If I open up the land_tex_lods in startup.cfg it is set to 3 not 4 as in the game, is it possible this is the problem we're experiencing with the blurry ground?

It sets to 0,1,2,3 (four settings), i believe.

I agree: it is exactly what we have always had in RoF as well,

I have never experienced this sort of thing with RoF so I'm not sure what you're referring to (or maybe it was once like that and it's been overcome by tweaking our video settings for so long that I've forgotten about it?  I don't think I've ever had anything like that in RoF though, as I think I would have remembered something that bad).

You could delete content of the Update folder. Then open launcher and it will update the game from beginning.

Zami, a zillion thanks! I saw your reply at about the same time I did the response from Support, both suggesting the same thing. Needless to say I ran licketty split to the system and shaazam - I'm back up and running. You're the man, Zami. Cheers and see you up there!

Member Posts: 354 Posted Today, 22:39 Hmmm. I used to tweak the .ini file but went back to the default some time ago. I was curious as to the issue Custard had, so checked it out for myself. From what I can see there is a new issue outside of the bubble and that is whole chunks appear fuzzy, almost regardless of the bubble. I haven't got much pc time to really look into it, but from the point of view of someone who tolerated a default .ini file, this new setup, even with highest settings enabled is worse than it was. A real shame, please could the devs check this out; it's taken the shine off what was a brilliant update.

I hope so Chief, some more screen caps. Before and after. The ones after where taken tonight online.

I finally had time to set up a quick mission that was just before sunset. Landed my plane on the field and recorded the sunset (I got bored at a few minutes). But on play back at 16x I have to say the effect is very impressive. I watch at the sun disappear. That looked very realistic. Then I watched the sky darken in the east. One by one, stars started popping out. Again very realistic. The moon came out, a full moon at that. I hadn't noticed it before but the full moon cast shadows after it got high enough in the night sky. The stars tracked across the sky as the virtual earth rotated.

I'm sure a lot of this has been in the game since the beginning, I just never took the time to watch it like that. Very impressive and well worth watching, even at 16x.

I was referring to the three things that seem to happen to the visuals in RoF and relating them to BoS:

1)The tiles shifting from high detail to lower detail versions with distance - zoom dependent. The lower detailed versions look blurry, especially the winter map tiles, for some reason.

2)Planes, buildings, guns etc becoming being rendered in a circle of 7km - not zoom dependent. Although you might need zoom to see them.

3)Individual trees along roads etc, which are rendered in a circle of xkm - zoom dependent and slider dependent - which sometimes creates an obvious circle/ pop-up effect. More noticeable on the Channel map, just because it has more of these free standing trees I suppose.

AFAIK BoS is using the same basic mechanisms, except possibly that the forests in RoF seem to become trees according to the tile placement as per 1 above, whereas in BoS trees in the forest appear to have a more detailed model that is treated as per 3 above, hence a more obvious circle effect.

Just trying to understand what is going on.... but whatever, the solution is obvious.  Put all of these on sliders or an ini (except maybe the planes/object distance if you want MP consistency), and let us decide what performance/cosmetic trade-off we want.

Edit to above - actually RoF uses same method of popping up trees on forest textures as BoS - just checked - as in 3 above . Is much less obtrusive in RoF even on the winter map, which I suspect is simply because there is no snow  background. The summer BoS/BoM maps may look better on current settings.

Okay, lets hope so, right now we are flying towards big splotches in the distance, I keep thinking they are some sort of tar pits in the distance, as they don't resemble the terrain that will get generated in the end.

This please, because it's not about having some sort of advantage in MP.  It's just the fact that the terrain just looks plain ugly now compared to what we had before, even if you didn't tweak the ini file.

I seriously hope this is not an intentional part of the update and is just a "tar pit - splotch" bug of some sort because the terrain in it's current state is now pretty much wrecked.

With terrain.ini the Landscape looked pretty sharp and detailed. Thats was a pretty impressive experience how BoS looks. Now comes BoM and remove the great working terrain.ini that allowed 8k Landscape Rendering.  Its the same like with Mods On Mode, Custom Graphic Settings........ This game feels to get restricted more and more. Tweaking the terrain.ini was Modding thats why it is gone.

Their Texture Draw Distance work different how terrain.ini worked. Terrain.ini allowed more, much more you had the full control over the Near,Middle,Far Draw Distance. Texture Draw Distance is more limited and restricted. It doesn't allow like terrain.ini to extend the Middle & Far Draw Distance. Thats why we see pop-ups and the blurry grounds.

No answer is an answer if thats a bug or a game improvement? We choose what it is...........

Thank you devs, especially for the SSAO and HDR options.  Runs silky smooth for me now

I really  hope it's a bug, it is also affected by certain zoom settings. prior to the latest update and even if you where using vanilla setting you never had the terrain (blur) effects that you see in the cap below.

I'm also having those huge blurry blocks now. Before the patch I didnt have that problem, I dont know if its related, but I also had tweaked the .ini files, too bad its not there anymore.  :(

On the (not so) bright side, I find it easier to spot enemies with those blurry blocks when I'm flying very very high.

