-Roy-Cheesy-Chops Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 dear members i have progressed through this game at a steady pace i have a few questions for you guys out there in the community 1.mixture lean or rich 2.is there a need to have radiator open alot when its a high speed smooth aeroplane 3.whats the tactics involved .a. when taking off .b.flying .c.action in combat zone .d.landing .e.defensive tactics .f.ground attack 4. is there a tailwheel lock 5.use of airbrakes/spoilers 6.is there anything i missed such a bomb bay doors and such things Tartan-81

312_Tygr Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 (edited) Hi Tartan - glad to see you're getting a hang of this exquisite bomber. Here's my take on your questions: 1.change mixture with altitude, I usually start leaning at 2000m (90%) then lean to about 65% at 4500m (which is my favorite cruise altitude). 2.before the patch (and after as far as I can tell) you could keep the water cooler flaps closed when running the engine at 90% boost and 90% RPM. If you're running it flat out it will start overheating, but slowly. 3. Takeoff - only use up to 5 degree flaps when taking off with full fuel and bomb load. Accelerate to 150-170 km/h and gently pull up. Retract landing gear and start climbing when you achieve around 220km/h. At ~200m above ground start retracting the flaps, accelerate to 250km/h and continue climbing. Switch charger gears at 2500m. Cruise - when heavy, cruise on 90% boost and RPM, lean depending on your altitude, radiator closed. When light (on return from bombing run) 70% boost and RPM if you want to save fuel, the same regime as for heavy scenario when you need to make your exit in a hurry. Combat - this really depends on what you want to do. In general get in fast, get out fast. Level bombing works for area targets, smaller targets I either attack from shallow dive (no dive breaks), or steep dive (with dive breaks). For dive, reduce power to 50% boost and RPM, close radiators, increase mixture to 100%, drop bombs when target passes the bottom of your aiming sight. Landing - RPM 100%, up to 20% boost, flaps 30-40% (up to 15 degrees), radiator closed, shallow approach at 200km/h, touchdown on mains, keep it steady. Don't try for three point landing, you'll just stall and crash. Defensive - you have gunners above and below, not from the sides. Keep dodging, use clouds, get your speed up as high as possible, you can get a lot of speed in dive and survive (more than Russian fighters anyway). In general try to make yourself scarce, and avoid fighters as much as possible. Or get escort. I was in a situation where one dude in an FW was trying to kill me with slashing attacks, and pretty much failed, I was empty and dodging all the way, and he wouldn't commit to attacking from my six, so it was a draw in the end. You can and will make it home on one engine, fighters only have one engine on the other hand, and will not make it home on zero engines. Ground attack - see above. Oh and when it comes to bombs - I usually use either 4x250kg or 2x500kg - they hang outside, not in the bomb bay, therefore no need to fiddle with the bomb bay door when carrying them. When carrying smaller bombs open the bomb bay door when approaching the target, close them on your way out. I use 2s bomb delay at all times, just for safety (IRL there was no such thing, but it does come in useful). Choose bomb drop mode (one at a time, pairs, all at once, etc.) to your liking. That depends on the mission. 4. There is no tailwheel lock, but it's not as prone to ground loops as LaGG or La-5. 5. Airbrakes - for dives (unlimited as far as I can tell) and maybe to slow you down on approach if you're too fast. Don't try landing with dive breaks, you'll probably stall in flare. 6. Nothing I can think of. It's pretty straight forward - just remember it has relatively high wing loading, so no sudden action with the elevator and such, and you'll be fine. BTW you can also fight bombers with Peska, treat it as a heavy fighter with low firepower, and quite a bit faster than the opposition. I did shoot down a Stuka or two with it.
