What Kind Of Performance Are You Getting?

Ever since buying this game I've experienced only bad performance on my PC. You can see my setup in the signature. I'd say that I have a very good computer, but even on average settings it's hard to get consistent performance (at least 50 FPS).

I shot this video to illustrate the issue. I used Fraps only to display the frame rate. The recording is of my computer monitor, so the recording process itself has no impact on performance.

What kinds of frame rates are people getting with similar setups? Is it normal for the FPS to drop below 40 or 30 when there's something going on? Is smooth performance too much to ask on my PC?

Every other game on my computer works just fine. I play games that are heavy on the CPU and GPU (Battlefield 4, Planetside 2) and they don't struggle like BoS.

I've reinstalled Windows, disabled antivirus, switched to a high end graphics card, gotten a new power supply etc etc. Maybe the game just hogs more resources than are needed?

I have i7 3770k and two gtx680.

Run it on ultra with great framerate. Only bug I get is a weird line coming up to the underside of clouds.

First what comes to my mind is that you play on a server with icons. Do you get those FPS drops also on expert servers?

Then there is OpenTrack 2.2 in your signature. I used to have performance problems with OpenTrack till maybe 2.3RC8. It seemed there was some interference between BOS and OpenTrack. I didn't give it much time to investigave but later versions cured the problem. Current version 2.3RC9 works pretty well and doesn't have such performance issues.

Strange i got I5 2500K@4.5 Ghz, Gtx 670 OC, 8 GB Ram and similar performacne but without such huge fps drop?   My fps are average 40-60 fps depend of situatuion.  Settings Ultra, AAx4.

I think BOS the same like ROF like CPU power which is more important then graphic card.  So more Ghz you got it is better.

We have pretty similar hardware VeganMobster and I get 40-60 fps in SP campaign. Mostly fps remains around 60, ground attack missions with lots of units and planes briefly drops fps to 40 at lowest. But they are very playable still.

I dont play online so dont know about that.

Like 303_Kwiatek said, BoS is very CPU demanding so you might consider to overclock your processor. I run my 4670k@4.2 Ghz and difference to stock clocks in BoS performance is notable.

Disabling the icons gives a few extra frames per second in situations where there are lots of planes around. In other scenarios there's no difference. On expert servers I usually get better FPS, but that's mainly because there are fewer big dogfights.

I installed Opentrack 2.3RC9. It is working, but the performance in game is still choppy. When I'm close to other planes, and sometimes when looking at the ground, I get around 40 FPS on balanced settings. Smoke seems to be particularly bad: FPS takes a huge hit when smoke is either on the ground or coming from a plane that I see.

It sucks to play this game now, although as a flight sim it seems to be up there with the best.

If there was an option to get my money back, I would :) I feel pretty bad for spending dough on this game, because I had no idea that these technical issues would occur.

There is a patch coming next week with online performance fixes. So maybe it will improve your situtation.

I have a below average machine with an i7 870 (3.2 ghz), GTX670, 8 GB Ram on Win 7 64 bit.

I have the graphics set to Ultra, and the FPS never drops to below 40.

The game is always smooth as silk (I never experience any dips, or the 'micro stutters' that some say they experience online or offline) and it looks absolutely gorgeous.

You have a better graphic card than mine, but our CPU's are similar in performance (http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/460/Intel_Core_i5_i5-4670K_vs_Intel_Core_i7_i7-870.html). Although mine is a very early i7, i5 are not particularly suitable for gaming in my opinion. And given that IL2 BoS is CPU intensive, ~40 FPS you're getting sounds about right IMO.

Personally, I am very comfortable with steady ~40 FPS. That's about the same I'm getting with DCS at moderate to high settings, and with Arma 3 everything on Ultra and visibility set to 3500 m. So I wouldn't say that IL2 BoS has "technical issues" on the graphics performance front.

EDIT: Also, OpenTrack may be the culprit for your performance issues. Try running the game without it and see how it compares.

Curious... do you play the single player campaign at all and have you had more than say a dozen aircraft going around at once? I have the same CPU, more RAM, and the GTX 570 and when that happens the game bogs down into single digits. It's generally stuttery on a regular basis these days.

S!

On Multiplayer Servers that are empty  I get  about 50-60 FPS on the ground. After about 1000m altitude I normally get more 70 FPS. If the Server is full (30 ore more people) I'm down to 40 FPS on the ground and often can't get constant 60 FPS at altitudes below 2000m.

For Singleplayer FPS rates look here: http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/14201-some-fps-tests-second-try/?do=findComment&comment=224095

Setup is in my signature.

All in all my GPUs seldom  see usages above 50% (each). So I assume that my CPU is the bottleneck, especially at low altitudes, where my GPU usage is at about 30% (each). I already tried different settings in Nvidia Control Panel and Nvidia Instructor ... without success.

Yes I do play the single player campaign, and I am about to finish the first chapter. I usually fly ground attack missions in IL2 and frequently run into enemy fighters. Not dozens of them, perhaps 5-6 enemies, and about that many Soviet fighters (I'm guessing since I don't have external views), plus my wing of 4 IL2s. I frequently fly quick missions 3 vs 3 for shooting practice.  I began flying online recently, and online performance is the same, if not better. The other day on DED, there were around 30 aircraft in total, and I had no slowdowns, no stutters etc. Graphic settings are at ultra + 4AA. I also have all LOD values set to 4096 in the terrain ini file for better quality of far graphics. Also, my sound samples are set to 128, instead of 32. In other words, all my settings are maxed out, and in every scenario, I get rock solid FPS, never falling below 40.

This is my experience with the game, and I'm loving it :)

Do you minimize OT to taskbar before switching to BOS? I noticed it consumes some CPU if it runs as an open window.

I have very similar specs to you also and have no problems set on ultra,aax4?

The tearing between cloud and horizon I get on occasion, but very slight.

I've been on this forum bitching about performance issues several times. But now it seems that things have changed. There is a clear difference in how the game runs now and how it runs on the video. My frame rate is a relatively steady 60 on Ultra most of the time. In multiplayer dogfight the figure is lower, but remains playable.

Since I didn't make any changes to my hardware after I shot the video, I'm assuming that a game patch did this. Thanks for improving the game experience. I already stopped playing BOS, but now I'm gonna give this thing another shot!
