Please Give The Ai Some Love

Recommended Posts

I’m a 100 percent SP player due to my lack of free time.  I love the game and in terms of graphics, planes and features I am VERY impressed.  Best flight sim ever!

But … and there is always a but, I wish the team could spend a little more time working on the AI.  It is very predictive, repetitive, somewhat boring and never really feels like you are fighting something other than a Bot.  It's a real immersion killer for me ... much more so than FM's, DM's and flat, white landscape.  Other games have been able to pull this off more effectively IMHO including BOB and even IL2-1946.  Anyone else agree?  Laying head on chopping block and waiting for the kiss of the ax.

Yep it seems the AI in some cases is very effective (air combat is decent) but ground attack they are downright useless. I've usually finished off the entire target and some secondary targets of opportunity before they have even set themselves up for the attack run. That part is not good yet at all. Hopefully we'll see it improve over time as SP is my preferred area right now too.

Speaking of ground attack I see a high percentage of friendly AI fighters colliding with the ground on destroy artillery missions. I look forward to that getting 'fixed'. Otherwise I haven't paid too much attention to the AI. I'm not looking for a challenge in my gaming so it seems pretty functional.

I hope they would make the fighter AI adapt more of their planes advantages, The FW-190 AI is absolutely useless as it only turnfights with its enemies. Only planes I've seen the AI play efficiently are ones with turning capabilities as it is the only thing the computer knows.

Stuka don't even engage ground targets or they just dive into the ground .

AI in general is okay. Biggest problem is that they identify friend from foe way too early in a head on attack. Human is always too late.

I have been flying campaign a lot recently and there clearly still are problems mentioned here. And in reports that I made to the technical discussion AI bug thread during past week.

AI has improved a lot with patches and I believe it will continue to develop better. AI has its good moments in campaign, I like especially that it use same FM as human player. I think it has potential to be really good one.

Have been waiting to do the Stuka campaign for months hoping this would be fixed. (the "fix" of do like me command does not work at least half the time)

I've been doing the campaign again here and there to unlock skins, and I hear what you're saying! It's more than just the AI, however.

We've got The Eagle's Nest back up and operational now, and AbortedMan is hard at work refining the mission parameters (http://www.thewetbandits.org/twb/?page_id=2) and a lot of this is specifically related to how the AI behave.

I know this isn't going to fix your SP problem, but if you aren't adverse to trying out more of a hybrid SP/MP environment, you've got nothing to lose by giving it a shot.

Right now there are several waves of AI tanks that attack fields (Rynok, and Grishin, in the north and south respectively) as well as periodic HE-111 raids that come into Shkolniy from the north.  Tip of the iceberg right now.

As far as diving into MP itself... well... I promise you that the first time you hit another player's plane, and see the unmistakable effects of your damage on their ability to maintain controlled flight... it takes a lot of the shine off hammering down on a AI plane and watching it continue along like nothing is amiss unless you pop a wing.

There seems to be AI fixes in 1.010 patch next week, as Zak said "AI behavior improvements, on Bf 109 and Fw 190 in particular".

So AI is getting the attention it deserves from developers :)

They need a "whole lotta love" I was peppering a LaGG-3 at 5000m meters the other day and suddenly his navigation lights came on and he dropped his landing gear, and then preceded to head straight down for a landing! :o:

MOAN ....!!!

We have a unlock system which i hate..!!!  to be honest ,  but yet we are forced to fly the awful campaign in single player boring , yet the the AI don't perform as expected and giving commands they do nothing , and AI on  landings don't work out right  either crash and burn on runway , so your unlock point equals zero . mmmmmmmmmmmm ..!!!! yet we have a unlock system in place that don't work with AI . its an conspiracy.

moan over . !!!

will come back when a fix is in place . but thanks for all your hard work 777.

Good bye for now .

AI is currently not able to do ground attack in some planes.

My major bugbear is ground attack wingmen ai. Looks like coming patch may give us a workaround on bombers not bombing. But ground attackers not attacking is a key issue esp for mission building.

They rarely do attack and if they do, they rarely use all bombs, rockets and ammo.

This is a 'must fix'.

I watched my Stukas the other day actually attack a tank position....It was neat to see it in action....But one thing I notice...and I'm not sure if it's my missions, but my AI men seem to rarely come back to base.  Most are killed....It's like they don't know when to break off from combat, and I've made their experience level equal or a little above the enemy....to check results as well....

You can change how long they hang around the target in the mission apparently.

What I don't like is that any time you try to shoot down bombers the AI gunner get's you almost EVERY time . Also the ground fire is waaay too accurate .

Roger......I'll have to check that setting.....but if the shortest duration is 20 min....it looks like they are toast.  I'm at office and don't have access to builder.

The biggest AI problem I've noticed in my missions build in the FMB is that the AI will crash in almost 50% of all landings or while taxiing on the runway after landing.

The low level ground attack missions I've build worked and the AI attacked their targets, the only problem I've noticed is that the AI planes need a lot of time to set up their attacks. If a mission builder doesn't give the attack command enough time, the AI planes will abort their attack before all bombs are dropped. What needs fixing is the AI's attack pattern. At the moment they fly too far away from the target area before they start their next approach. The result is, that it takes ages before all bombs are dropped.

I'd like to see a couple of things adjusted with the AI:

1) AI pilots who fly their planes "realistically" to their strengths, so Bf109/Fw190/Bomber pilots do something other than try to turnfight.  Different (appropriate) behaviours, tactics and maneuvers depending on what they are flying.

2) Realistic detection of enemy planes.  At the moment AI appears to automatically detect player/enemy AI as soon as they come within a certain range.  I'd love to see them have realistic blind spots and detection range, modified by cloud and direction of the sun.  You should at least have the potential to ambush AI pilots if you set up your attack correctly.

3) Better wingmen who actually do as they are told (i.e. not trying to shoot down bombers when they've been told to "cover me" and I've got enemy fighters escorts all over me, or rushing off to attack random enemies when they're supposed to be covering my bomber formation).

+1, to all of this. It's kind of an immersion killer to randomly have your AI wingmen shout out the position of the enemy and you can't make them out even with icons on...

To be fair, it took '46 quite a while to have its AI straightened out and even then...I still find the 4.12.2 AI doing things that really irritate me such as their perfect flying. On a plus side, it's nice how the BoS AI still makes some mistakes...though I wonder if that was intentional, haha.

That's long been my hope too. I'd love to see the AI made specifically for a given airplane. Buy a new airplane and its AI component. I don't profess to know the difficulties in programming a game to handle AI this way, but wouldn't it be nice to buy a Zero for example and get an AI based on how a Japanese pilot would fly it?
