Hopper64 Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 Just got this new monitor and I have a small problem. Noticed my 980 stays at 1012MHz if the RR is set at 144, so I changed it to 120 with no problem. It decreased to 135MHz at idle. But when I play the game, I guess it defaults back to 144 on the RR every time. Is there a setting in game that I am missing here? Thanks. BTW-I have set the RR to 120 in the game and applied it. No matter what I do, it still defaults to 144 on the RR after I exit the game.
SYN_Lt_Dan Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 Go to Nvidia control panel and then select change resolution and in the refresh rate box set 120hz and it should do the trick
Hopper64 Posted April 3, 2015 Author Posted April 3, 2015 That's the problem. I have to do that after exiting the game each time. The game changes it somehow to 144 and I have to change it back to 120. I have it set to 120 in the game as well. ??
SYN_Lt_Dan Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 oh right i see uninstall the driver and re install again see if that works
Hopper64 Posted April 3, 2015 Author Posted April 3, 2015 (edited) Stupid mistake. Reinstalled and noticed in my program tab settings in the Nvidia CP that I had "Highest Available" for the refresh rate instead of "Application Controlled". Dumb Dumb me. Thanks for the help. dburne Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 Strange, I have a 144 hz monitor that I run at 144 hz, and my GTX 970 downclocks to 135 MHz at idle desktop.
VR-DriftaholiC Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 I'm confused why you prefer 120 over 144? Clock speed isn't going to decrease the life of your card so I'm confused why you care if it downclocks. You will only save a few nickels a year in power and the fan profile can be changed if it's a noise issue.
Hopper64 Posted April 3, 2015 Author Posted April 3, 2015 It's the temp. I am so used to the cards idling at 135 when not in use. I don't think I will notice a difference in a RR of 120 vs. 144 in performance or frame rate for sure. The temp difference is only about 5-10C, but I just like it as cool as possible on air. Dburne I guess your monitor resolution is 1920x.... My old monitor had a resolution natively of 1920x...whatever I don't remember... and had a RR of 144, but the combo of a higher RR + higher Resolution requires "a higher pixel clock and thus a higher idle clockspeed." Per a guy at another forum. This new monitor has a resolution of 2560x1440. That's probably the difference.

VR-DriftaholiC Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 Only temps you need worry about are the loaded ones to keep the card from downclocking and allowing it to use the boost feature.
Hopper64 Posted April 6, 2015 Author Posted April 6, 2015 Yes, it's just personal preference. Is there any major performance hit by limiting the RR to 120?
