I don't think that was a typo. I think he really means A5M 'Claudes' for a Khalkin Gol scenario (Not sure if the IJN ever had planes at Khalkin, I would expect IJA Ki-27s)

You are correct the Ki-27 would be accurate for a Khalkhin Gol scenario. If I remember correctly in 37 or 38 there were some major air battles fought between the CAF (with soviet volunteers) and IJN which pitted the I-16 against the A5m. Just food for thought

Interesting. Would they have been using the Type 5 in those cases? I know the CAF had a bunch of Russian made hardware but they never did get the top of the line stuff did they?

Yes that probably would be true. I am not sure which variants were provided to the CAF. As the for the A6M vs I-16 check out the 4th paragraph here. Assuming it's factual it looks like 12 Zeros shot down a formation of 27 i-15 and i-16s with no losses!
