Hello folks,

so it is this time of the year again. AMD and NVIDIA have brought out their top single GPUs and I guess except for some Dual GPU cards we won't see anything more until next year.

Since my last attempt to switch from 2 GTX780 to two R9 290X failed because I had problems settingup three monitors in crossfire, I ended up buying a 3rd GTX780 on ebay after returning the two R9 290X. Which was a fun experience, esspecially the coolingsolution I had to come up to dissipate all the heat. But since I no longer play on 3 monitors after switching to my 21:9 34" LG Monitor, I may give it another try.

Plus after playing ArmA 3 with only one GTX780 (forget to enable SLI after driver update) I found that the additional lag and frametimeproblems with 2-way and 3-way SLI is spoiling the fun compared to a single GPU. One GTX780 was more than enough to handle ArmA 3 at 3440x1440 with acceptable FPS. The Game is similar CPU bound as IL2 BoS and my single GTX780 wasn't even running at 100% all the time because of it being CPU bound.

This brought me to the conlusion, that a single new Single GPU without the frametime, incresed input lag and driver support issues may be worth to consider. I'm looking for an powerful single GPU upgrade without crippling my gameexperience in CPU bound games like IL2 BoS or Arma 3 that already run fine on a single GTX780.

Since I dropped multimonitoring and Crossifre/SLI, AMD has become an option again. But how do current DX9 titles run on the new AMD cards? Does anyone already have a R9 Fury X and can share his experiences with IL2 BoS?

Im also happy if someone who has switched from a dual GPU solution to a single more powerful card could share his experiences. Like going from two GTX670 to a Titan X/GTX980 or something like that.

Greetings,

Zettman

Check out this thread for reports on the TitanX although now the GTX 980ti is about as good but much less cost. BoS as a DX9 game doesn't run very well on AMD from what I understand due to lack of DX9 driver support. I'm running 2-way SLI and have no trouble at all with BoS. If I had your monitor and a budget I'd try a 980ti and if one didn't do enough, get a second. If money is less of a concern just go with the Titan but the performance difference I can read about for both cards is nearly the same so perhaps the cost is hard to justify.

As far as your question about switching from 2 cards to one. I was running 2x GTX 980 and when I got a UHD monitor I tried a single TitanX. I think most tests have a single TitanX = 2x 980s in performance. I didn't find that a single Titan handled games on Ultra UHD very well so I went back to SLI. Other than better performance I don't see any difference running one or two GPUs

BoS is bound by the CPU in instances where there are a lot of objects, to the point where SLI doesn't help. I think I posted some tests in that thread. In scenarios with less objects the FPS boosts way up. But there is a benefit to dual cards.
