smink1701 Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Had just a few minutes to play this morning and had a few questions... F11, when I use my plane just flies out of the picture. I thought this was some new fly-by mode. Am I using it wrong? HDR, on or off I don't see much difference. SSAO, when off images seem a little brighter and crisper. Am I missing anything?

SYN_Mike77 Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 F11 is a free camera. Mainly used by video makers. I don't see a huge difference with SSAO but I think my rig handled it nicely anyway. I never got the "muddy goggles" effect that people complained about with SSAO. HDR, again not much difference. Frame rates seem a little better with both off but maybe frame rates a tad better than before the update overall?
smink1701 Posted July 7, 2015 Author Posted July 7, 2015 It's a free camera mode that you can pan around with the WASD keys and such. Sorry ... What are the WASD keys?
SharpeXB Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Sorry ... What are the WASD keys?The lettered keys on your keyboard.W, A, S and D 2
Weegie Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Is it just me or are the keys entirely consistent in the F2 Vs F11 modes My mouse seems to work one way in F2 then the opposite in F11, I'm still trying to figure what is what
SYN_Mike77 Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 After a little more testing, what looks best on my rig is SSAO off and HDR on. Things look a little crisper and a little brighter to me. I also have the terrain bubble set to maximum.

I also have the terrain bubble set to maximum. Think this is what my setup will be too. Might give 3 screens a try again as well. The SSAO really looks muddy on 3 screens, plus maybe a fps boost too.

SharpeXB Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 muddy? must be a ATI thing..I'm using Nvidia and I see the effect. It's not as noticable on Ultra and it's switched off by default on the lower graphic settings I think. For me it's worse on High. Also I think in the IL-2 compared to other planes.

Never knew about moving camera around with these keys. Now I know!
SharpeXB Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 You've always been able to zoom in and out with the W and S keys in F2 view. Just like RoF. Press Num 5 and it returns to the default view.
vx111vx111swift Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Nothing occurs when I press F11 am i doing something wrong??

SharpeXB Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Ok now that I've got the option to turn SSAO on and off, I choose to leave it on. It does add the ambient shadows in the cockpit that look nice. I guess that's why we need choices... This is set on Ultra. That gauze effect is very minor and not worth losing the overall effectfor IMO
SharpeXB Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Here's some examples of HDR On and Off. All on Ultra with SSAO On

1PL-Husar-1Esk Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 How big do you find the SSAO/ HDR's respective impact on performance and frame rates? On high settings (all option max out, 1080p) HDR and SSAO - there is 2-3 fps difference, with ultra preset 6-8 fps difference. I like both turn on - i don't have any issue with SSAO nor HDR GPU Nvidia 690 CPU I5@4.Ghz
Zettman Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 S! Anyone tried to find the file that saves the bubble range and set it to a higher value than x4? Does it have any effects and how is the impact on the perfomence? Zettman

TWC_Ace Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 (edited) SSAO and HDR settings (set to OFF) makes bigger difference for users with older cards. I have GTX670 and noticed considerably smoother gameplay (didnt measure FPS) and less blurry like trees and environment when flying treetops. For guys with new cards it doesnt do much. They can have both settings set to ON. Edited July 8, 2015 by blackram_
Requiem Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 For me the problem with SSAO isn't apparent in screenshots. You see the smear effect when the game is in motion (needs a video to illustrate it), especially on the instrument panel. Very happy I can turn it off now! :-)
Urra Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 S! Anyone tried to find the file that saves the bubble range and set it to a higher value than x4? Does it have any effects and how is the impact on the perfomence? Zettman I see that graphics option listed in the startup file in the data folder. Settings are 0,1,2,3. Don't know if you can set it beyond the max. You also have option for Bloom in there.
Remontti Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 I have a Nvidia 970 and have turned SSAO and HDR off. I like this way better. SSAO was giving me too that smear effect that Requiem was talking about. Just glad I got rid off that.
Urra Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Bubble x4 - it is not enough for me, are you guys have same thoughts? I will have to check for this, haven't seen it yet.
SharpeXB Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 The smear effect, for me anyways, is very hard to discern in Ultra unless you deliberately look for it and I don't even know if it would appear on a video capture. It's that faint. Would be nice if that could be removed though but keep the SSAO. That functions as per it's name and adds the indirect shading which is really noticable in a cockpit.
Reflected Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Did some comparison: SSAO: Off, HDR: Off HDR: Off SSAO: On HDR: On, SSAO: Off: HDR: On SSAO: On Now for external view: SSAO: Off, HDR: Off SSAO: On, HDR: Off SSAO: Off, HDR: On SSAO: On, HDR: On

LastRightsXIII Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 (edited) The bubble was the first thing I looked at after the update. Great update by the way. I had such high hope for it to expand out a little further but I see no change. Don't like it. Edited July 8, 2015 by LastRightsXIII
TG-55Panthercules Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 The bubble was the first thing I looked at after the update. Great update by the way. I had such high hope for it to expand out a little further but I see no change. Don't like it. This Visually this looks as bad or worse as it did before - I didn't spend much time trying to compare the differences between HDR/SSAO on versus off, because I noticed that the "bubble of blur" is still in place and I didn't see much point wasting my time checking out the other aspects if I'm not going to be flying it anyway. And now I see that there's no chance of playing with the terrain.ini file to try to tweak it further. I appreciate them giving it a shot and letting us turn HDR and SSAO off, but it looks like I'll have to wait at least one more patch before getting back in the air in BoS. 1

Urra Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 (edited) I'm getting 80-90fps sitting on the ground in qmb with,SSAO off, changed to higher landlod x factor(changed startup file to setting of "5" just incase this helps)-as it doesn't hurt, and ultra on. It seems that a lot has been optimized to give the best performance in the background. I'm sure it's worse slighly lower in MP, but its a marked improvement if the lod bubble is not something that makes or breaks the sim for you. I don't see the straight lines noted above, but definately the tree lines as before. Edited July 9, 2015 by roaming_gnome
Maico Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Hi all, Im running an Intel 950 i7Bloomfield and a Evga580GTX 1.5 GB. I know, the museum wants it, right? I am hoping to have time to put my new rig together soon. I am gathering from these posts that turning SSSAO and HDR off will give better fps... What else can I do to improve fps. Mind you, I just reloaded my Win7 so my machine is running like a champ. Im trying AA at 2x and AF at 4x The ground and textures look awesome but I want a little more fps. It can be more smooth.. I am hoping Mastiff out of the kindness of his heart, will share his Nvidia settings. ;-) Good day all
