1CGS LukeFF Posted March 9, 2015 1CGS Posted March 9, 2015 Except 1C made historical medals for the original IL-2. Exactly
BlitzPig_EL Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Actually Maddox Games did, and just a few years ago, most of you would have said UBI did it. But that was 14 years ago, and as was mentioned, a lot has changed in Russia since then. Are there not more important fish to fry than this trivial subject? Honestly, you guys would argue about the tread pattern on one of the virtual trucks in this sim.
unreasonable Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I fully appreciate that images of the original medals would be better for some people from the point of immersion. However, that doesn't change the fact that in doing so, we cheapen the the significance of the real thing. [bold added by unreasonable] No, we really don't. When we shoot down another aircraft in a flight sim are we cheapening the significance of the actual human cost of war? Our virtual aircraft wear national markings (except for you know what): should we cover them up so as not to cheapen the contribution of those who fought in them? If you play any sort of military themed wargame or FPS your avatar will wear a uniform: should these be banned too on the grounds that some veterans will be upset? More likely some people eager to be caused offense on behalf of a third party. Claiming that some things are "sacred" as a way to justify stopping other people portraying elements of history is dangerous, as we see in RL today. Who is to say where the boundary lies? Or should everyone have a veto? I would say that it beggars belief that otherwise sensible people who enjoy a game that involves virtual killing should get so moralistic about some virtual medals. 2
BlitzPig_EL Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 And I think it beggars belief that grown men fret over this. And people wonder why the genre is slowly dying.
Urra Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 (edited) Wulf, you do miss the point. I'm answering some guy with Jim Belushi as his avatar about whether this is a bunch of silly shit or not, or something more respectful. You also miss the point that I do understand some of this logic about honoring the real men and women who fought in this conflict. I also said I understand why the dev's chose not to use the realistic medals and that I really don't have a problem with that. Now whatever you want to do with the digital flag of my country is entirely up to you and the rules of this forum.... Now listen...I've made my point on this.....I thought the one sentence blow off on the medals was uncalled for and a little condescending...that's all I'm going to say about it. I'm not going to go back and forth with the logic which will never convince certain people. If we were at a coffee house, we'd laugh and just disagree, most likely in a friendly way and let that be that. I doubt that anyone would seriously say things about smelling the flowers and about reflecting on our lives twenty years from now..It would just be guys sharing some views on our hobby of sorts and nothing more. La cuenta por favor. I know one thing - There should be a medal for us on the DD list for dealing with the graphics presets. And yes, proper tread pattern on the trucks would be a big plus. BraveSirRobin Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Is it so hard to understand? Yes. Impossible for me to understand, actually. Whining about imaginary fake medals is so ridiculous that I have trouble comprehending adults doing that sort of thing. 1

I struggle to see the point of an 'adult whining about other people's preferences...now that is ridiculous. Cheers!

Honestly, you guys would argue about the tread pattern on one of the virtual trucks in this sim. If 1CGS cannot portray medals in this game because of vague political pressure or a specific local law I think we should be told. We understand the swastika restrictions: but are there similar laws restricting the depiction of Soviet medals? As you say a lot has changed in Russia: trying to avoid the political insta-ban topic, it is a concern of mine that should the current Russian state decide that WW2 games were a useful way to mobilize domestic youth opinion against the "fascistic" enemy to the west, we can kiss goodbye to historic realism in any shape. I do not believe that this is the case, to me it looks like the awards went out along with historic units etc as a game design issue focusing on unlocks, but if I am wrong I really would like to know as I have no interest in buying propaganda, even if it is packaged as a flight sim. I understand why you think that this topic seems unimportant: in one sense it is unimportant in the game compared to getting core game elements working and enjoyable: but in another sense it is far more important. Think of the issue as a canary in a coal mine. "Just because you do not take an interest in politics doesn't mean politics won't take an interest in you", as some old Greek guy once said.
6./ZG26_Emil Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I would find it virtually impossible to believe politics has anything to do with this. In my opinion this is a deliberate move to game up the sim to appeal to a different market...I could be wrong though
Valok Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 (edited) I, personally, don't care about the "medals". Having said that I did not liked the commentary. Business 101: You don't patronise your customers (in public). Especially when your main livelyhood revolves around creating stuff where smashing buttons make pixels change colors. No one here is trying to be a Hero, we just like flying. Edited March 9, 2015 by Valok 2

SharpeXB Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 (edited) I like the historical medals in RoF. They make the sim feel genuine and they're very nicely researched and depicted. To be honest, cartoon medals besmirch history more than nice representation of the real thing. It serves as a bit of a history lesson for the players. I don't mind gamey "achievements" either. The "medals" in BoS are nicely artistic but they are in some cases so close to the originals in appearance they get confused with them. Which is more artificial? A fake medal that looks real or a real one that looks fake? And I think the overwhelming majority of sim players do not confuse their gameplay exploits with reality. It's just nice to see realistic representations in a "sim" that's supposed to be grounded in reality. Edited March 9, 2015 by SharpeXB

FlatSpinMan Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Well, the topic has been aired. Is it absolutely necessary to insult people (Devs, people against the medals, people for the medals, etc)?
