Anyway, last night I was flying on the Stalingrad map - got a little slow as you do from time to time, and found 3 or 4 Soviets right up my jacksie - I mean I could have spat at them. Anyway, so I was rolling like crazy going this way and that trying to lose these [Edited], and doing pretty well I might add, (although I was all shot up and smoking and shit) when this guy calls out over the 'Tanoy' - "Wulf, don't turn in the 190". Anyway, as you mention, energy retention is better. You can actually fight one-on-one in the 190 now, which you couldn't really do before. The Soviet machines still have the ability to climb after you and 'hang on their props' (especially the Yak) but compared with the old version, which had the flying qualities of a pregnant 'hippo', the 190 is certainly somewhat better now.

It's interesting how people tend to go on about Hitler's poor military judgement (and there were certainly a number of decisions, particularly in the final year nor so of the War that really did 'defy gravity'). However, unlike a lot of his detractors (including his Generals) he really did understand that , despite the accepted wisdom, Soviet manpower was not inexhaustible - particularly the way Soviet commanders tended to employ it. When the Germans stood and fought, they invariably inflicted huge losses on the Soviets. Just sayin ..........

I predict this thread is gonna turn into a pointless FM debate in 3... 2... 1... It just may.. but since it started out as a pointless loading screen beef... what has happened to this thread! I think you'll find the Soviets lost more men and equipment , as one would expect - they were the attacking force after all. [Edited] And frankly, I had to read your second paragraph twice to try and work out if you were talking about the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union or the Soviet invasion of Poland or Finland or the Baltic states. In practical terms, there is very little to separate the actions of those two totalitarian regimes. They were both a disaster. Totalitarianism is totalitarianism whatever the form. It's always bad. The thing is that the soviet commanders could rationaly afford the losses and win, on the other hand (and for many different reasons) there was no way for Germany to win against that. What is the point in inflicting huge losses if you still lose and if the enemy can afford it? By inflicting huge losses to a side that can afford it you do nothing usefull strategically. It is better and more usefull to surrender and thus spare your civilian population? Wars are not about "world records", they are not olympic games lol: it's about defeating the enemy at all costs: at this Germany lost and saw total failure and defeat. Nazi Germany was bested ™ by Soviet Union and other Allies, simple.

All those brave, heroic, patriotic young Germans in their lovely smart uniforms and uber planes and tanks set out not only to conquer eastern europe and the Soviet Union but also to commit a huge genocide upon those populations. They did it with their eyes wide open too. Everywhere the Germans went in the east this is what they set out to do. All German forces can be implicated in crimes against humanity in the east. Theres no getting away from this. Incidentally, before we go down the "they were only acting under orders/would have been shot if they refused" argument; there are a few recorded incidents of individuals refusing to take part in massacres and senior officers protesting to Berlin about what was going on. There are no records of any disciplinary action being taken against German soldiers refusing to take part in these actions. They had a choice. They made that choice and they reaped the whirlwind. Whether this is a suitable subject for a flight sim forum? Well its history now - luckily. 2

Lots of battles had questionable strategies, I'll give you that. But the Russians did prove that they could use sound tactics as well. The bloodbath in the last stages of the war was not due to Zhukov's incompetence, far from that. Stalin had given him a deadline to finish off Berlin in time for the May Day parade. "Or else..." was not an option. Some Russian commanders showed signs of tactical genius. Too bad the early soviet war doctrine discouraged tactical innovations. Aleksandr Pokryshkin's documentary I posted on the forum shows very clearly that there were competent commanders yet the war doctrine imposed by Stalin tied their hands (or got them shot or sent to work camps). It took some people with balls of steel like Pokryshkin, Chuikov, Rokossovsky and Malinovsky. Edited March 4, 2015 by 71st_AH_Chuck 1
