So boys, update 1.101 has been announced for tomorrow, hype train is up, with its first stop at the I-16 hangar. Question is will the I-16 actually be available to BOM pre-orders tomorrow or will it still be limited to testers?

I certainly hope so =D

That's quicker than I anticipated.

Good news!!

On a plane instead of simulating one. @!#$%

At least the first hotfix will probably have dropped by the time I get back to BOS.

I'm not really going to be on either until at least Saturday :/

TWB server had better allow the I-16! Aborted needs to get on it!

And guess who's on vacation away from my computer for the rest of the week :(

Good luck with BoM EA fellas...

not trolling, just curious: why are hopes so high on this littel new plane? I wonder since I've never loved it that much.

It has nothing to do with hopes. Heck I litterally can't wait for the MiG-3 which is likely going to be at best a troublesome fighter.

It's just that we're getting a new plane and a damn iconic one at that.

Plus: I expect the Rata to be nothing but pure, unadulterated fun to fly, with its notoriously unstable behavior and unmatched maneuverability.

Kind of excited about the Rata but I'll be more excited when we get an E7 and the early historical fights can take place. Although, apparently, it was in service til '43. Still don't fancy an F4/I16 duel all that much.

The best thing an I-16 pilot can do is propably working his ass off to only give the German pilots imposible shots and take pot shots with his 4 pea shooters when the inevitable overshoot occurs, but even that sounds like a ton of fun :)

Well I'd hate to burst your buble, but Aborted is on a short hiatus until he gets some replacement parts for his pc. His cooler took a dump and may have done some bad things to the rest of his rig.

excuse me, unstable? the plane was never unstable read the pilots notes from test pilots. all wind tunnel test where dispelled. test pilots state plane flew true and no need to correct with inputs from a spin plane corrected it self. and no characteristic's of a flat spin.

as stated from wind tunnel test.

Operational history[edit]

Initial service experience: revealed that the ShKAS machine guns had a tendency to jam. This was the result of the guns being installed in the wings upside-down to facilitate the fit. The problem was addressed in later modifications. Evaluations from pilots confirmed the experience with prototypes. Controls were light and very sensitive, abrupt maneuvers resulted in spins, and spin behavior was excellent. An aileron roll could be performed in under 1.5 seconds (roll rate over 240 degrees/second). The machine guns were fired via a cable and the required effort, coupled with sensitive controls, made precision aiming difficult. The rear weight bias made the I-16 easy to handle on unprepared airfields because the aircraft was rather unlikely to flip over the nose even if the front wheels dug in.

The I-16 was a difficult fighter to fly. The pilots had poor visibility[5] and the canopy tended to become fouled with engine oil and the moving portion was prone to slamming shut during hard maneuvers which caused many pilots to fix it in the open position. The front section of the fuselage, with the engine, was too close to the centre of gravity, and the pilot's cockpit too far to the rear. The Polikarpov had insufficient longitudinal stability and it was impossible to fly the aircraft "hand off".

This was overcome by the time they updated to type24, new canopy's, a lot of field work done by ground mechanics and pilots. To make the plane better.

True, but that's going to come as a hell of a shock to a lot of 109F4 jocks right now. Currently they can fly fairly reckless as they can out run, out climb and out turn everything else in the game. Hence turn fighting 109's are very much the norm as they get away with it more often than not, even against Yak-1's. The I-16 should give those particular 109 drivers some well deserved pain.

Cmon dude. Dont be silly. outrun and outclimb fine - to a far less than historical accurate margin. But outturn? Really? You cant be serious on this one.

correct even though the planes has a good turn and roll rate, with the experience of testing the i16 can not out turn the 109.

I can however out roll it and maneuver evade it. I can not out run it. or out dive it.

Even though the type 24 was heavier (and quite tail heavy) it still outturned the Bf 109 F by a small margin (1 - 2 sec advantage on a 360 turn)

However, it's in a rolling scissors that the I-16 will absolutely tie the 109 in knots. A roll rate of some 230 deg/sec is not to be trifled with.

Me too Hooves, answering a call from my daughter to fly 1400ks to look after my grand daughters for the last week of the school holidays. Methinks its a bloody conspiracy as about 70% of updates have occured when I have been interstate or overseas.

Well that's a shame :( I've still yet to pre-order BOM anyway.

109 vs. I-16 fights will boil down to what good pilots try to do in every dogfight - maximizing your plane's strengths while exploiting the enemy's weaknesses. For 109s, that means absolutely staying away from turn fights, keeping one's speed up, and maintaining the altitude advantage. In other words, not all that different than other matchups, like P-40s vs. Ki-43s or Ki-27s.

I'm assuming that came from the RoF hangar at some point. When did that happen? Any other easter eggs like that?

It's our first taste of new aircraft since BOS was released. It could be a PO-2 and we'd still all be excited.

It's always been there. Nothing unusual about it.

Most of the changes I'm interested in are rather a restoration than an update but I'm glad they will be implemented (once again). Hopefully it also includes some more FM fixes than announced in DD101.

~S~ Everyone,

Relax, maybe, the new campaign involves ferrying around a young Soviet, named the Slavic equivalent of "Florence", in our I-16s, as we whiz by tankers (see also : Spectator View) on the ground. Huh, huh?

Long May You Fly,
