Bearcat Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Anybody going to try this yet? It is a free upgrade if you have W 7, 8 or 8.1..
SYN_Mike77 Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 I really like windows 7 for my desktop. I'm going to wait until I'm given some reason to change. 1
johncage Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 dx 12 yields significant performance improvements even for dx 9-11 games that do not use any specific features of 12. but the fact that it's free makes me think there's a catch. maybe some always on-line crap or bloatware. best case scenario, microsoft realizes dx12 can only thrive in the game development environment if there's a market for it. and having a bunch of people stay on win 7, means devs might go for alternatives like vulkan or mantle.
Mastermariner Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 As soon as its confirmed that all drivers etc are supported I go. Master 1
SCG_Space_Ghost Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 I really like windows 7 for my desktop. I'm going to wait until I'm given some reason to change. Primary support for Windows 7 ended in January. Windows 7 will be at its end-of-lifecycle in 2020. 5 more years to hold out... I am with you there. dx 12 yields significant performance improvements even for dx 9-11 games that do not use any specific features of 12. but the fact that it's free makes me think there's a catch. maybe some always on-line crap or bloatware. best case scenario, microsoft realizes dx12 can only thrive in the game development environment if there's a market for it. and having a bunch of people stay on win 7, means devs might go for alternatives like vulkan or mantle. The development build for Windows 10 seemed like a step in the right direction. It retains some of the Metro styling but reintroduces an effective start menu... It retains pre-configured drivers... It does a lot of good things... I suggest you request a development build from Microsoft to test with - you may be surprised. I suspect the upgrade is free for Win7 users because they will (likely) be removing some of the codec support, Media Player, etc. from those users... I guess you could consider that a hitch but freeware like VLCPlayer has more to offer anyway.
6./ZG26_Emil Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 I really like windows 7 for my desktop. I'm going to wait until I'm given some reason to change. Yep can't see any reason to change. Windows 8 looks horrible so I am very wary of anything else they bring out unless they're taking a step backwards on some of their ideas. If it ain't broke.....

Windows 8 looks horrible so I am very wary of anything else they bring out unless they're taking a step backwards on some of their ideas. If it ain't broke..... There have been several versions of Windows that "weren't broke." That simply isn't how a software development lifecycle works...
yeikov Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 Incidentally, is anyone using the MS Sidewinder 2 with Windows 8 / 8.1 ? I am, it works the same as in w7. 1
Guest deleted@30725 Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 I've tried and played wt, bos and dcs on it and they all play the same. It comes with windows antivirus (formerly in security essentials) and I've 'never' had a virus using this software so no need for any 3rd party bloatware. It's a simple thing to add, but it's useful. I know they started doing this in win 8. I like it much over win 8.1 which on a desktop is trash. Their idea of a store is total stupid trash. I thought it was going to be a central repo where I could get vlc or chrome browser when announced for win 8, but in win 10 it's same trash store. I still have to go to potentially virus riddled websites to get software that might install malware and other viruses without my knowledge. Linux, Mac. This is one of my favourite features of these OS. I can 'sudo apt-get install everything' in one single command and let it run for however long it takes. If it crashes I re-run it and tell it to '--fix missing' and it sorts itself out. This idea of going to websites to get software is so archaic. Overall windows 10 feels like a good release. I'd happily move from win 7, but win 8 / 8.1 are garbage on desktops with it's stupid disjointed menu system that treats the desktop as its own app.
6./ZG26_Emil Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 There have been several versions of Windows that "weren't broke." That simply isn't how a software development lifecycle works... Correct and Windows 7 isn't broke. It does everything I need it to and I'm not going to change from it unless I can see some benefit. 1
-NW-ChiefRedCloud Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 As soon as I get my ne computer set up I will download Windows 10 to the old computer and let you know what happens. But if Rise of Flight get's a green light from Windows 8.1 I suppose BoS will too. Incidentally I still run Windows 7 as will my new computer. But according to the Windows 8.1 compatibility check, Rise of Flight and BoS work fine with it. Chief
Bearcat Posted March 24, 2015 Author Posted March 24, 2015 I will skip W8 entirely.. all my PCs have W7 on them and it works.. so I wont be changing a thing till W10 is released and from what i hear it will be likle a mix of W8 and W7 with it's own flavor..
9./JG27golani79 Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Correct and Windows 7 isn't broke. It does everything I need it to and I'm not going to change from it unless I can see some benefit. Yeah, and Windows 8 isn´t broken either nor does it look horrible - it works just fine. I agree though that there is no reason to upgrade if you are running on Windows 7 - I for myself only changed from 7 to 8 cause I got it via MS DreamSpark. But according to the Windows 8.1 compatibility check, Rise of Flight and BoS work fine with it. Chief I´m using Windows 8 since it´s release and so far every game I´ve tried was working.

