Uriah Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 I selected the mission of IL-2 escort because I just wanted a mission that I could fly all the way from Ahtuba to Kalash by way of way down south of Raygorod to Lipovskiy. I set the options to icons on so I could figure out where I was and get use to the features of the ground from 3,500 k altitude. What struck me was how real things looked and how much I looked for land marks down below. It really felt like when I have done the same in real life. Doing this is going help me know the ground and know where I am when I am flying multiplayer without icons. Not to dis CLOD that has many fine features but there the rivers just get so large you would think that southern England is completely flooded. 2
SCG_Neun Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Glad you are enjoying it Uriah....I have fun with it as well....
6./ZG26_Custard Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 I have to agree guys, I think it looks just fantastic.
wtornado Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Yep it is beautifu and l this game is replacing Flight Simulator X for beautiful ground textures and effects. As long as you do not get shot at..
361fundahl Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 I can't navigate worth a shit in expert mode lol 1
LAL_Luny Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 I use a printed large format map. With a compass and a chronometer its quite easy to navigate. there are many remarkable things (forest towns crossroads...) to check from altitude that help to know you're on the right path
361fundahl Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 When y'all are flying expert..... How close do you get to identify if you are flying towards enemy or not? Probably would be a lot better if they had team radio communication.... (Do they?)

No601_Swallow Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Not to dis CLOD that has many fine features but there the rivers just get so large you would think that southern England is completely flooded. Ah, the fabled Cauldron of Snakes beckoning you from every horizon!
AvengerSeawolf Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 I can't navigate worth a shit in expert mode lol You can say that again, me too , but will try sometime to get to it.
Multimetal Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Looks great! Question-how can you see the ground so clearly? Seems like every time I get above 2k meters or so the ground is so hazy that I can hardly make anything out!

Uriah Posted April 17, 2015 Author Posted April 17, 2015 For those who have a hard time navigating, Get a stop watch. I suggest using your smart phone. Go offline and for Russian start the mission 'IL-2 escort' but have in your settings icons on. Ignore the mission itself. Take off from your field and circle your field enough time to reach say 1,500 meters. Notice where you want to go, notice the compass heading and start your stop watch. Fly there and make generous use of the ingame map. You can zoom in and out. Do this for the same place 5 times. Notice how long it take YOU to fly there in your chosen plane. Have your wife remember all this so you can ask her how much longer to Karpovka. I climb to 3,500 meters. Soon you will get the hang of it. I have done this many a time flying from Ahtuba to Raygorod then to Zety to Logovsky to Kalach and attach the field there then I take the northern rout back to Ahtuba. Having done this numerous times I have a good feeling for the time and the landmarks. I can now do the same without icons and in the Eagle's Nest server. Why so far south? If you get in spotting distance of one of the enemy bases you can just about guarantee getting jumped. Same true heading home but by then I am worried more about how much fuel I have left.
ShamrockOneFive Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 Good suggestions Uriah. I should try and do some real navigation sometime and see how I do. The QMB is a great place to setup a single aircraft takeoff familiarization flight too.
Multimetal Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 Custard-I have an EVGA Geforce GTX 650 Ti Boost-seems to run well but I don't get visibility anywhere near the screenshot that you posted. I've been playing the IL2 series since the original and only just recently picked up BOS, so I'm still learning how to make it run well!

Hi Metal, Don't know if you have seen this thread but it helps an awful lot with viewing distance etc. http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/12501-you-also-think-bos-beautiful-how-about-making-it-absolutly-g/ If you check the last few posts you may find a setting that suits you? I don't use any custom settings on my card (770GTX) I just run it at max on the in-game menu. The other alteration I have made is to the gamma settings by changing them to 0.70000 in the startup config.
Sokol1 Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 If you have a pad or a second PC you can use this lovely utility by NobbyNobbs http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/13908-map-stalingrad-web-browser/ And if you dont have a second PC or a "pad", you can open and use this map over the game using STEAM Browser - no STEAM version of the game is needed, just add as Non-STEAM game. Only open in second monitor dont result practical, when you put the mouse on the map on the second screen the game minimize in the first screen.
