BlitzPig_Bill_Kelso Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Ok, long story short... Ok it's a long story! I used a 4870X2 ATI graphics card waaay back and at one time the software/card had an issue where the fan would not spool up under load and I had to resort to using AMD overdrive for manual fan control. I was in the habit of using manual fan and never gave it a second thought as it worked for me. Fast forward to the present and new rig and graphics card R290X 4GB and performance in BoS is ok, but not great. Perhaps 40-45 fps while in game on high settings. I was watching the GPU monitor on a second screen and noticed the GPU would spool down to 350MHz and bounce between 350-625 during gaming. I tried all kinds of different setting to no avail and did some reading on the interweb and found others with this issue but in un related games. I decided to try and OC the GPU to force it higher and lo and behold it worked! 60FPS on ultra with sound settings maxed out Vsync on and all of the junk I could throw at it. The little micro stutters I also experienced were gone as well and BoS played butter smooth thus making my pants tighter than usual. I did some more reading and saw that the 290X likes to run hot and ATI advised to run it around 85C when gaming. I had manual fan control set to cool the GPU to 59C while gaming. So I unchecked manual fan control and let the software control it and the GPU was running near 1000-1070MHz while playing now! End result by using manual fan control and setting temp for 59C I was under clocking the GPU... So if this helps at least one ATI user than I am happy! Side note: BoS was the only game that under clocked, all other games worked as they should while using manual fan control. 1
SharpeXB Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Interesting advice. I saw my Nvidia GPUs were getting "hot" too and I wondered if that was bad. Turns out 70-80C is perfectly normal for graphics cards. I had manually set my fans to keep them about 60C same as you had. Maybe I'll try letting them run hot and see. Mine have dual fans so they will stay cool even at 98% load if I set a decent fan curve.
BlitzPig_Bill_Kelso Posted April 30, 2015 Author Posted April 30, 2015 I know right? It may not make a difference to anyone else but for me it made a huge difference, so I thought I would share.
Static Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 (edited) Use MSI Afterburner to manage all GPU settings. You can create custom fan profiles, overclock, setup a customized OSD to monitor GPU usage, temps, freqs etc while in a game. Edited April 30, 2015 by Static
Dakpilot Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Think this should be moved to hardware, as it is not necessarily a technical bug with the game and many AMD users may find this useful Cheers Dakpilot
