New player questions

Well i'm not new to flight simulators but are kind of new to combat flight sims, and are really new to BOS. Got some screenshots to help me ask these questions.

First one: This is from my first combat mission in the campaign, strafed some soft ground targets and felt a slight nudge on my plane and got a message that I damaged my aileron, did not reflect too much on it because my plane handled just "fine" (just compensated with some rudder. I got the targets to my right and continue to circle them and went for another strafe, looked out to my left and noticed my wing looked like this. My guess I was able to keep this thing in the air with out any problems was due to I played on "normal" difficulty and damages on the plane does not really affect too much?

Second question: How do I know what type of shells are in the 23 mm gun here? Or even what's in my MG?

Thank you for any answers and have a nice day!

The damage model is the same for normal and hardcore. I think u got lucky if that was controllable. The dm is also progressive for example u can take damage to u wing and it will break later if u over stress it. I wonder if this happened to u I.e. when u had control ur wing was still attached and it was after it broke u noticed

I think blue is armour piercing and orange is explosive/incendiary...I don't pay much attention to this so I could be totally wrong :D

I don't really know when my wing snapped off, but after I noticed the damage I decided to go to the end point and was able to do so just fine. Only thing I was able to really "feel" was that my aileron on the left wing was gone or locked, it pretty much just flew straight.  I got lucky I guess!

Maybe the FM is simplified on Normal? You can probably check this by selecting Normal, then Custom and edit the settings to see what is selected and what isn't.

It's not. FM is fully complex on normal. The only differences between normal and expert are CEM, icons and view restrictions.

To the OP: It's very likely that you collided with the ground or a ground object and structurally damaged your wing. Initially you propably only lost an aileron but as you kept flying (and hence put load on the wing) the damage intensified, eventually tearing half the wing off. It happens often and is a great part of the damage model.

As for the ammo: Blue is armour piercing and good for killing an aircrafts engine and pilot as well as taking out armoured ground targets. Orange is high explosive/incendiary and is great for causing structural damage and setting fuel tanks on fire as well as for killing 'soft' ground targets.
