Finkeren Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 (edited) I'm gonna catch a ton of flak from metal purists for this, but recently I've really started to enjoy Volbeat. I've tried to put them off for a long time, but it's just so damn catchy. I've been playing Outlaw Gentlemen And Shady Ladies on repeat while flying BoS recently, and I'm enjoying every second of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJ48WX9z90A There I said it. Rjel Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 How could anyone be a WWII era history buff and not love this song? 1 4
Finkeren Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 Glen Miller is great, but in the context of BoS it might be more fitting to play Alexandr Tsfasman. His music, while not as refined, is some of the wildest and most energetic swing to come out of the USSR in the 20s and 30s: 2
Rjel Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 Glen Miller is great, but in the context of BoS it might be more fitting to play Alexandr Tsfasman. His music, while not as refined, is some of the wildest and most energetic swing to come out of the USSR in the 20s and 30s: I enjoyed those Finkeren, especially the first and third songs. I'm not a student of music by any means but I think they'd have fit into almost any 1930s Hollywood big band musical. The middle one had more of a Jazz or even a little Ragtime sound to it, at least to me. Still good, just different. Thanks for posting those, I've never heard them before. 1
Finkeren Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 (edited) Yeah I was surprised to learn a couple of years ago, that the USSR had actually been front runners in big band jazz and swing in the Stalin era. I always had the impression, that mainstream culture turned quite regressive in the years leading up to the war, but apparently I was wrong, at least concerning music. Tsfasman is about as mainstream as you could get in the Soviet Union at the time. It's funny, because when media portray the USSR during the war, it's usually the more traditional folk songs a la "Katyusha" or older Russian classical pieces like "Farewell Slavianka" that are showcased. But in reality it would be more correct to have people dancing swing or foxtrot, and the Kossacks playing big band jazz rather than balalaika. Edited March 21, 2015 by Finkeren
707shap_Srbin Posted March 21, 2015 Author Posted March 21, 2015 (edited) Well, we here cant imagine wartime songs without: Leonid Utyosov - "Mishka The Sailor". Song is about a sailor from Odessa, who swear to return to his motherland and liberate it from nazis. Interestingly, song was introduced in 1942, and Odessa was freed in 1944. Legendary song: "Davay zakurim" (Lets smoke). The "must listen" for soviet infantrymen. Song is about liberation of Ukraine from nazists. 707shap_Srbin Posted March 21, 2015 Author Posted March 21, 2015 Mark Bernes, "Tiomnaya Noch" from film "Two soldiers", 1943: Lyrics in English: Dark in the night. Bullet’s whistling all over the steppe, Only wind’s humming up in the wires, Only stars dimly twinkle. Dark in the night, You, my darling, not sleep in your bed, And, when quietly cradling the crib, Wipe away secret tears. Love for your eyes! Their depth gently touches my heart. What I desire, Just to kiss them again so lightly. This very night, Separated us greatly, my Love! And this frightening black winter steppe has lain down between us. Still I believe, Trusting you, dear spouse of mine. In these dark nights, only this faith, Kept me safe from a bullet. Feeling of joy, Makes me calm in the deadliest battle, Knowing, you always meet me with love, No matter what happened. No fear of death, I have met it, not once in the steppe, It is spinning above me in air, Now and then, or elsewhere. Waiting for me, You are awake, staying by baby’s bed, And I know, forever and now, No wrong to me will happen.
HippyDruid Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 At the moment I'm listening to this, as well as the rest of the new album. Be warned, graphic stuff contained in the video. 1
II./JG27_Rich Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 I'm a Beach Boys fan,,Not a huge one but like many people the songs of theirs that I do like I really like! In the 80s I saw a short bit of film of Brian Wilson laying in bed being interviewed and I wondered what was wrong. Over the years there's been a bio pic here and there one by John Stamos wasn't bad but this one look's great and what a cast. I can hardly wait!!!

Finkeren Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 (edited) As for what I'm listening to now: I kinda think the lyrics are pretty shallow and unoriginal and the video flat out sucks, but Muse sure knows how to create a tune that sticks with you for days: Warning: Explicit lyrics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqLRqzTp6Rk Edited May 4, 2015 by Finkeren

Finkeren Posted June 2, 2015 Posted June 2, 2015 Ah yes, the GoT covers. It's an awesome tune to be sure. Honestly though, I think that one is a bit too close to the original to be really interesting. I prefer this one: Who wouldn't want to see GoT reimagined as a Sergio Leone-style western? 1 1
Blooddawn1942 Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 Didn´t knew. But that was pretty interesting.

Finkeren Posted July 3, 2015 Posted July 3, 2015 Just fell across this. Mixing Sabaton with the pretty decent action scenes from First Squad (which is otherwise a pretty horrible flick) is rather epic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABCtU6NB_xs
