AvengerSeawolf Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 (edited) Hi folks and greets to the sim flying community here. After loooong time not playing any combat flight sims I decided to get back . Invested on a X55 rhino, more ram and a very good GPU , so what's next are the games. These days graphics became phenomenal good in almost all terms, as well as the flight physics I believe got advanced. Thinking to buy this BoS in DVD and would like to ask an important question. First. Recently I got my DVD for the Il-2 CloD (new , sealed and in it's box along with another collection of Il-2) so far so good. After puting it in my drive to install it, that steam programm popped up and wanted to install What the "heck" I thought and I have installed it. But after all the set ( new account in steam - log in ect.ect.) nothing happened. That steam would try to start and then freeze. Needless to say I could not install the game that I have paid for ( new in it's sealed case). Nevertheless after loosing almost a day to find why, and try almost all solutions I found on forums and on the net to correct it) that steam was ( and still does) freeze. I was forced to find a cracked version of the game in order to install it to my PC. Question. I want also to buy BoS in DVD , will there also be a steam thing poping up inorder to instal the game ?? I DO NOT WANT STEAM ON MY PC. I only want the game. Will I be able to INSTALL and PLAY the BoS when I buy a DVD, whitout installing that steam ?? Thank you. Edited March 21, 2015 by AvengerSeawolf
dburne Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 Nope, buy BOS direct from the site here, Steam is not required to run it like it is with Cliffs of Dover.
Jaws2002 Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 (edited) I really don't understand this Steam phobia. I have steam on my gaming rigs for over ten years and never had one problem. All the games I ever got with steam had been ready to go for me through multiple computers, partial hardware upgrades, OS installs and upgrades. I lost a bunch of the dvds and cds with games and software on them, bu everything I had with steam was saved and reinstalled automatically as soon as I installed Steam. I'm not saying it can't have bugs, or act up one way or another, but in my opinion, a lot of the crap thrown at Steam all this years was uncalled for. Valve/Steam did more for the PC gaming world than any other company out there. Edited March 21, 2015 by Jaws2002 1

I ended up buying everything again and still saved money but there is one reason
AvengerSeawolf Posted March 21, 2015 Author Posted March 21, 2015 (edited) Buy here http://il2sturmovik.com/ Nope, buy BOS direct from the site here, Steam is not required to run it like it is with Cliffs of Dover. Thank you for your answers. !! That sounds GREAT !!! I'd really buy anything that hasn' t steam on it. I loved Il-2 back in 2001 and have bought all the series. Now I will get my practice skills on at the Cliffs of Dover and the War Thunder. My targeting sucks and also need to refresh to my self all the evasive manuvers I was able to do back then. I'll buy the BoS , first chance. , will be my next purchase\ P.S. I have heard that more maps from other seasons will be added latter on to the game ( i.e. summer autumn ect.) Is this true ? Tha would be a nice addition since all white all the time can be boring after a while. Cheers.! Edited March 21, 2015 by AvengerSeawolf

And of cource is not any kind of phobia, it is just a matter of liking it or not. I like to be legit, buy my DVD, install the game put my key and enjoy, not to have to go through hell , because of a third company- reseller , middleman or ( whatever it is) wants to take control of my actions and with a software that does not work. In my pc "career" I have used zillions of programs and what I know is some work and some won;t. This one on 2 pc's I have tried does not work no matter what , and since many thousands of people have the same problem it is not just me. SO for the moment ain't going to support any product that requires steam in order to work. And if all people do that, then this would teach them a lesson on first to produce a reliable software and service and then ask for money. That's the way it goes cause money do not grow on trees ( I wish they would though ) Edited March 21, 2015 by AvengerSeawolf
dburne Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 I am sure Steam is fine , and certainly understand why some would want all their games in the Steam library. For me it is just another program running to run a game, the only reason I have it is for Cliffs of Dover, which has to have it. I do not have any issues running Cliffs with Steam, seems to run very well. I just prefer not to have that extra layer, and why every other flight sim I own is not a Steam version of the product.
1CGS BlackSix Posted March 22, 2015 1CGS Posted March 22, 2015 P.S. I have heard that more maps from other seasons will be added latter on to the game ( i.e. summer autumn ect.) Is this true ? Tha would be a nice addition since all white all the time can be boring after a while. We’re working on the Summer and Fall Stalingrad maps which are going to distributed freely among all BOS players in Q3 2015. 1
Yakdriver Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 I really don't understand this Steam phobia. Valve/Steam did more for the PC gaming world than any other company out there. -i want the game... nothing but the game, and exclusively the game. -i can manage my licences and my DVD's and my ISO files on my own. [backup is the name of the game] -i need to inform nobody of what game i play for how long, when, on what server...(...) -i am not a fan of the ads / the propaganda that are served with steam steam rendered gaming more comfortable for gamers... and last i checked they were a company, and made good cash... so its a commercial service, and from a rudimentary pov... they did not do that for the gamers... they did that for themselves. company...stakeholders...assets...business model and so forth. nothing wrong with that. good for them, good for their happy customers. not my kind of thing tho. 1

J2_Trupobaw Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 (edited) Avenger Seawolf: the version of BoS you can buy on this site is non-steam (and electronic delivery only). I think the boxed versions are all steam-only so you won't be able to put box on your shelf while avoiding steam. I really don't understand this Steam phobia. I have steam on my gaming rigs for over ten years and never had one problem. All the games I ever got with steam had been ready to go for me through multiple computers, partial hardware upgrades, OS installs and upgrades. I really don't understand this "I'm comfortable with it, so surely it's comfortable for everyone else" fallancy. I'm OK without faith so nobody needs religion, I can't hold my liquor so people shouldn't drink alcohol, I'm MP only so this game does not need a career mode, I'm OK with sheep so you guys who prefer women are in error, I like unlocking field mods, graphic presets and current campaign (especially Hello Kitty medals) in BoS so... ok, the last one goes to far ... I'm glad steam worked for you and you never had a problem with it, wish you it stays that way, but don't assume your situation is universal, or even typical. Steam is another layer of software that may and does fail on user. *When* it works, it does everything advertised and lets you run your games; when it fails (in "crashes so early it can't even download path that prevents crashing" way), you lose not only extra bells and whistles that steam provides, but can't play your games, either. If you don't understand steam phobia just be glad of it, it means you've been lucky so far. Edited March 22, 2015 by Trupobaw 1

Sokol1 Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 AvengerSeawolf For a game receiving constantly updates like this one is not advantage have then in DVD, because if you install he DVD in future the patchs needed download to update the game will be almost equal to download a new updated version, what avoid conflicts with old controls/graphics config from DVD versions. Anyway at any point you can just write in DVD's the game folder (whit the latter updat) and after just extract then for some drive (C: D:...) - or a new computer - make shortcut for Launcher.exe and the game will work. In the case of the other game (first post) what can happen is the STEAM version in the DVD is very outdated (probable from 2011) what cause the problem.

Problem is the steam it' self. I have downloaded and installed the new version , the program did connect to the internet since ports were forwarded and no windows firewall for it. it did log in but it will never move to any point after that. I just uninstalled it and it is ok for me not bother any more with that.
J2_Trupobaw Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 How long ago was it? Steam is constantly being updated and de-bugged, too, and latest versions have been trouble free (for me ).
