How to avoid colliding escort fighters?

Has anyone here an advice how to avoid collisions of escort fighters when command:cover is used? In my missions sooner or later I always have fighters crashing into each other because of their hectic fligt maneuvers. I've tried different formation density settings, but this doesn't help.

The only solution I've found so far, is to split up the escort fighters into pairs. The first pair gets a cover command for the bombers, the second pair a cover command for the first fighter pair, the third for the second pair and so on.
It's a little complicated, but automatically gives all aircraft groups a small altitude difference which helps to avoid collisions.
