good was that they had such limited computer time that they were forced to think through exactly how their code would work in their heads and on paper first. Their code would then be elegant and economical. By contrast, western programmers with plenty of computer time would tend to wing it and fix problems latter, leading to bloated spaghetti coding. Or so the story goes. Now that computer time is cheap and plentiful almost everywhere I wonder if this advantage can persist.
Finkeren Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 I normally hate generalizing based on nationality, but the story of Soviet/Russian technology in the 20th Century (and the 21st?) really seems to be all about trying to do more with less, and quite often succeeding spectacularly (though sometimes at a high cost in colateral damage)
Original_Uwe Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 (edited) In soviet russia, computer codes you! I know I know, Im sorry I just had to. Edited July 15, 2015 by forsale
Mastermariner Posted July 15, 2015 Author Posted July 15, 2015 Yes, I admit I lost the question in my previous post- How long will it last? We all know that we ,as flight simmers, owe a great deal to the collapse of the Soviet Union, many talented programmers suddenly found themselves without a job and one of them decided to put his knowledge in use to fore fill his passion for history and aviation. Thanks to low wages he managed to succeed and survive for a long time and the result is what we are flying here today. Flightsims are no goldmine and the line of them, very good ones to, produced by western companies quickly disappeared from the shelves. Expensive to produce and very limited demand. The only survivors' seems to be produced in the east. Now the Q is for how long and then what? Now programmers will be in high demand and the cost will surge . It takes more than programming skills to create a FS, passion and interest for the subject is vital, therefore I don't believe that the task is transportable over the globe to new low cost nations. But then, I have been wrong before! Master
