VeryOldMan Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 No Icon at all. Icons (at least long range icons) destroy the game for me.
6S.Manu Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 (edited) I'll say IL-2 but I don't like them period. They make the sim look like a game and they also a an unrealistic advantage to boomer zoomers, P-47s 190 Ds It's still unrealistic without them: the BnZers are in disadvantage since the lower pilots see easily black dots above them, while for higher planes most of the time it's difficult to distinguish planes from the landscape even at short range. At least BOS probably will have ROF's reflections, so it will be easier to track planes over forest... but still a smart player will not be ambushed because he easily and suddenly sees black dots when he look above. The most realistic setting shoulds be Icon On but dynamically spottable (because of reflections, camouflage, ect...) and no dots at all. The difference between a sim and a game. Klien Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 S! Sirs; IL-2 are what I'm used to. 'Emy' @ 3klms, 'Typ @ 2 klms, 'Pilot' @ 400ms. Or something like that. Generaly a bit more Mk 1 Eyeball ranges.
royraiden Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 Req, it's not about identifying friendly from foe but about the ability to identify the friendly pilot('s name) flying next to you. Doesnt that defeat the purpose of a sim like this?I understand that you will probably wont be able to know exactly who is who by just looking but if you activate a sort of name tag you can identify which planes are friendlies and which ones arent. That to me could be used to "cheat" .I seriously think this should be on/ trough the server so each pilot cant turn them on unless everyone else can and are willing to.Identifying friend from foe is one of the hardest things for me, I dont want others to have an unfair advantage like this over me.
89- Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 (edited) What kind of meat do you like? I dont like meat, I'm vegetarian. This is how this thread develops Instead of reading meat eaters opinions, we are reading replies from a bunch of vegetarians. Edited February 16, 2013 by 89-
TJT Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 S! Sirs; IL-2 are what I'm used to. 'Emy' @ 3klms, 'Typ @ 2 klms, 'Pilot' @ 400ms. Or something like that. Generaly a bit more Mk 1 Eyeball ranges. Something along those lines for me too. No icons isnt more realistic per se (due to technical limitations of our computers) but rather just more difficult. 1
FlatSpinMan Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 Icons. Make them togglable for offliners and server-side for onliners. Personally I can't play IL2 without them. RoF's reflections and the smaller number of planes in the air make it easier to do without. I tend to play with icons off while flying to the target area and try to spot the enemy unaided or by following flak bursts etc. I'll toggle them on once a furball has begun so I don't chase a friendly for minutes on end. I find it very hard to tell them apart at a distance in IL2. Once I have found my target I'll usually switch them off again. None of that is realistic or hardcore, but then again, I'm just playing a flying game on my computer at home so why should it trouble anyone else?
Bearcat Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 I just hope that they don't show up through the plane model like they do in RoF.. I don't like that. I think the otion to hacve them in varied was from none to detailed is an absolute necessity.. but I do not think they should show up through objects like clouds and wings..
VBF-12_Gosling-71 Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 Im not keen on Icons in vision. I like the idea of map icons but mainly planning ones like you have drawn your own mission plan before departure. I am not averse to Radar icons on a map but prefer slow updates so you only get an idea of where the enemy are - not accurate positions and directions.
philiped Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 I generally fly with icons on for my own side, but leave them off for the enemy A/C. This way you can spot friend from foe in a fur-ball, but still require the old eyeball for spotting enemy A/C, I like how the icons in RoF are done, with enemy aircraft just having a dot above them at a distance. Since it is easier to spot and keep track of aircraft in real life, I would like to see a system like this (hopefully customizeable) introduced into BoS.
1CrazyJoe Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 I vote for no icons......takes more skills than just flying a plane.
Lord_Haw-Haw Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 No icons, please, as icons make the skill of aircraft recognition unneccesary
gavagai Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 You all are missing the point of the question. It's not about whether or not you like icons. He's asking what style of icon the developer should include for people who do. It's an important training tool for people who are brand new to combat flight sims.
Laser Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Either that (everybody, except gavagai, is missing the point) or the OP message and the poll is not clear, because the OP wanted to have icons and he forgot to add "the no icons" poll option, which was promptly sanctioned in the replies. It doesn't even matter what the OP intention was, what matters is that his message can be interpreted in more than one way, which is demonstrated by the replies, and not viceversa (everybody is wrong, and there is only one correct way to read it).
Mirtma Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 I like icons at the beginning, when I'm getting used to simm. Then I turn them off.
Matt Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 I like RoF style icons, but even with icons off I would like to see a friendly plane pilot's name when I get really close to him (say to one wingspan). That would be a very good solution imho. Distance could be greater though (say 50-100 meters or so). Actually, i would prefer it, if you would need to look at the friendly plane and press/hold a button to let the pilots name show up. Then let go of the button and it would disappear again.
gavagai Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 Either that (everybody, except gavagai, is missing the point) or the OP message and the poll is not clear, because the OP wanted to have icons and he forgot to add "the no icons" poll option, which was promptly sanctioned in the replies. leitmotiv Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 (edited) The poll looks ok, you cant make a game with no icons, you have to have the option in game to turn them on or off I play last few years almost only FR no icons , but when i started to play i played with icons on to some degrees, so they are essential for beginners I like IL2 style compared to RoF P.S if i remember correctly in IL2 with editing rcu and conf.ini you could edit the icons the way you wish (distances when name apeers, color, distance numbers, frend icons only shows and so on) Edited August 5, 2013 by Yaklover
VoodooGT Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 I like flying most times without icons being on. Having said that I also enjoy having them on now and then. I don't believe you are going to see the icons as they are in iL2 1946.
=LD=Hethwill Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 No Icons at all, or if any a non FoF ID dot.
=LD=Stache Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 I'd like the icons to be as small and unobstrusive as possible (i'm not saying NO icons ,just have a look at WT FRB and you can see that this is not working) ,anyways i'd have say no to big in your face icons, there should some element of suprise left, testing the pilots SA .
Sokol1 Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 I like RoF style icons, but even with icons off I would like to see a friendly plane pilot's name when I get really close to him (say to one wingspan). In il-2 1946/CloD it's possible, adjusting mp_dotrantge file for the desired distance - in the case use 20 meters (0.02). Sokol1
Yellowsub Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 No icons is not a option! The option is icons on or off (depending on your singleplayer setting or server setting) I don't really care if they use the IL2 or RoF style but for singleplayer I want them to be adjustable in color, distance and maybe scale. Also an option "visible trough objects on/off" would be kinda like an IL2/ROF toogle)
Tektolnes Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 While I would never spend much time on a server that had icons on my preference for icons would be something unobtrusive. Probably something best left moddable by users to fit their tastes. Also think they should at least be limited to the visible sky from the cockpit - shouldn't see them through the cockpit floor.
--loner--Dovla Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 small icon for friendlies < 1km, no icon for everything else
VA_NAVY Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 No Icons, it starts noobs off properly. Just like in real life hunting, identify your target. Everyone should also know enemy planes characteristics. This is how Aces are made.
