The Search For Extra Terrestrial Life

Gentlemen,

As of late, I find myself mounting scientific expeditions into the thin, crisp air above Stalingrad.  Why, you ask?  Why would I fly my IL-2 up above the clouds, like a fool with an oxygen mask?

Well, let me tell you.

Have you ever noticed strange shapes descending from above the clouds?  They are clearly man-made, but they are openly hostile.  All attempts at making contact were rebuffed.  They come shrieking downward, unleash a barrage of projectiles (which, if you are not careful to avoid them, can seriously damage yourself or your airframe!) and then zoom back up from whence they came.

One day, when I watched a couple of them disappear skyward once more, I tried to think about what their motivation was.  If only we could communicate.

I realized that I'd never tried to visit them on their own terms.  Thus this endeavour was born!

Slowly, but surely I coaxed my engine to climb up as high as I could... 4km was a struggle, but it placed me with a vantage point that I had never been afforded before.  Such a beautiful view.  No wonder this magnificent and elegant creatures lived up here!

All of a sudden, I noticed what appeared to be a white snake crossing the sky.  Breathtaking.  Majestic.  Mine eyes, they became misty.

I opened my canopy and waved furiously, trying to make contact!  Alas, their path continued along unchanged.  My spirits began to flag... perhaps I simply could not comprehend their cognitive sensory processes.   I quickly engage my landing lights, my navs, even the cockpit light!  No deviation.

As my countenance began to sag, something caught my eye... my flare gun!  Of course!  Surely this blinding light would be a universal signal!

I began to send flares skyward, with abandon!  Reds, Whites, Greens!

But, to no avail.  I was out of flares, and the anomaly simply continued on.  Perhaps there was business to attend to that I was unable to comprehend.

Temporarily I was disheartened... but as I returned home to Leninsk, I realized that making contact might be a long and difficult process.  I asked myself... "Self... are you up for this challenge?" and after a moment of contemplation I replied "Yes, other voice, you bet your sweet ass I am."

And so, some time later, I donned my early-war high altitude research gear and proceeded to make the climb once again.  I had no idea what I would discover.

Far, far above me... a brilliant white orb... not snaking through the sky... but seemingly hovering... perhaps just too far above to see detail?

Perhaps someone can assist me with the identification:

Could this be some higher form of life, peering down upon us as we struggle against ourselves in vain?

It's 4 20's and a pair of MG's just opening up. You can barely make out the Fw's cowling behind the flashes :)

It looks very much higher....is it the dove of peace?

I don't know, 80... Are you sure that the oxygen deprivation at 4k wasn't doing strange things to your noggin'? Are you starting to go "raaaid" on all of us?!

The orbs you see (or don't see) don't exist! Nothing to see here... Move along!

"All discussions that are not directly related to IL2:BOS"

Well, I can't say I am not puzzled, as I figured this was relating about as directly to BoS as you could get (I mean, I can't PROVE the second screenshot is BoS, you'd have to take me at my word)... but hey, it was just for fun, and I am not gonna bitch about it.

:salute:

I'm assuming no IL-2's were lost during your foo fighter adventure?

Talking of Extra-terrestrials in flight sims,  I remember the first "flight" sim I ever played was Aviator by Acornsoft ,which allowed you to fly your Spitfire upside-down and under bridges and shoot down an invading alien horde! (well one or two) All in mighty monochrome Mode 5 graphics.