I've been running Win 8.1 since its release and it's been working just fine for RoF and BoS and everything else I've tried with it. I had to install Win 8 when I built my latest PC and couldn't find my Win 7 disks, and all I could buy with my PC parts was Win 8. I liked Win 7 better in some respects but have been able to tweak/configure Win 8.1 so it mimics Win 7 and hides most if not all of the stupid Win 8 tiles/garbage stuff. I'm really tempted to swap out my C drive for a while and try out Win 10, just to see what it's like, but I really haven't looked into it yet - too much going on IRL ATM. 1
Dakpilot Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 On many modern games run on up to date hardware there were significant performance (FPS) advantages of Win 8 over Win 7 however I do not use win 8 and do not know if BoS would/did benefit from that...also hard to do relevant benchmarks with so many updates coming to BoS I guess Also thinking of having a go with Win 10 just for the fun, especially seeing as its free a tiny performance increase can help bring you above the ''minimum" that can spoil gameplay occasionally ..so little time for so many (minor) things LoL Cheers Dakpilot
Feathered_IV Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Recent news from Microsoft is that even users of pirated versions of W7 are eligible for the free upgrade to 10. Not sure what Admiral Ackbar would say about that though.
-NW-ChiefRedCloud Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Those that have windows 8 or 8.1 have you tried flying Cliffs of Dover yet? Just curious. Chief

Boomerang Posted July 4, 2015 Posted July 4, 2015 IL-2 on Windows 10? For those that haven't seen this yet, check it out:
Urra Posted July 4, 2015 Posted July 4, 2015 IL-2 on Windows 10? For those that haven't seen this yet, check it out: wow.
Beast_vmf114 Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 I don't have the full IL2 anymore, but, with Pacific Fighters, I can't run it on 10. Windows has some kind of roadblock on it. If anyone is using IL2 on windows 10, how did you get it to work??????? Even my FSX isn't working right.
Guest deleted@50488 Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Windows 10 runs better than any previous version all the sims I have tested so far, including: - Aerowinx PSX ( my main sim ) - DSC World now on v1.5 - Il2 BoS - Rise of Flight - FSS:SE - P3D v2.5 - X-Plane 10.42 - Condorsoaring I use the Professional 64 bit version, because I upgraded for free from Win 8 Pro 64 bit. Wouldn't go back to Win 7 for nothing, and win 8 isn't even an option....
Beast_vmf114 Posted October 14, 2015 Posted October 14, 2015 How are you getting them to run on 10????? PF won't run at all and FSX is super slow.
Feathered_IV Posted October 14, 2015 Posted October 14, 2015 Just installed W10 last night. So far so good. Startup time is significantly longer though and i'll need to find a way to disable the intrusive tablet-style display with the desert island that pops up at the start. BoS works fine so far. I'll have to give the old il-2 a go tonight.
Feathered_IV Posted October 14, 2015 Posted October 14, 2015 Just checked and Il-2FB/PF runs perfectly. Microsoft Edge sucks arse however...
SCG_Space_Ghost Posted October 14, 2015 Posted October 14, 2015 Just checked and Il-2FB/PF runs perfectly. Microsoft Edge sucks arse however... Edge is absolutely poor. It's the same old failure of an IE-backend with a not-so-spiffy Metro UI on top of it.
kestrel79 Posted October 14, 2015 Posted October 14, 2015 Good to know the main sims work. Think I'm going to hold out until the last possible moment, as I have lots of older Steam games I'm not sure work yet.
Beast_vmf114 Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 Okay, Feathered......what did you do to get PF to work????
Feathered_IV Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 I just double clicked the icon and it worked. I'm running a modded version of 4.13 with the SaS mod activator and various extras, plus a souped up version of 4.09 that I use for map making. Both of these worked without any sort of extra tweaking. If you can is suggest trying a clean install and go from there. If you are running mods it might be a problem there. Especially if ist a crash at 60% or 85% loading.
Wildbill Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 I up grated from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and I am not able to get my Nvidia 3D working in BOS. 3D works on Cliffs of Dover and ROF. I am still trying to work on the options to see what one's need to be turned on/off. WB
richard23 Posted October 26, 2018 Posted October 26, 2018 This maybe a stupid question (I have a masters in them) but....... Does the old DVD/ROM disc version of I-2 sturmovik load and run on Windows 10 and if not, can it be bought as a download similar to BoS and CoD, etc?
DD_Arthur Posted October 26, 2018 Posted October 26, 2018 It does with some coaxing......usually....... However, if you do get to the point where it just does not want to play ball it can be bought as a download through Steam for less than a tenner. Btw; have you seen this thread? 1

Thanks for that and the link......I'll go take a look.☺️
Blimpercrash Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 Compatibility mode and running the game on a single core might also help.

Maddhatter Posted November 8, 2018 Posted November 8, 2018 (edited) For up to date driver for windows 10 and others go to forums laptopvideo2go dot com. They make .inf modes so you can use older video cards with the new video drivers. I have been using there modes for years now and may one or two problems but that was my fault.
