vortex and smoke

As you know the game engine has turbulence implemented (I still remember an interesting video during the development of ROF where smoke was represented by bubbles and was affected by an aeroplane passing by), and since we're going to have wingtip vortexes, I wonder whether it would be possible to implement visible vortexes when aeroplanes pass through/near clouds or smoke (the smoke pouring from planes should also follow the same behaviour).

To model this behavior properly would require some fairly complex physics calculations. I imagine that it would significantly impact game performance simply for a small graphical effect (which would not be noticeable 95% of the time). I don't think we have any hope of seeing this because while very cool is simply not efficient in terms of development time to gameplay benefit. Perhaps in the 10-20 years this sort of thing will be efficient from a design and computational power perspective.

well that's what I thought, but we also know that the potential is there, since there are videos that show how wind and air streams affect particles in the game. It might be a bit of a wizardry thing to do, and surely an interesting challenge for the developers! :)

Imagine how much it would add to the realism though!!

I also remember seeing that ROF video clip and was very impressed, would be great to see it updated for BOS also a good showcase for the complexity of modelling.

What you propose above would indeed be great for immersion, let alone Vids/screenshots   :)  alas, as has been said, is probably something for the next generation...unless a very recourse-light solution could be found
