As a sim pilot many of the que's that effect real pilots aren't present.

Should enhanced or additional effects be included in a sim such as BoS ?

Examples might be, enhanced creaking noises, louder wind noises during very fast dives, stronger bullet strike noises etc.

Purists, I'm sure, would say no, but if additional subtle effects can be included that enhance the psychological part of air combat then there should certainly be a case to argue, should there not ?

Some enhanced effects might make somebody jump out of their chair in fright when bullets hit close to the cockpit or additional wind effects (might keep the cockpit warm during periods of high tension) and creaking might add to the fear factor when taking the aircraft to it's limits.

I would see particularly useful enhanced stall warning buffeting, even admitting that some WWII era fighters had very little or no warning at all…

Subtlety, as Extreme_one mentioned is of the essence here. Sounds are probably the be way to introduce such warning, as a player will usually be able to pick out even small changes in the soundscape.

We need these effects in a flight sim because we have no seat of the pants feel or the airplane sitting at a desk starting at a screen.

As a general rule I'll say no, but I make a few exceptions in very specific cases, such as visible shaking of the cockpit to indicate buffeting.

I have come to suspect that some of that is how attuned the pilot is to it.  I was watching a video about a modern pilot doing transition training into a Mustang for example, and he said it gave two quick stall buffets and tried to spin.  I asked one of the local Mustang guys about it and he said no - it gives plenty of warning, but it is subtle.  I don't know what each one's power settings were or the airplane's configuration.  Maybe it is different doing a clean power on stall compared to a stall power off in the landing configuration.

In fairness, the gentleman I was speaking to had been flying -51s since the late 40s.  I doubt the airplane holds many surprises for him.  It does seem to keep him young and smiling, however.

Yes! I'm all for enhanced effects, if they're subtle enough to not appear overly hollywood, and done in a way so as to enhance the immersion and provide necessary feedback we would otherwise miss.

Hollywood effects? Is that where the Americans win the Battle of Stalingrad with Ben Affleck playing the insubordinate pilot who just happens to be the last pilot standing and takes on the might of the Luftwaffe, after which he manages to crash land his plane in Berlin which he's flown from Stalingrad with one wing and manages to kill Hitler with one punch?

Not unless Tom Cruise got there first.

You forgot the part where he also takes part in the Doolittle Raid, after having shown the British how to defeat Nazism in the Battle of Britain, and all this while struggling with the idea that his best friend was having carnal relations with the love of his life.

Then there is the waste of my own personal life entitled 'Red Tails'. What a bloody insult to those men that film is. But I'm getting serious now, so you blokes carry on. :)

Well if Hollywood special effects don't cut it, how about some great British docudrama style ala Breaking the Sound Barrier? All they had to do to accomplish it was "reversing the controls". If only Chuck Yeager had known.

As to sound effects, I'd love to hear the screaming dive sound that seems to be featured in most aviation movies. No idea how realistic it is but I think it sounds oh so cool.

That kind of goes contrary to the whole "realism" thing doesn't it.. ? In reality all you would hear or most of what you would hear wold be the drone of your engine .. If this is implemented I hope it isn't overdone like one of those mods in 46..... The creaking was so loud it was too much for me..

I recommend getting a Buttkicker Gamer 2 to add more immersion. Even just watching videos of flight sims is more engaging. I've almost been startled out of my chair from flak.

That is the conundrum, isn't it ?

In reality you might only hear certain things, but you sense or feel others.  In a sim you don't get the same feedback at all.

There are two, or more, aspects to it.  First there are enhanced environmental sounds, that while possibly unlikely to be heard in reality, because they might be drowned out by the engine, never the less help set the scene, or dress the set.  Secondly there are sounds that might provoke emotions such as fear or anxiety.  These might include such things as enhanced bullet strikes or loud creaking from the airframe when under stress, things that make the virtual pilot aware of the dangerous nature of the task he is undertaking.

In some respects you might consider it like incidental music, it paints a picture with sound.   Properly done, it should be there, but not there, unobvious but at the same time obvious if it isn't there.

The effects are so well done in ROF I am pretty confident the design team will get them right in BOS. I use a force-feedback stick precisely because the tremors tell me when I am about to break something. Too bad they seem to be out of fashion. Replacing a FF stick will not be easy.
