Hey all!

I've finally decided to give it a try and make my own due I feel like that without it I have a huge set back.

Right now I am ordering parts and have a slight problem. The only SFH485P IR LED I could find is this one here <-link

The problem with it is that it doesn't have the flat LED rather its oval. I did read somewhere tha you can use sand paper to make it flat..and well not sure if I should give it a try..Don't really wanna break it or something.

Cheers

It'll work fine.

If you do decide to sand it, don't sand it so low that you interfere with the diode inside.

If I don't sand it, will it work as good as the flat one ? I mean will I  have any limitations ?

Thank you for the link, I did try to register and ask questions about homemade trackIR there but I was getting some errors.. :)

It's just a tip...

Nobodie, before to purchase, calculate the cost. (not only the pieces, too the hardware and your time to do)

One trackir clip it's 40€ aprox, and run smooth, better that any home-made-Ir led-system (for my experience, I use Freetrack with original trackir clip).

And in other side, if you can, use wiimote like webcam, if you've a Nintendo Wii, or PlayStation cam if you have one....with this, freetrack run like trackir.

The curved end of the LED is to focus the light. It seems they work better, for our purposes, sanded flat as it spreads the output. Just like Space-Ghost said - don't sand down to far, just till it is flat, and then polish the end using a fine grit sandpaper, or get one of those polishing sticks the ladies use for their fingernails.

What Gramps said - for your project you will want to sand them down a bit and take a finer grit to the flattened end.

FWIW: You may also be able to use visible red LEDs of the same voltage rating specified and sidestep removing the IR filter in the cam. Works on a Logitech C170. I seem to have lost the part number for the one I am using unfortunately or I would post it.

I already have ps3 camera, 40euros + a trackir clip that will mostlikely brake really fast , from the feedback I've seen on the internet it just costs me too much. To build it I will probably spend less than 10 euros. And the time to make it..well one hour. So even if I fuck it up I still lost only 10 euros , not 40.  If I had money / could afford it I would probably just buy the Delans clip but I can't so I have to build my own.

Also to add I've found this  FLAT led , will this work fine ? Without me sanding it etc ?

Looks like they might work. What you are looking for is a wider viewing angle than the standard LED.

Thank you all for helping me out! Right one I have to buy all of the materials I need due some sites charge more for shipping than the value of the whole package.

That crap drives me crazy sometimes. Here's a pic of the two I've built. The one on the headset is my current use one. The other one was just completed and is an experiment to see how well it works with different dimensions.

FWIW, I've had a Trackclip Pro for a long while now and it still hasn't broken... It's also worth noting that I haven't stepped on it and its survived two small children as well.
