I do apologies if this topic has already been done, and done to death.

The il2 BOS page talks about the minimum spec to run this game but doesn't go much further than that.

In that (from memory) it doesn't have a recommended spec (most boxed games had a minimum spec and a recommended spec).

I know that tech changes all the time and GPU's and CPU's get superseded all the time, but it would be nice to know what type of system would benefit this game.

I know a little about pc components, but have no idea where to make improvements with my rig.

Sure throwing a better GPU in is bound to give an improvement, but at what point does the CPU and MOBO need to be upgraded (go from 1155 to 1150 to 2011 etc)?

How much RAM would benefit this game, and at what point does extra ram contribute nothing towards performance so you know to put any extra money towards a GPU/ CPU and MOBO).

With FSX there is a page on the internet where you can enter the specs of your rig, and it will tell you what kind of performance to expect (and therefore what you need to change, but playing around with the different hardware options).

First I would recommend posting your full current specs and go from there :)

I run  the game on  a phenom, II X4 965 3.4ghz with 4GB ram  mobo cannot take any more  and a R7 radeon 260Xwith 2gb ram. Game runs pretty smooth no stutters in most highest settings. and antialliasing off..

My advice is that the first you got to invest is a good graphics card.  CPU  can take it if it is a good one even 4 years old and have at least 4gb ram., tough 8gb and a newer strong PCU would be better.,Keep your power unit no less than 600W though.

Hey Dakpiot

My system specs

Win 7 64 bit

CPU:  i5 3570K (not over clocked)

MOBO: P8 Z77- V - LK

RAM: 8GB @1600, not sure timings, but it was not that expensive

GPU: GTX 660 DC OC 2GB (no extra over clocking)

Hard drive: was installed on a normal HDD but recently upgraded SSD (Samsung evo 850), haven't re-installed it yet, so not sure what if any boost that gives it.

Performance: mainly used on "high" with AA set to max, never really used ultra as it dropped my fraps too much at low alt (mid to low 30's at low alt over a city from memory), when off line occasional stutterings, and when the enemy plane is in front/ in a cloud the outline goes blurry/ fuzzy.

Not sure if more RAM will have any affect (apparently this game is single thread???), or if I should just go straight for a new GPU.

8GB of 1600 ram should be more than enough, I would not expect to see a big change upgrading to 16GB or faster Ram would only be necessary if doing an extreme O/C

Your SSD is good try installing Samsung Magician software, it is actually quite good to optimise and get the best from your HDD

I don't believe BoS benefits from any of the improvements to data handling that Win 8/8.1 has unless perhaps you are using the latest hardware and even then the improvements would be minimal

Win 7 64bit is good only worth upgrade when Win 10 becomes mainstream

There are small benefits to upgrading from 3570k to 4970k but they are not so huge and need new MB and new chip...IMHO (which is not that knowledgeable really) I don't think the benefits would justify the cost at the moment, best to wait for skylake intel chip release and see the real world tests.

I (think) the biggest improvement you will see is a GPU upgrade, many people are breaking 3GB VRAM with terrain .ini mods and with my GTX770 2GB version I get significant FPS improvements when I drop the resolution a couple of steps to 1600 X 900, proving the GPU bottleneck with that card, an upgrade to a GTX970 will improve things and allow more eye candy options and give more VRAM headroom. A GTX980 will leave you bottlenecked by CPU and allow all eye candy at higher resolutions but limited at certain situations with min FPS due to clock speed of your 3570k at stock speeds.

As the cost of GTX980 is considerably higher than the benefits you get compared to GTX970 that is a choice for your wallet :) bear in mind that the 980 has full use of 4GB VRAM where the 970 has 3,5GB of fast VRAM with the remaining 500mb being used at a slower speed.

A GTX970 is the sweet spot in performance/price especially if you are not using very big resolutions (above 1920 x 1080)

Your other option is to overclock your 3570k the MB is capable

I use ASUS software for auto overclock to modest and stable figures (I am Lazy and its safe ;) ) do not know if your MB has that software but it works easily with one button press, until a solid stable safe overclock is found. I get 4.46Ghz which really shows up as an improvement in min FPS numbers. Bear in mind that you may/will need to upgrade you CPU cooler from standard, closed loop watercoolers are simple safe and give good results and allow you to get the benefit of buying the unlocked "k" models higher initial purchase price

So my "real world advice" lol, would be to overclock your CPU to a modest level (it WAS designed to do that) and get a GTX970 or GTX980 in "a bargain sale" if you are feeling flush and wait 1-1,5 years to upgrade the rest

Cheers Dakpilot,

Any money I had going towards ram will be re-directed to GPU, and CPU cooling :)

Purchased GTX 970.

Saw the game in store, and read the back of the box which has the recommended specs:

CPU: i5/ i7 2.8 GHZ or faster

Ram: 6GB

Hard disk: 10GB

GPU: 2gb vram, Geforce GTX 660/ ATI radeon HD7770 or better

Def, what brand did you get?

Posted

Galax Black edition. Could not turn down the fact that it was $100 cheaper than any other brand....am on a bit of a budget having just got a 49" 4K monitor  and half the price of a 980 with 80% of the performance...to get more VRam  the next step up for 4K would be a TitanX at about $1700 not going there!! so GTX970 was the only choice

This one

A fraction louder than my previous MSI GTX770 SOC (1 size smaller fans) but cant be heard in game and temps very low, so no worries, did a lot of research before accepting the $100 cheaper price compared to better known brands..so far very impressed with build quality

I went the ASUS STRIX, had to take it back the next day due to one of the wires for one of the fans was hanging low enough to get hit by the fan blades.....very interesting noise......

I couldn't see the reason to go the 980, there just wasn't enough of a performance bonus to cover the extra cost (in Australain dollar my GPU was $500, the 980 was like $750).

My country 980 exactly double the cost of 970 and as you say not enough of a performance gain especially as 980 has same Vram
