There's a WWII German built hangar on the place I work (in quite bad shape). Would you want some pictures?

Thanks Rama...I really appreciate it.....The wife and I are headed to Germany in September....and it's peaked my interest as to existing structures from the war, especially Luftwaffe....

Maybe you can get your hands on a copy of "Flugplätze der Luftwaffe - und was davon übrig ist" by Jürgen Zapf. "Airfields of the Luftwaffe - and what's left of them". He's written several volumes about ten years ago and went to visit and document the places as they look today (10 years ago). It's very interesting, but a quick look at amazon.com showed :o: prices and nothing available for Frankfurt and surroundings.

JtD...Thanks for the headsup...I've been doing a bit of research and I'm not sure if the two weeks I have planned..with the wife......(hehee) will allow me the freedom I'd like to climb around Germany and find these sites.  God willing, I'll be back though...We are going to visit some battle sites...and might even scoot up to Arnhem.  I'd go, just to see that bridge that was one too far.  I also want to visit some places in Belgium where my dad fought.  Still in planning stages right now...

Just don't expect too much, WW2 is much more present in other nations. WW2 isn't really considered a cause for celebration around here, and I'd say a lot was done to just forget as much as possible in the immediate post war years.

I have a WW2 air field nearby, where huge numbers of Bf109 were commissioned, at later stages even final production steps were carried out there. In 1945 it got bombed by the USAF. So it wasn't just an acre with a couple of tents, it even had a railway connection. Today, there's nothing left - it's just a field and a pony farm where the hangars used to be. So, besides the chill of knowing that 70 years ago this very field was full of factory fresh Bf109, I got nothing out of the visit.

I understand JtD...I will research before I venture out.....Thanks again.

Indeed there are very few historical location left in germany staying as reminders of the past. Most of them have either been totally destroyed in bombardments or have been renaturated. The airfield located at my hometown (Gelnhausen) was assinged to a fighter training unit in WW2 equiped with biplanes like the Bücker Jungmann and the Bf 108. Therefore it hasn't been bombed but captured by US forces and been used as a helicopter base for Apaches later on.

Today it's a civil airstrip with light motor and lider traffic. There's a museum nearby feauturing some remains of it's WW2 period, although it's just pieces and bits of aircrafts and the equipment.

Aside we have a original Wehrmacht barracks asisgned to a certain Panzerjäger company. It also was captured and used by US forces in cold war and later - ironicly - assigned the Bundeswehr . You can still see the hits of the .50 cal the Americans used to shoot up the sculptures and inscripts with.

That's probably more history than you'd usually see in other locations here in germany.

We are going to head over to Belgium and check out some of that area...especially Bastogne.  Currently reading a book on that particular battle just to be all the wiser....
