BG09 Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 Hi everibody, dear devs, please watch this guncam video: http://youtu.be/W_LkZi5r6dw?t=3m42s Start the video, it will begin at 3m:42s - (here the clip is with the ORIGINAL BATTLE SOUND!) Maximize the sound volume Watch till 5m:20s. Please note THE HUGE EXPLOSION SOUND from the hitting exploding 30 mm shels in to the fuselage of B-24 and B-17!!! The explosion sound is LOUDER than the guns and the mashine guns combined TOGETHER! This have to be properly done in Il92 BOS. Sound of the exploding gun shels while hitting the enemy aircraft!!! Magnificent!!! ~Regards! 1
=LD=Hethwill Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 I am positive that the gun cams did not have audio capture hardware installed. Sounds for propaganda movies was post production.
BG09 Posted October 21, 2013 Author Posted October 21, 2013 I do believe that explosion of 30 mm gun shel must be very loud, because he is doing hole in to the fuselage big near 2 sqare meters...
Finkeren Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 These videos were recorded with no sound, as were all gun camera footage from the war. It's pretty damn obvious too. Notice that exactly the same bit of sound is used for every impact with no change in volume as the attacking plane draws closer and apparently with no regard of the speed of sound either. A 30mm explosive shell hitting an aircraft would definately be heard by the crew on board the aircraft and propably audible as well to the nearest planes in formation, but to an attacking aircraft posibly over a hundred meters away? I kinda doubt it. There is no ground to reflect and amplify the sound and there are several other sources of noise that are so much closer all around the pilot, that I just can't see the sound of 85 grams of penthrite going off 100m away overpowering those sounds.
IIN8II Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 Yes, the sound was added later for dramatic effect. To my knowledge gun cam's did not record any sound.
Wind Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 16mm WW2 gun cameras did not do sound. Cameras that do sound to 16mm film, optical or magnetic, are a rare and late invention. Add to that, that the benefit of having sound in gun cams would have been absolutely zero. Or actually it would have been detrimental, as the planes would have had to carry sound recording equipement as well adding weight.... And if you sit down an think about the soundscape, you could realize how challenging it would to record good quality of audio...with WW2 era tech... - Dozens, if not hundreds of high horsepower engines in the vicinity, including the planes own engine. - Dozens, if not hundreds of machine guns & cannons firing in the vicinity, including the planes own guns. - Sound propagation charasteristics change at high altitude due several reasons... - etc..
HeavyCavalrySgt Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 Even if gun cams did have microphones, please consider that we are theoretically hearing explosions, but we don't hear the engines of the bombers, or the noise of the airflow over the airframe. We are also hearing the explosions in time with seeing the explosion with no delay. It doesn't seem all that plausible, does it? The cannon rounds were probably not quiet, but they had less explosive in them than a 40mm grenade, and those aren't particularly loud unless you are dangerously close.
Finkeren Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 Also keep in mind that the German 30mm Minengeschoss used in the Mk 103 only had half the amount of explosive charge of a standard German M24 "potato masher" hand grenade. Even though the use of PETN, which has higher brisance than the TNT in the M24, might produce a somewhat louder detonation, I simply can't see how you'd be able to hear that detonation in open air at 100m distance through a closed cockpit and helmet with earphones while also having the sound of the engine right in front of you and posibly the sound of autocannon firing ringing in your ears.
II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 It is a particularly nice video.........minus the (re)overdubbing of voice and effects. Probably worth more to the devs for visuals. Anyone have the English, un(re)dubbed, version?

FuriousMeow Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 I don't know Furbs, there are some pretty good ones. This might actually only be a runner-up. 1
Karost Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 (edited) German 30mm Minengeschoss used in the Mk 103 only do you forget MK 108 Cartridge: 30x90RB http://wiki.warthunder.com/index.php?title=30mm_Rheinmetall_Borsig_M108 http://www.quarry.nildram.co.uk/30mm%20cannon.htm there also has a good info. for kinetic vs chemical http://www.quarry.nildram.co.uk/WW2guneffect.htm Edited October 21, 2013 by karost

I wasn't implying that Minengeschoss was only used on the 103.
VBF-12_Stick-95 Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 Many flesh and blood servicemen dying in that video. S! to them.
