I-16 - first thoughts

Overall, I love it. Such fun.

Prone to a sudden roll if you turn too tight. Easy to end up inverted looking up at the trees just yards above you. Instant death.

Prone to overcooling, the engine will drop to 25 degrees very quickly if you dive with the cowl flaps wide open.

You definitely need the cannon.

Fuel gauge not working yet.

Can't wait for some great skins.

Right ... better go to work. Just want to fly though.

Oh, great sound too!

Overall, I love it. Such fun.

I have only had one flight.

Start up and take off were not too difficult.

Roll rate is excellent.

I took on a vehicle column with those 20mm canons, killed 2 trucks but was shot down by one of them.

So I have not tried landing her yet.

I too cannot wait for some skins.

Back in for another go. :)

Its a delight to fly.. Turns great, lands easily, just going to try it out with the Cannons and will report back :P

How did they implement the manual gear operation?

How did they implement the manual gear operation?

It's just the same key as normal for landing gear, but it takes longer to raise/lower them as if they were manually operated.

Instant death.

Speaking of which: how does it look tumbling towards the ground enveloped in a fireball?

Downloading now with the greatest anticipation.

I could not have got into this EA if not for the great kindness of friend Finkeren.  About a week ago, without warning and out of a clear blue sky he descended like a lightning bolt.  With perfect deflection he fired a single burst and scored a direct hit with a shiny gold BoM bar.  It burst within the cockpit and spead happiness everywhere.  A tiny piece of of it flew on and lodged underneath my BoS Premium Account where it can still be seen to this day...

True story.  :salute:

I love the fact that the rudders are acting like the German rudders, you just push the pedals.

It's quite easy to taxi.

After landing the Lagg, for instance, taught me to stamp on the rudder like crazy to avoid ground loops, but this little bugger needs gentle rudder movements, as it reacts very directly.

I have seen no tracers, but I have not fired that many rounds.

It flies very natural (I lack a better word but it's doing exactly what you want it to do) although I have not yet been to the extremes of the envelop.

All in all, great plane.

Gotta love the view from that cockpit :)

Too bad about the music though. Would've loved to hear the sound of that Shvetsov.

Rate is pure joy.

Which rate? Turn rate, roll rate or rate of fire? ;)

Yeah I know it was a typo.

What is the top speed of the Rata? How about the climb rate?

Faster than a G-2 at alt! Slower than an A-3 in a dive!

(Just kidding...)

Can't say how it is in the sim, but it should be doing no more than 450 on the deck. Climb rate should be decent though. Propably slightly below the Yak-1.

Finkeren, the rate at which you type. :)

Fuel gauge not working yet.

The fuel gauge works. The pilot will periodically pull the knob to the right of the gauge in order to read the fuel level.

Oh, just some other notes for you guys, from testing:

  • Engine Boost works up to about 1500 meters and can be run for about 5 minutes continuous.
  • Adjust supercharger at about 3000 meters.
  • Engine can be run at max rpm and manifold pressure for about 5-7 minutes before it conks out.
  • Engine can be run continuously at max manifold pressure and 2200 rpm
  • Watch the mechanical landing gear indicator to see how far up/down your gear is. :)

What about skins? I do have one of it. Is this correct?

Thank you

Yes

Thanks LukeFF for the quick answer.

Hopefully we will see some great usermade skins.

PS: I like my little rat :)

Fantastic job.

Yeah, remember to close the side hatches as you take off if you started on the taxi track.

You will lose 'm like the German canapy.

I took off and circled around. When I switched to externals I thought, Huh. They've forgot to model the side doors. About a minute later I recalled that odd ripping sound as I was raising the gear...

Oh is that what that breaking sound was?

Also there is a graphical glitch on wheels or maybe it's that door that doesn't fall off

My new favourite plane. Very hard to shoot anything down without the cannons but its a beauty to fly.

Did it not have trim controls?

The cockpit view needs some adjusting in order to be able to see the instruments. I haven't tried that yet though. It seems similar to the 190 in that regard.

Hi guys. Can someone please help me, i know it is a stupid question....but how do i lower my seat....cant see inside the cockpit the instruments. Or is it done through camera controls?

IIRC only fixed trim tabs.

If you have TIR you can duck down to see them

Ala13_Kike

or go up in your seat with cockpit in screen, and center the trackir position (in freetrack we can center the head position all time that we need), your position will go down on cockpit, but in next re-center...bb to this solution

LukeFF - Thanks for the tip about the fuel gauge.

SharpeXB and everyone else - Keypad . (KP. or KPDel) gives you an instrument view, same as with the other places. Or press Home to sit back and you can see some.

Oh, about the machine guns (and cannons): the wing-mounted MGs and the cannons are fired with the Fire Weapon Group 2 command (formerly known as the Fire only cannons command).