I think now, what I fear more the silence around this issue or this bug. The silence where I get the feeling thats not a bug. :scare:

Maybe a clean install is needed that this patch work correct? I try to made a clean install to see if that helps?

Indeed very helpful to spot the enemy planes on Expert Servers. Indeed thats the (not so) bright side.  I feel mega sorry for all human players that fly below me

No I already did this. Clearly a bug, I can't imagine this is what they intended, lets give them a chance to read the forums :)

Devs, Thanks for the updates, 1.1.01 is greatly appreciated, :salute:

But I'm waiting for 5760x1080 support (Hud/Map/FOV/etc).  :help:

Sorry, just can justify the $$$ for a 'modern' flight sim the can't correctly support more than one monitor.  :dash:

No BOM for me until WideScreen support is updated/implemented.  :bye:

Can someone please let me know if my version is working. I see where the latest update is registered to me...but I cannot see where I can use the !-16. I am a "founder" of BOS and I bought BOM where it was first announced...my profile indicates that I have been credited for the purchase of BOM...but it seems like the updates do not give me the access to stuff that is said to be available to early purchasers of BOM.

So...is there a switch or some sort of key that has not been made that would give my account the credit it should have for my early involvement in this game?

Thanks.

Have you activated your license key in your profile here at the site? You need to do so, even if you bought through Steam.

Is there a bug report for this (tarpit texture issue), I couldn't see one in the bug forum? If the devs need it logging there and any system spec info then please just ask. I just had a quick duel against the rata and I was being distracted by the tar pits!
I popped something in the graphics bugs section of the forum and I have to agree the tar pits/ blurry/fuzzy effect distract me from everything, it looks terrible :(

Excluding the occasional blocky texture bug, the game looks still awesome to me. I was just dogfighting over Stalingrad at dusk and it just can`t get more beautiful than that.

The map looks better than ever, I think they have done something to the rivers and lakes. I can seperate them very easy now. Overall map is masterpiece considering it is winter map which is always more dull than green maps. Great job!

Thanks, Finkeren...I went to my profile section and re-entered the activation keys, even though the notation said the key was already activated...the message came back that my keys were already activated...kind of puzzling to me.

When I start the game, there are three activation keys that pop up in a block. One is just "Battle of Stalingrad", the other two show specific aircraft types...am I supposed to do something with those each time? The game plays fine whichever key I highlight.

Pls go easy on the "fix this or 1) I will not buy the sim, 2) it is terrible, 3) unplayable" kind of critique... It gets very tiresome and it is rather uncool attempts at blackmailing. Try to state your grievances without going so exaggeratedly over the top, you will come across as more reasonable.

Zami my friend, I can't agree with you on this one because in my view its a massive backwards step. Taking nothing away from the work being put in by the Dev's something appears to have gone very wrong.

Compare the two screen caps below the video, before and after it's like looking at a completely different sim.

I think =LD=Penshoon's video gives a clearer indication of what is happening.

2) it is terrible

Hi Freycinet, I don't know if any of what you said was aimed in my direction? I am an ardent fan of this sim  and I take nothing away from the work that the Dev's have put in. Unfortunately the latest update seems to have had a very adverse effect on the terrain and in my view it looks "terrible."  The evidence is fairly plain to see and I'm not trying to blackmail anyone or be exaggeratedly over the top. Hopefully I'm coming across fairly reasonable too. If it wasn't aimed at me you have my apology.

Once you have activated your game and checked that it does not need to update any more, start BoS as normal, do not need to worry about those keys again. Go to Quick Mission, and click on the my plane tab to select your plane type. You should get a new menu with the old BoS planes on the left, BoM (just I16 for now) on the right.

This fooled me at first as well....

I know that, that`s why I said "Excluding the occasional blocky texture bug". ;)

And it is not so clearly noticeable on my system, I don`t know why. So it doesn`t bother me so much as many of you. I had look for it on purpose like we discussed earlier in this thread but it`s there, I agree on that of course.

I understand it can be real pain for many of you, hope it get`s fixed soon! :)

nothging aimed at you or anybody in particular, but at the general tone of "the sky is falling! the sky is falling!"...

- They changed a lot in the sim, there's a bug, they'll fix it, no big deal. Fly and have fun. Sims have come a long way: that blurry terrain would have been par for the course just a few years ago...

This comes to mind:

So I´m finally back home from a vacation. And while I watched all the Stuff regarding the last update and the I-16 with my mobile device, it became very hard to keep myself patience... ;)

Well, the issue with the rendering distance...meeeh. Not so nice.

I would also like to get back the possibility to tweak the ini files....

But all in all it´s a damn cool update and a great start to the BoM EA!!!!

Really love this nimble rat though I never liked and flew it in the old IL-2 days.

But the I-16 is a joy to fly!!!

I noticed, that the contrast of the river banks and lake shores has been increaesed. This adds much to the overall ground quality.

And no words need to be said about the improved sunsets....just outstanding!!! :o:

Yeah, I like how rivers and lakes can now be seen so clearly. And the sunset is really something
