TheNotoriousFNG Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 With a new graphics card finally in my budget, I got to thinking about this thread's title. Since there's a multitude of setups out there, I was curious how the community felt was the best way to immerse and experience this sim...be it hardware setups, seats, little knickknacks that contribute to your enjoyment of this great piece of software, what is it that really helps immerse you? I find my best experience is headphones on, map on my lap and typically running my display through my 50" TV.
ACG_pezman Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 Get track IR and then set your controls up good. You could buy a flight sim desk or you can diy it. Google cockpit setups and get some ideas.
TheNotoriousFNG Posted March 18, 2015 Author Posted March 18, 2015 Haha, I should've mentioned in my OP that I do have a TrackIR and a PVC contraption I built for my x52! I guess I poorly worded it, just was curious how the community played/felt they got the most out of the sim!
ACG_pezman Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Then get a butt kicker, its supposed to add a new level of depth.
AbortedMan Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Join the Eagle's Nest server! We had a flight of 6 people in comms and formation today cleaning up the skies. The rest of our team saw us and joined in for a total of 10 all flying together. Teamwork is the best way to enjoy this game. 2
Yakdriver Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Hm. A proper CPU and 8 Gigs of RAM, a correct graphics card in the mix is the first element for me. The machine must run well and be balanced. a stable and clean internet connection is the next with a stick/pedals/ custom build cockpit elements for "piloting" instead of "gaming" including trackIR Third, i would say a large screen (24 inches 1920x1200) lastly, and not the least of all environment (silence multiplied by hours + fingerfood and beverages [i prefer raw carrots and vegetables, cola or "sparkling water"]) that's the best setup i can imagine for me. 1
BlueHeron Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 All very good points for enjoyment. I have most of them, but several hours of silence is the hardest one to acquire!

If you're enjoying BoS with "several hours of silence", check the tutorials - I'm sure one of them will explain how to start the engine(s). (Just kidding). Once you have a computer that will nicely handle the game at good settings, a joystick and head tracking put it all together for me. Regards, 4 <salute>

I've got TS updated and ready to go, just been playing campaign a lot to unlock more of the skins (I'm a bit of a completionist, ha!). What time/days do you guys normally jump on anyway? Regards, 4 <salute> I'm doing pretty good in that department, I think. I'm running an i2500k at OC'd to 4.0 Ghz, 16 gigs of DDR3 and 2 TB of HD space (going to SSD when funds allow). I believe my system's weak point to be the single 560 Ti, hence why I'm looking at upgrading to a more powerful graphics card. I'm using CH Pedals and an X52 for my controllers, and they've served me quite well, haha.

What time/days do you guys normally jump on anyway? We're on every day during evening hours in a myriad of timezones...mostly North American east coast and west coast, but we have a handful from Brazil, Eastern Europe and Australia/NZ. There's usually at least 10 of us on comms during playtime!
avlSteve Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 (edited) I was all set up with triple monitors @ 5760 x 1080 which was pretty impressive and fun, but ultimately I couldn't deal with the "zoomed" resolution. It was fine offline and great for navigating but in an online dogfight I would lose tally if I blinked. So I re-mounted them on the stand vertically and the resolution was way more to my liking, but the stand wouldn't allow a seamless vertical installation without gaps or odd angles. Duals won't do at all because of the debilitating "line" between them right at the gun sight, so I'm back down to a single 22 incher @ 1920 x 1080. I've got a few other priorities, but at some point I'll likely be in the market for a new high res monitor. Edited March 19, 2015 by avlSteve
Georgio Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 Wait until VR gets going by whoever wins the race to bring it to the masses, THEN you will experience all your titles how they were designed and I would hope that BoS will be up there as the best of the bunch for immersion.

I.might sound a bit negative here but I think that vr will start to become mainstream towards the end of this generation of sim. And be normal in the next

I just feel like I need a bit more practice before I venture into online again...rather be more than a flying target! Am I in the minority who doesn't believe that VR headsets are really the future of gaming? It's rather hard to operate the myriad of controls and controllers if you can't see them! Something along the lines of this seems more suitable for an awesome simming experience, IMO. 1

I hadn't thought about that aspect of OR… I've mainly been way worried about motion sickness, as I can't say, watch someone play call of duty without getting queasy real fast. I've got a few other priorities, but at some point I'll likely be in the market for a new high res monitor. Did you say that last night and then the next morning start looking at high res and 4k monitors, and almost bought one within a day?

Guest deleted@30725 Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 If I want to fly solo I like to put my favourite music on. It helps enhance the experience.

The 560 Ti is definitely on the older/lower performance side of things these days (good in its day tho!). I'm looking at an upgrade to a GTX 960 myself. It sounds like the other areas of your system are in good shape.

I shall try to make it on, busy these days! I'm so used to communities being "RTFM" that I usually stick to offline until I have a good handle on things, ha! You're probably right. I was thinking about the 960 as well, but I'm wondering if the performance increase is going to be entirely there with BoS. I was eyeing the 2 GB model, but I'm not sure if I should just save and go for a higher end like the 970 and up.

I have a GTX770 2GB which has almost identical performance to the 960, while it runs BoS very well on my system, at 1920X1080 it is being just overstretched for any Nvidia inspector tweaks, which improve the picture quality so much, and am looking to upgrade to 970 or 980 for higher res which the 770 2gb cannot cope with Cheers Dakpilot
=AVG=Zombie Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 With booze and a half naked flight attendant....
dburne Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 The GTX 970 is hard to beat, value for dollar wise. Be aware, it has a vram limitation - of the 4gb of vram, it accesses 3.5gb at one time, if a game needs more, it will access the last .5 gb in a slower part of the memory architecture, could cost a little in performance if more that 3.5 gb is needed during gameplay. I have an EVGA GTX 970 FTW and love it, it performs very well for me. However, none of my games - all flight sims - exceed needing more that 3.5gb of vram, not even close. The GTX 980 is hard to beat, but couple hundred bucks more for a slight gain in performance, however it also does not have the vram limitation, it accesses all 4gb of vram together at the same speed.

I was eyeing the 2 GB model, but I'm not sure if I should just save and go for a higher end like the 970 and up. I was considering that jump as well but the prices here (Canada) definitely make me reconsider. The GTX 960 is $250ish whereas the GTX 970 is $400ish. The performance jump is there but not enough to justify the jump in price... it may be different where you are. Sometimes it suggests some over the top tweaks in the name of image quality but with a real sacrifice to frame rate.
Dakpilot Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 (edited) This is what I run in Nvidia inspector, works very well at 1600 x 900 but is a tiny bit too recourse hungry at my native 1920 X 1080 get rid of shimmering and has great image/AA quality 90% of the time it is fine and I am happy with it only a bit of fps drop when zoomed at low level when using native res It is this : 12xS [Combined: 2x2 SS + 4x OGMS (D3D only)] that gives me the best picture so far Cheers Dakpilot Edited March 27, 2015 by Dakpilot
