Mastermariner Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 The campaign was initiated in 2005, and since then it has become a tradition to wear the ribbon ahead of May 9 celebrations. For millions of people in Russia and former Soviet countries, the St. George Ribbon is a manifestation of national memory, a bond between generations and a link to former military glory. http://sputniknews.com/russia/20150422/1021213629.html#ixzz3Y1phDaQl Master
Finkeren Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 I would wear one, if I was offered one, but I can't help notice the irony of using the name of a Christian saint to celebrate the victories of the completely secular USSR (the peoples of the Union having many different religions - or none) Why not hand out little red stars instead?
Mastermariner Posted April 22, 2015 Author Posted April 22, 2015 I quite agree with you but the ribbon goes back a long time in Soviet history. Many of our "colours" and stripes goes back to days of religious beliefs that doesn't exist today. Were just stuck with them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ribbon_of_Saint_George Master
