I have seen the future of flight simming

Things are moving along quite nicely as I see it and hopefully 777 and the OR guys are talking it out to make the implementation smooth.  Im wondering if the OR build will be in the release on Tuesday.

I sure hope NOT !

With all the things we need first for BOS, OR is something I really hope they don't work on until they finally release the game next spring. To do so would be for the benefit of the very very FEW and take time and resources away from the rest of the sim, and people who've already been waiting.

How many people here right now have OR ? Less than a dozen ?

Don't get me wrong, once OR is mature I want it and I want filght sim's to support it !

But it is not ready for prime time, wont be for a while and as such BOS dev's should be concentrating on getting the stuff they need done for the rest of us.

thx1138, implementing OR is really not a big task and has taken little away from the overall development, Zak has already confirmed that the alpha already supports OR and has done since August, this says that they have completed the main work of the implementation, also non OR users won't be forced into experiencing any part of that feature, most developers make it a feature that has to be specifically turned on, I have an OR and am very happy to have the unique feature to test.

Ok, cool then.

I just don't want the dev's to get distracted by OR at the moment. Of around 3000 + founders, catering to a small precent now is crazy, but if it's already in, well good I hope.

I just don't want it to be like people wanting the best eyecandy possible and then telling others they have to upgrade their PC's because the sim is too much for them. I'm not worried about that here, and BOS I'm sure will scale well just like ROF. But us masses are what the dev's should be catering to.

You guys do the OR testing and when it really is stable and ready I'll get one.

From what I read, BoS has full compatibility with OR and they are taking it very seriously. I think it will storm the gaming world in full force in the next few years. I can imagine how it must looks like. Awesome.

The Oculus Rift or similar hardware is the future of gaming, and game developers should, and are taking it very seriously now rather than later.  Loft is a prime example, he seen it, and was blown away enough to immediately implement it in BOS.   Luckily OR support doesn't appear to require to much work to implement.  That said, I'm sure there are more than a few tweaks that could be made to the OR software, and game software to make the experience even better.  Which is "one" of the reasons the dev kits were sent out in the first place.   BOS is in a good position to tweak the sim/game engine while BOS is still in development, rather than rewriting features for BOS/OR support after its done.   Flight sims are going to be very popular with VR users, as the feel of flight is incredible with this type of hardware.   Support for these devices could increase a sims revenue in a genre that sorely needs it.

Honestly, i think that the idea of a small cam, like those in a smartphone, is a great idea!!

It should be installed on the front panel of the device.. By clicking on a small switch, the user - instead of viewing the game, sees what's in front of him.... in 3D even :)

I know there have been a couple of gaming keyboards in the past. They might still be out there for what I know. It would be nice if we could get one set up for sims. One that featured larger keys and toggle switches laid out in such a fashion that one could learn their position and find them easily while wearing a VR unit.

Key options could also get remapped to voice command ...

Seems like OR opens possibilities for bailing or maybe for not bailing any longer :)

Speaking of hitting the silk, we will have 2 seaters and bombers: shouldn't they be able to bail to?

In the long run one could add a buttkicker under the chair, FFB to the foot-rudder ...
a ventilator in front for simulating an open cockpit, bailing  :P
but lets stop short off sprinklers above

Yeah there has been support for awhile. I was just hoping that they would leave in the support.

Honestly as easy as it is to support. I would actually suggest that they only get heavy into implementation when the dk2 comes out. Because though it works in the game now. (Ive tried it) it needs tweaks. But its still short of a full experience because of the dev kit 1 limitations. (Low res) all that being said. I think they understand implementation well enough to quickly update any changes that the dk2 offers.

I must admit, I do hope TD can one day incorporate it into the original Il-2.  That old girl still has a lot of life left in her.

IM not sure it would be that great as there is no 3d effect is there?

There is a third party driver called tridef and used in conjunction with a DXwrapper which actually works to a degree, I have had a little test and it is surprising, there is 3d in IL2 with the oculus but some stuff needs attention like shadows and trees which behave strangely in cockpit view, but external views are quite good without any of those weird artefacts but somehow it feels like you are in a microworld rather than experiencing true scale......in time maybe this stuff will get fixed.

The devkit 2 eliminates a HUGE percentage of the resolution problems, imo, and is just what is needed for a good sim experience. I got to try the 2nd devkit at this year's PAX prime and if I hadn't previously known of the resolution issues, it wouldn't even have come to mind that it was an issue with the new screen they're using. That being said, I'm selling my OR devkit if anyone is interested, haha.

Bongodriver, do you have a link for a working config for 1946? I'd like to give it a whirl.

you have to use the tridef ignition driver, tridef itself has a 14 day trial, in addition you need to download gldirect  http://sourceforge.net/projects/gldirect/ and put only the dx8Wrap.dll file in the game directory, make sure the game is set to run in OpenGL mode, this is the only config for tridef and IL2 I found so far http://www.tridef.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=875

Thanks. I'll check it out and report back if I notice anything...just got Jet Era working (for the first time ever) with 4.12.2, it's super awesome!

Nice, I must have a look at the jets in IL2, another flight sim (lesser known) that I got working with tridef was Strike Fighters 2, it must be forced into DX9 mode, this probably means Strike Fighters 1 works by default (dx9 game)

Thank you very much for the write up. The potential looks amazing.

Re control - one option is the CH Throttle quadrant, which I have always used for IL2. Six levers and twelve buttons and the levers can have different heads so you know what they are by touch.

One problem I can foresee is that my eyes are far apart, so binoculars etc are tricky. I wonder how OR would deal with that. I thought it was 2 screens as well but I can see a problem if it's just one.

1 screen is not a problem because it simply renders 2 images on that 1 screen, if your eyes are unnaturally far apart then not much can be done without adjustable lenses, I imagine the consumer rift will have something like that.

If I recall correctly, games that have calibration procedures that measure and adapt to your interpupillary distance, I think that's what IPD stands for, corrects for that kind of issue. Unless you cannot fit the OR over your eyes themselves...but the OR is pretty damn wide.

it is wide but the lenses are in fixed position (roughly average IPD) and the screen calibration can only work over a limited range because of the lense limits.

Thanks. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Have just heard from OR. The lenses are set to an average IPD of 65mm.

My IPD is 78mm and they say that could be a problem and I need to try a set before buying.

That sounds encouraging. I honestly thought I'd be done with Il-2 by now, but it looks like it will still be with me for another ten.
