carve_gybe1 Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 Hi there I am a 40+ year old with some weird affliction for flying. I think I should have been a pilot, but I went into finance... the problem is that I do all my flying during daydreaming. I spent some time on flight sims a decade or two ago. I even bought TrackIR back then which I still have! But computer gaming gave way to real life. Recently I had a mild version of a midlife crisis and got me a gaming laptop...and the obvious game to come with that was IL-2 BOS.... I am pretty bad at air combat, but I am a purist. I don't want to fly in "normal". I also want to fly something like the Lagg-3...I like a challenge. I realise my learning cureve is quite shallow compared to my online brethren. So I am looking for a server where I can fly the Lagg-3 in "expert", but where there is no presumption that I know how to fly with wingmen, make super acurate deflection shots or know how to do co-op missions. I don't want to fly offline with AI...I am a fairly sociable guy and like my friends and enemies to have a heartbeat. I hope the game developers can think of a way to get the likes of me to get more involved before I get discouraged. Would very much appreciate help in advance. Where can I fly? Thank you PS I can land the Lagg-3 without ground looping, so I must have some street cred! carve gybe
BraveSirRobin Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 I know you said that you don't want to fly against AI, but might be a good way to practice before you jump into the deep end of the pool.
II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 Based on your want to be off leash, fly anywhere you want. But if your description is accurate, be prepared for a lot of frustration and flaming wreckage. The expert servers are filled with experts, after all. I fly normal as a lone wulf or with a wingman. I rarely venture into the expert servers without wingmen and I'm considered an above average pilot. Not yet an expert.
Remontti Posted June 17, 2015 Posted June 17, 2015 I think you can enjoy the challenge in expert servers even if you fly a better plane. I usually fly on the Wings of Liberty and use Official Teamspeak. I pick the side with fewer players, but if you end up on same side, I'll fly with you.
carve_gybe1 Posted June 18, 2015 Author Posted June 18, 2015 Gents Thank you for your responses! To be clear, I do fly against AI occasionally. I just prefer flying amonst real people. I do accept that as a result I will get shot down a lot - but this is precisely why I wish there were an expert server that does offer some prospect of flying with real people on expert and surviving longer than 60 seconds after takeoff. I take the point on flying a better plane, but I think if I can get to a point where I can down an enemy plane 10% of the time I will feel sufficiently accomplished to move to better planes. Remontti, thanks for the offer to fly togrther on WoL. I will shout when I see you, but I do not get to game very often. By the way, what is Official Teamspeak? carve gybe

By the way, what is Official Teamspeak? carve gybe Especially on the Soviet side, lone-wolfing it will get you shot down. A lot. If that's okay with you then I say go for it, but the Luftwaffe crates are a little better-suited to hunting solo. There's a reason modern air doctrine refers to two aircraft as an "element" - that is, the smallest indivisible building block. You really need a wingman.
