Is Some Damage Over-Modeled?

Does anyone else think damage from MG and cannon fire is a bit much.  Seems like when I give someone a burst or take one, the plane looks like Swiss cheese.

Personally, no. I just wish the Devs would do some work on the damage decals particularly, on the wood-laminate aircraft.

The damage decals could look better, but I wouldn't say they are overdone.

Remember, that practically all the MGs and autocannon modelled in BoS (save for the MG/FF and the 37mm guns) have rates of fire of some 800 rpm or higher. The double ShKAS on the Yak-1 can potentially spew out 60 bullets per second. That's gonna make your plane look like Swiss cheese pretty fast.

I think so, planes don't just tear in half at the same "cut here" lines every time, metal bends and dangles just look at all the photos. I think there needs to be more bending before breaking of parts.

How often do you see that happening...planes being cut in half I mean?

I've not seen that very often if at all. If we're talking about decals then it would be nice for any graphical improvements but as far as the DM goes I think it is very good. The only thing is that engines seems to run for a long time damaged and fires seem very rare.

Well, from what I've read, wings could literally be with ShKAS.

Taken from the transcript of the interview of Soviet Ace N. Golodnikov.

A. S. I thought it was an old wive’s tale, if I can use that expression, when during the Battle of Britain British pilots said that they cut through German aircraft with machine gun fire.

N. G. No, this could be done with Lewises, and of course also with our ShKASes. The ShKAS, in its rate of fire [approximately 1800 rounds/min], was a unique machine gun. From close range, from 50 meters, a battery of four ShKASes could cut off a wing and on occasion did. At this range, if you held the trigger and didn’t economize on the bullets, you would get some dispersion. It was possible to cut off a tail or a wing, literally to cut it off.

There you have it. I never have personally cut off a wing with the ShKAS, but perhaps we'll see that in BoM, with the I-16!  ;)

For the decals yes it need a improvement from the FX department, but the actual FM is very good,

anyway if PC flight sims should be modeled at some peoples standars in these forums, we would

need 50 time more CPU / GPU power to run a solo flight

The ShKAS is also an effective weapon against the Bf 109. One well-aimed burst into the radiators will have that plane leaking coolant in no time at all.

What I meant was that I don't see wings getting sliced off very often since they reviewed the DM.

One of the best things about the DM in BOS is the way you can damage a wing for example but it doesn't just snap off everytime, you could fly a whole sortie and then pull a high G maneuver and it will suddenly fail.

Yep, I really like the Bo's damage model but it would be cool to see more individual ripping versus a "jump" texture placement

Yes, in certain circumstances perhaps but also remember  we typically aren't shooting at stationary targets.  At combat speeds (say 550 kph for example) both aircraft will be travelling in excess of 150 meters per second.   Registering multiple hits in such circumstances is asking a lot.  The more metal you can put in the air the better of course but even so, the physical distance between individual projectiles will be quite significant in such circumstances.  And this doesn't even allow for the flexing and shaking of the weapons on their individual mountings.  So, are you likely to get good grouping on an enemy aircraft, flying at combat speed - well, I'd say maybe but it depends a lot on individual circumstances.
