II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 Do the rear gunners ever die in this sim? It's almost as bad as the A-20 gunners in the original. At least they are not super snipers like those guys were. How much armor do these guys have in reality? I do a pretty good job of avoiding most of them but seeing those muzzle flashes coming back at you after pounding a Pe-2 with four 20mm guns seems a little on the optimistic side for those little AI bastards.
Y-29.Silky Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 (edited) The player gunners die all the time (not sure about the AI). I'm not sure if it's possible, but I recall one time where we thought he died from the blast of the satan bomb I dropped.Otherwise, no bomber, not even the B-17 had very much armor for their gunners. All the armor was dedicated to keep the aircraft flying. Edited March 5, 2015 by Silky
SharpeXB Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 You can kill em in RoF My rear gunners have the life expectancy of Darth Vader's starship captains...

Rear gunner tends to = Himmelfahrtskommando.
Wulf Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 Typically, the pilot would have armour incorporated into his seat but most of the aircrew had very little and in many instances no protection at all. Some armour plate was usually incorporated into power operated turrets but it was minimal at best and certainly didn't provide anything like comprehensive protection. What's more, such armour as may have been provided was only intended to stop or slow rifle cal. projectiles and flak splinters - it wouldn't, in normal circumstances, have any chance of stopping a cannon round.
SharpeXB Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Cool... This isn't the Rise of Flight forums and I am certain Herr Murf wasn't referring to ROF. You know it's the same game engine, right? 1
Feathered_IV Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 The core game engine does not contain the settings for gunner vulnerability. Those are in the individual files for each aircraft. Comparisons to RoF are not relevant in this particular case.
Finkeren Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Recently I've flown quite a few intercept missions in career to test the new DM for bombers. I gotta say that while AI gunners are not completely nerfed, their new spread setting make them a lot less deadly (which I think is a shame) and they can definately die. My favourite tactic when attacking Pe-2s is to come in high at 12 o'clock and go directly for the cockpit. Often the pilot will survive, but the gunner won't, leaving me free to attack from above.
wellenbrecher Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Same experience as Finkeren, with the current patches they're a lot less annoying than they used to be. In fact the number one killer for me in SP is now AAA again and not rear gunners sniping me from 800m while I go perpendicular to their plane Pe-2 at 600 kph. Interestingly, I never once at any point ever since MP became available had a problem with gunners in MP. I dunno if it's the netcode and the ever-present, no-matter-how-small lag throwing them off or if it's a different setting for gunners on human planes entirely, but they're completely useless there. IIRC I got hit and damaged by them... once, flying a Lagg3 on a 111's six - controlled by a friend of mine, for the record, not in regular combat - for close to a minute.
=EXPEND=Tripwire Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 (edited) On the DED-Normal servers there is one mission that usually has a number of Pe2 bombers take flight to eliminate some airfields. They quite regularly take out defending German fighters with their rear gunners whilst raiding the empty airfields, and have plane kills that usually exceed counts of most of the other Russian pilots on at the time. They rarely get home, but take a few with them. Edited March 6, 2015 by Tripwire
wellenbrecher Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Well, that reinforces my point quite nicely then, doesn't it? I really do wonder what the AI does differently or if there are other parameters at work.

SKG51_robtek Posted June 2, 2015 Posted June 2, 2015 With this field-mod gunner installation in the IL-2, most of the time the pilots brought back dead or wounded gunners.
1CGS LukeFF Posted June 2, 2015 1CGS Posted June 2, 2015 With this field-mod gunner installation in the IL-2, most of the time the pilots brought back dead or wounded gunners. That's been shown to not really be true. Most of the time the pilot and gunner went down together with the plane.
-Roy-Cheesy-Chops Posted June 3, 2015 Posted June 3, 2015 i try telling the rear gunners the same orders over and over. but im still only half way threw the second chapter so no axis fighters attacking my pe-2 yet so can only comment a little.i use a saiteck throttle quad and each button on the bottom i use for rear gunner orders far fire, medium fire, close fire, ground fire, cease fire..i can only hope the AI gunners can understand my orders and aim correctly but from my expeareince of computer games then the AI will prob be a let down.so i dish out orders all the time and repeat them every once and a while worth a shot i think
