ShamrockOneFive Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Every other FW190 skin and every profile I've ever seen for whiter or summer FW190s has the upper wing markings but on the FW190 White (aka Winter) skin I don't see them. Is this historical? Genuinely curious.
Feathered_IV Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I think the person who created the skin simply forgot. With the exception of some tippy-go 190's I've certainly never seen any evidence of crosses being removed enough to warrant making it a default skin. 2
Cybermat47 Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I find it really annoying, but it's nothing major.
Finkeren Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I think it's pretty obvious, that they simply forgot to put them there. After all, most VVS aircraft didn't carry national markings on the top of their wings, so it makes sense how you could forget it. They'll likely get around to fixing it at some point, but it's propably pretty far down their to-do list.

I,m not certain on this but the Guard squadrons had upper wing stars....and only after they got a kill? I am not certain of this??? Anyone clarify? Edited March 9, 2015 by voncrapenhauser
Feathered_IV Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Not sure about that. I always wondered (and been slightly disappointed) why most Soviet aircraft didn't have stars on the upper wings.
216th_Peterla Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 In the FW190 winter skin there is also missing the fake Swastika(you can barely see the white one). I reported it long ago but it's just a cosmetic feature, maybe lost in the "to do things" list. As per the soviet aircrafts I'm currently doing IL2 skins(check the skin thread forum for a couple of them ) and when doing a Guard squadron skin(No41) I noticed the absence of recognition stars on the upper wings. I'm working with reliable information of sovietwarplanes.com and none of the skins I completed had any star on top of the wings, only on the bottom, tail boom and tail fin. I don't know if is only a feature for the IL2 or for the entire Soviet air force. Could be anyways to not disrupt the camo when the aircraft is on the ground. Regards,

It was unusual to me and I wondered if it was a historical consideration or an oversight. I,m not certain on this but the Guard squadrons had upper wing stars....and only after they got a kill? I am not certain of this??? Anyone clarify? Nope. VVS aircraft did not have upper wing markings. I've read and heard repeated several times that because the VVS was considered a tactical airforce flying at low levels they deemed the upper wing markings something that spoiled the camouflage and elected not to use them. I'm not sure if the official reasoning is for this reason or if its another.
Finkeren Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 (edited) I've heard (but this is strictly anecdotal, so don't take my word for it) that the reason behind the lack of upper wing markings was, that the VVS tactical doctrine discouraged attacking other aircraft at your own initiative. The general rule was to always stick to your mission no matter what. Therefore there was fairly little need to be able to identify aircraft when viewed from above and therefore little need to break up camouflage with a pair of bright red stars. On the other hand, because most VVS missions took place at lower altitude it was deemed quite important to be able to ID aircraft from the ground to avoid AAA friendly fire. This was especially important because Soviet AAA batteries were generally less coordinated and actually did fire on their own initiative IIRC. Therefore the red stars on the underside of the wings are often quite large and easy to spot. The extreme example is Galchenkos LaGG-3 of which we have a version in BoS (the one with the white cat on the tail fin) that had no national markings at all except the stars below the wings. 1CGS LukeFF Posted March 19, 2015 1CGS Posted March 19, 2015 By the way, there seems to be upper wing crosses now in winter skin. Good to hear! I reported that during 1.010 testing, so I'm glad to see that got fixed. 1
6./ZG26_Custard Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 By the way, there seems to be upper wing crosses now in winter skin. It's good to see that this has been addressed (thanks Dev's) but I also see that the in-game axis symbol has been added too. Without going into detail that has already been discussed in other parts of the forum, I would rather have the tail plane blank if we can't have historical markings in the campaign mode.

1CGS LukeFF Posted March 22, 2015 1CGS Posted March 22, 2015 I finally got a chance to see the updated default winter 190 skin, and I must say it does look a lot better now.
