Ground Attack Missions In Campaign Spawn Too Many Planes

I'm having a performance related issue that I also think is a bug. In the ground attack type missions I'm finding in the last two campaigns (especially) that a large percentage of missions also include a lot of extra aerial battles going on around me that are not part of my mission. While I think this is a cool and great feature... having too many of these encounters happening at once is too much for my admittedly older PC from being able to handle. That said... I've got a Core i7, 12GB of DDR3 RAM, a GTX 570 and its no slouch.

 

The bug is that there was not one encounter, not two, but three were going on simultaneously. That was a formation of He111s and Bf109 fighter escort against some Yaks, and then some Stukas against some LaGG-3s and then some more Yaks and Bf109s. I'm down to single digit FPS and I have no control over it. Usually I'm running 40-50fps.
