label visible through plane body?

Recommended Posts

Hello.

I love IL-2 series and these days I stick with Battle of Stalingrad.

I have a difficulty to recognize enemy plane, so I use normal setting for enemy label.

But It is a little bit strange to me.

The plane label is visible through my plane body.

Here is my screenshot.

I think it's not natural.

What do you think about that?

P.S.

It's a different with "IL-2 Sturmovik Cliffs of Dover"

Here is my screenshot.

Here I can't see other plane's label through my plane body.

I think it's natural.

why different within 2 IL-2 series?

I don't see what's natural about planes having gigantic colored labels floating above them.

If we're gonna have Icons, we might as well have them visible at all times.

I would like them not to be visible through planes aswell.

@Finkeren this is probably a thread for people that play normal. Please leave any harcorce blahh at the door

I agree with OP and Aero, it would make normal mode a little more fun I think. Also take the minimap off but leave icons and reduce the draw distance or the distance at which color becomes visible. This would make it a little easier for Russians while not screwing with FM's. At least you could sneak up a little easier. This is all IMO however.

I only started really flying expert a few weeks ago when I got TrackIR. Before I absolutely depended on icons too, and I'm not hardcore by any means. I just found the comment about what looks 'natural' to be strange when talking about icons, which are by definition unnatural.

I understand why people would want the cockpit to hide icons, having them visible through your own plane kills immersion just a tad more than the icons themselves. Yet I prefer them this way, because it lets you use icons much more effectively in BnZ.

Even though yes icons are unrealistic they can still be presented in a more natural way

I think having the labels visible like that helps those without head tracking since otherwise objects can just vanish behind canopy frames and unlike the TrackIR equipped player they can just easily lean around to view. This game also has no "virtual cockpit" view so making the cockpit transparent to the icons helps with that as well.

I like them better "hidden."

For the record, though... Some of the best "expert" players I know only use(d) hatswitch for quite a long time.

You learn to fight towards your advantages. Tricky to dogfight with a hat switch? Bounce them!

I never liked that either.. I didn't like it in RoF.. I don't like it in DCS as well.. Icons as rendered in IL2 are the best IMO.. the only change I would make would be the option for arrows in the cockpit.. Not that I would ever use them mind you but I always thought that that option was one that was missing. I prefer to use limited icons that dissappear after .8 to 1.2k dependig on how my eyes are on a given day..

I always wondered how that works exactly because the icons are just graphics on your screen. Although they're obviously attached to in-game objects. How would the game know if they're hidden from your view? I've seen it work in those games but I can't imagine how it works. Then again I don't know how any of this works...

I would suspect that they are some sort of dynamic sprite that is "pinned" to the asset.

Sure but how does the game know you can't see it?

I think it's done with little elves and faries that live inside the microchip...
