Why do we have to wait for something that is Finished (Sorry if this sounds bad I am just confused) ?

Simple: Even if the maps as such are ready (and BTW it's still only the summer map, we haven't seen the autumn one yet) it takes a lot of work to implement into the official version of BoS and test it thoroughly.

Right now the devs are hard at work getting the major update 1.101 ready that'll launch BoM early access. Understandably they want to keep focus on that.

Really nice to see how many attention BoS still receive, this is truly a sign of quality!

I understand that the devs don't have the time and resources to create a traditionel static campaign. But what about giving us mission builders the possibility to create our own campaigns?

This is the homerun the 1CGS IL-2 series needs!  Put the community to work on what would be an understandably impossible task for 1CGS (creating static campaigns).  This has always been the strong suit of the IL-2 community.  This is what most single players are waiting for!

S! Thank you for listening to players', especially those like me who exclusively fly offline, concerns about the quality of the BoS campaign system.  The campaign enhancements you described sound like excellent improvements.  You were right to attend to the basics of the sim first and then tackle issues like the campaign system.  Keep up the great work.  Can't wait to try the new campaign system when you make it available.  :)

Ah sorry, I read "finished" as "finished"...    :salute:

Well that's an interesting and unexpected announcement. I look forward to trying this new experimental campaign.

I remember talking to Starshoy (yes, back in 2002-2003) about mixing hand-crafted missions into a campaign that mainly consisted of dynamically generated missions!

It is a very good idea, yes. I recall back in the days of playing Aces of the Pacific that historical missions would be interspersed among the randomly generated career missions.

Nice update, especially looking forward to the upgraded campaign missions and to see what they bring to the game, good to hear you are listening to the community, that's what it's all about at the end of the day.

Thanks!

This missions will have long briefings telling the unique stories and special hand-made mission scenarios only. This is an experiment.

There is a lot to admire in the idea and the technology of the 'procedurally generated' (more or less) campaign missions. Looking at them in the ME they're an amazing achievement.

I really hope the experiments continue. If these can be somehow (PWCG...) combined with more "story-telling" and more historical grounding, it might just be seriously honestly really good for SP players!

Great news that you are giving the SP campaign a bit of love.  It was one of the valid criticism's of the game - made it feel a bit soulless.

Looking forward to our Spring!

Good luck with it!

Thanks for making the effort to keep us all informed and in the loop.  Much appreciated.

All good stuff, but please do away with the bloody pilot levels, they do not belong in a flight sim with this much potential. They are the reason I ceased playing in campaign mode a looooong time ago.

Otherwise great to see the game progressing continually.

Amen!

I noted that there was a mention of the fake awards in the OP, so apparently there is some recognition among the devs that this sort of thing has alienated a significant portion of their customer base.  If those silly things (and things like pilot levels) are already in the code and actually appeal to part of the BoS player base, then by all means keep them in the campaign.  But if you can't get rid of them entirely then please consider giving us an option to suppress/turn off any visible evidence of them so we don't have to see or know anything about them if we want to play a more realistic/historical approach to the campaign.

Opening wallet ... now!  Seriously, great update, great communication, great work, and the screenshots, great Scott!

Thank you BlackSix, for taking the time to share this information.

The tanks/tracks and terrain look really good! Happy to see this effort on the ground also, (especially for the ground sorties)

Telling the story with more art and emotion, excellent news and looking forward to this also.

General Question re: Steam

Now that BOS is available on steam, will there be any work involving Opengl for the Linux community and Steam?

This is excellent news! It's nice to see the team experimenting with new ideas.

I am pleased that the team is experimenting with improving the SP campaign - but a little confused as to what the actual proposals is.

You say "As a result, with this new campaign you're getting 6 career missions." I think this means that there are 6 of the special, detailed missions in each campaign (or each chapter) that are somehow mixed in with the normal generic missions. Is that right? If so, that could be fun and an interesting change of pace.

It also sounds as though you are set on keeping the horrible one-time-only pilot leveling system. Please put this on the list of things to make player controllable. It really should not matter to the developers or anyone else what level of difficulty SP pilots prefer.

The more the campaign parameters can be controlled through a simple ini file the better.

Honestly, I'm not quite satisfied with the tree textures. Not a huge issue, but I hope that's something that will get polished eventually. I can see three problems:

  1. No alpha blending, alpha testing is used instead, it seems. See  for instance http://blogs.msdn.com/b/shawnhar/archive/2011/05/06/antialiasing-alpha-cutouts.aspx to see what I mean. The shots from the game look like the second picture on that page, it would be nice if it looked like the top picture instead. But that might not be feasible. It's a pity, because the sharp transition from leaf to background was also visible from the sky on forests.
  2. Lack of sharpness in tree textures. Those isolated trees in the open on the tank picture look blurry in a way that makes them stand out in a bad way.
  3. Grid effect/bug. That's an old one, and it's still there

I also think the render distance of foliage isn't handled very well. Lots of it near the camera, and then none at all and low-res ground texture further away. I don't care that much, though, that's acceptable in a flight sim IMHO.

We got a lot of such questions on Steam forum, but we've not such plans and opportunities now...

You'll get 6 single missions for the new BoS campaign in all, two missions for each chapter.

Nice work and looking forward to it, although I have a question to the actual version of BoS:

When is going to be fixed the "NaN"s and freezing of the speed etc. after starting a MP game before the "MAX" appears? This bug is a very very annoying thing - for this reason, I often stop playing the game and I guess I´m not the only one.

I know, you wrote in some previous dev blogs that this bug was fixed, but it is still there...

thx in advance for your answer.

Thanks for the update again Devs. Those pics had me drooling, especially the I-16.

Will there be no randomly generated missions anymore for career? I'm glad to hear that there will be those six missions, but will this take away the rest, or just be 6 missions to fly before generating missions?

The bug is fixed in the update. The update, however, has no been released yet but will be soon. It is still in the testing phase. Patience.

Six static missions plus what you have now.

Very happy to see all this work going into BOS along with BOM.  I hope they release a new "IL2 Battle of ?" every year for the next decade, I'll buy them all.
