fdswer Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 I really don't think you read the kickstarter beyond the aircraft. It was supposed to be a stand alone dcs ww2 Europe 1944, an improvement on the existing dcs world. With improvements to multiplayer. Training and campaigns for each aircraft. An sdk for the backers. There was so much more in the kickstarter than the aircraft. All ED are giving us is the aircraft no training no tutorials, hence rushed, and a map sometime in the future. Which is not all that I pledged my money for. Maybe you can't see beyond the aircraft and map but gameplay is important to myself and others. If one cannot see other aircraft beyond 2km there is no gameplay no matter how well you model the aircraft. The ed forum moderators have pretty much said that spotting isn't going to change when EDGE is released. I quote "Dont expect any major changes with 2.0 at release. What we need to do is wait and see how the new graphics engine effect things, along with new maps, etc and go from there." the "product I funded" was much more than aircraft and a map. I really hope that has cleared up your confusion with my posting on this topic. If not feel free to pm me. Back on topic How does any of that mean the spotting isn't going to change DCS 2.0 is a hole new engine, they just don't comment on it on it probably because they are not aloud to say anything about the new game. You are really reaching with your logic and the spotting right now isn't really that bad I play WW2 online all the time and it is not unplayable.

Have you seen the mig 15 videos in EDGE? I don't see a whole lot of change in spotting. Probably why they don't comment on it. There are whole threads on ED forums regarding spotting or lack of. But hey, you go ahead and play I'm not stopping you. I won't be. I won't be buying any ww2 aircraft until it's fixed. But that's just me. I got burned with the kickstarter I'm not getting burnt by those guys again. Take it to a pm Edited March 24, 2015 by Rolling_Blunder
SharpeXB Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 (edited) What is "spotting" exactly? It's just a result of graphics quality. Shaders, contrast, antialiasing etc. so a better graphics engine is going to result in better spotting. I think the current DCS engine suffers a bit in all those categories. Plus it's demanding on the system so setting higher levels especially antialiasing is tough. EDGE is supposed to actually be less demanding. The other major factor for flight sims is resolution. The move up to 4K will probably improve things a lot but it's going to take substantial hardware. Look at the Titan X. That's where the future is going. I think the spotting challenges hit the modern air combat more than WWII. You're dealing with missiles and "visual range" combat is 10 miles. Edited March 24, 2015 by SharpeXB

The fact is no body outside of ED knows the answer.
9./JG27golani79 Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 (edited) If you wanna improve spotting in DCS I suggest to turn MSAA completely off - you can spot aircrafts way earlier that way. On the ACG server there is a modpack available which comes with adjusted LODs which also improves spotting. I´m flying the WWII birds on the ACG server when dogfighting and with MSAA off as well as the adjusted LODs spotting is pretty decent. Hoping for an improvement with the new engine though. The fact is no body outside of ED knows the answer. In this mission I'm flying without labels and don't have any trouble seeing my opponent. I do lose sight once and require him. On YouTube the video quality is not quite what I see on m screen so yes, it's harder to see the enemy in the video. IMO having AA turned off makes spotting much worse since whole pieces of the plane can flicker and disappear. Not just for spotting but also ID ing. You may see blobs or shapes but can't recognize them. Cliffs of Dover (non TF) has no AA and this makes the game just about impossible to use. Edited March 24, 2015 by SharpeXB

Yes, this happens on greater distance - but so you can already see them whereas with AA on you wouldn´t see them - if they come closer you wont have the flickering problem.

I find I can see another aircraft under good conditions at 10 miles with AA set to 8xqThe problem with turning off the AA is that the game just looks awful as well so even if it has some benefit it's not worth playing IMO. That's what made me quit CoD as nice as it otherwise looks I just can't stand the jaggies. Edited March 24, 2015 by SharpeXB
9./JG27golani79 Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 I´m running it on a 24" @ 1080 But then my display is pretty old and may not be the best - with AA on I am in serious trouble when it comes to spotting other aircraft. So I trade some of the good looks for better visibility on my side. If I´m flying on virtual aerobatics or other servers where I don´t do any dogfighting however I´m running it all turned up and with sweetFX. It´s just a compromise for me with which I can live for now I guess.
