Losing window focus

I've been away from gaming for a while, but after 4h of updating windows (7), drivers and the game, I thought I could finally get going. However, IL2Sturmovik goes into background showing me my empty desktop at every opportunity. I doubt the game has kept focus for more than single digit seconds at any time. Unplayable, of course, but what is happening? Surely this is not the norm, or this place would be a riot.

 

If I run windowed instead of full screen, IL2 gets pushed into background, showing the menu bar, at about the same frequency. It gives focus back to IL2 after a few seconds, but then loses it again. At every time focus is lost, so are controls, although the game progresses.

 

The problem is not IL2 specific. I get the exact same problem with ROF. These are the only two games I have, so I have little else to compare with.

Sounds like there is some other program running in the background that is stealing the focus. Look into performing a clean boot in Win 7 and try it.

You can also look in task manager to see what programs are running in the background.
