Is this way as open source a hope for us all? I haven't delved into the world of VR just yet but I wonder for those who have what they think of it regarding pro's or con's etc.?
SR-F_Winger Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 this could also be a true alternative. The hope that BOS will be seing VR grows. http://www.roadtovr.com/steam-vr-controllers-pictured-appear-to-use-similar-tracking-to-headset/
Scott_Steiner Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 Yeah, the Vive is made by valve and HTC, that will most likely be the one to get... Not that I care about VR at all anyways. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2015/03/05/vive-gdc-review/ Sorry to say, those that bought a beta of the Oculus Rift and are now throwing complaints towards the IL-2 BOS developers that it's their fault for not working with them or upgrading past DX9... You've done it wrong.
VRnoorbeast Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 I consider there are some ongoing VR misconceptions, at different extremes. On the one hand there are constant comments that even current VR technology is not good enough, particularly around resolution, on the other is that unoptimised obsolete rendering like DX9 can cut it for high end VR. DX9 was made for XP, DX12 is in the pipline. Windows itself does not use DX9 for core graphics and for good reason, its evolution of both hardware and software. If you are interested in gaining and insight into what something like 4K VR rendering is actually going to take to achieve then have a look at current discussions: http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/2y4gsh/help_me_understand_4k_resolution_problem/ Can you run a DX9 game on a VR head mounted display, yes you can. Can you run DX9 and match what is possible with current VR top end hardware/software/graphics, let alone what is under development in HMDs, graphics cards and optomised rendering, no you can't. It does not matter if the HMD is OSVR, the Rift or the Vive.

JG27_Chivas Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Nobody knows which VR company will emerge the winner in the market yet. Oculus and Valve have worked very closely in the past and have each shown hardware with the most advanced features. That said Sony's project is also getting good reviews, but it still appears to be used only with a PS4. I don't really care which hardware company makes the best VR hardware, we will benefit from the intense competition, and billions thrown at this new Tech. I don't blame BOS for taking a step back to see what the future holds. Right now it appears that DX9 won't be good enough for the best VR experience, and DX12 looks like it might provide the best experience. It will be interesting to see if DCS, has made some provisions while working with Oculus, to accommodate their new DX11 EDGE graphic engine with some DX12 features.
