Scrapping the unlock system

I suggest scrapping the unlock system for all premium and standard and the difference between premium and standard being only the two aircraft (per game) that are different.

Since the unlock system is already there it could be left in but all players regardless of version have the button to immediately unlock all equipment just like premium.

Some would argue the development team benefits from unlocks because they use them to generate revenue from the purchase of premium but I would counter that many more people are upset and are holding out on enjoying this series due to unlocks.  A developer diary noting this would go a long way so players could give their disenfranchised friends a reason to get back to the Eastern Front.

I would like to note this is a suggestion to the developer team and those posting unreasonably negative comments below are not in the business of helping the cause.  Please be constructive in comments ladies and gentlemen.

I agree the unlocks system has done far more harm than it had generated premium Buyers. It has been a bad idea from the word go.

I hope they get it right eventually

Get rid of it and introduce rewards that people would like such as skins that can be downloaded (and modded) instead.

The whole idea of rewards sounds so... gamey to me.. My reward was always taking off or landing successfully or surviving a mission..  I guess the skins thing is not a bad idea.. but the whole unlocks thing was a bust from day one...

The unlocks (plane mods) make more sense now that you can buy them. In that aspect the game is just like Rise of Flight. Even more flexible because in this case, unlike RoF you can also win them in the game.

The way that both games let you modify the planes in historically correct ways is a great feature. BoS actually does this in a more appealing way really.

As much as I truly like and respect the developers of BoS. I must admit, they don't have a very clear understanding of what makes for good gameplay.

As your thread shows, a bit of thought and narrative would have livened the campaign up by miles and personally I think that the unlocks would have worked quite well (only as part of a career system and not forced on everyone else!) had they a. not been called unlocks for a start (gigantic mistake!) and b. if they had been implemented in a more interesting way.

I don't think it is gamey for a new pilot with the lowest rank to be just be given a plane out of the pool which they couldn't modify and to be told what weapons & fuel load they would carry depending on the mission. Once you fly more missions you gain rank and with rank comes more responsibility so you get more input in to the ordnance your flight will carry (or planning) and therefore X weapon/weapons are unlocked for this mission. Another idea would be that with increasing rank you get assigned your own ground crew which gives you access to field mods and weapons etc. Of course all of this requires there to be a pilot career implemented for a start. From what I saw in ROF (I think it might have been the Beta career?) they had pilot tracking for AI and player pilots which looked like a pretty good idea, I'd also have limited aircraft numbers so you don't always fly the same crate (aircraft being out of action when damaged) which would change the effectiveness of your squadron for a while if you'd take heavy casualties/damage.

This is kind of misleading.. You cannot "buy them" in the sense that you can do that in RoF.. Regardless they are a bad idea and hopefully eventually they will be scrapped.

Maybe Sharpe meant you can buy the unlocks by going premium?

Right. You can basically "buy" the unlocks by getting the Premium Edition. You just can't buy them individually. Of course you can't buy planes in BoS individually except for two of them.

I had actually assumed all along that would be the case but it looks like it was a genuine change of direction. The Devs did actually say when the unlocks were announced you wouldn't be able to buy them. Apparently RoF was perceived as a "pay to win" game and they wanted to avoid that. But then that left players forced to "grind" for content. So a compromise was offered. It's now more like a lot of other games where you can earn upgrades or buy them. It's now just an incentive to buy the premium version. Personally I didn't mind being "forced" to play this game for 55 hours. I quite enjoyed it ;-)
