Albino Posted March 28, 2015 Posted March 28, 2015 Hello everyone I request some advice and expressions of interest. I am interested in financially contributing to the running of a server for Australian/New Zealand/Asian players in the Oceanic region. I imagine this would involve paying a 'cloud' platform like Amazon or Google a regular fee to host the server. Could anyone advise me how much this would cost (and what cloud resources would be required). Could any players from the Oceanic region who are interested in contributing also make themselves known? I have no experience running a server so all advice is welcome! Regards Albino
Albino Posted March 28, 2015 Author Posted March 28, 2015 Apologies for the bump. It appears I can't edit after posting. Looking at a game server providers it seems that prices are generally 1 AUD or less per slot. So for a small 32 player server that would be $384/year. HOWEVER - that appears to be for mainstream games, like Minecraft, Battlefield 4 and CSGO. It might cost more to have a provider setup IL2BOS since it would be unfamiliar to them. I'm also unsure how much control the customer gets. For example; these services might not allow the customer to regularly create and deploy new missions. Alternatively, it might be possible to pay for a virtual machine instance and then deploy dServer youself. Though I have no experience with this! Can anyone share their expertise on this? Regards Albino
Felix58 Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 Hi Albino, Your first battle will be to see if you can get enough players (payers) interested in the concept. Then find someone who can make scenarios and load them on the server etc. Not going to be easy. However, my understanding is that the AEF have a server, but not supporting BOS at present. Check their website http://www.aef-hq.com.au/ Perhaps approaching them on a cost share basis might be an idea. Good luck with the idea,
Albino Posted March 30, 2015 Author Posted March 30, 2015 (edited) Hi Felix Thanks for your response! Yes at the moment it seems more difficult than I had anticipated + server rental is more than I'd expected. I think being in Western Australia the pings to US are worse than the East Coast. Thus it probably isn't as important for most Australians to have an Oceanic server. I'll keep my eyes on the multiplayer scene and perhaps look at this when there's more documentation on the dServer! novicebutdeadly Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 (edited) The main problem that I find, is that no-one seems to play on the US servers that have the lowest ping.Everyone seems to play mainly on the European servers. In regards to cost, in il2 1946 the BF servers managed the cost by allowing people to become members (for a monthly subscription). This gave them certain privileges like the ability to boot people etc.I would be interested in an Oceanic server, and it would hopefully get more "locals" interested. Albino Posted March 30, 2015 Author Posted March 30, 2015 The membership model sounds interesting. dServer has only been in the wild a month. If the US servers get some interesting missions perhaps they will become more popular? At the prices available from server hosts it seems you'd be better off buying the kit yourself, if only you get could the bandwidth in Aus!
Felix58 Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Hello Oz Pilots, I have made an initial enquiry to the AEF gaming group based in Sydney re hosting BOM/BOS on their server. Expressions of interest would help the cause. If you are interested in having a Oz based persistent BOS server, could you post something here. AEF BOS thread This could be our best chance to get a cost effective solution to having an Oz based persistent server.
