Blitzen Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 This ack emma I got a Logictech ad in my email box & it remeinded me that it is ,perhaps time to replace my now failing & falling apart old logictech wired in gaming earphones that are 10+ years old.Rather than simply ordering immediately on of the new earphones pictured I thought I might appeal to the expertise found here.Back when I ordered these old ones ,one of the selling points was keying in voice commands instead of keyboarding themfo sims like Il-2.I haven't used this feature for years & don't even know if it still is viable. I am an almost exclusive SP in this & RoF & BoS,and would like a wireless set of headphones to eliminate some of the rat's nest at my feet.I do want reasonably good sound ,not only for the sim sounds but also for the music ( I tend towards Korngold symphonic soundtracks for back ground but also British bandsof the period,) but I am not interested in paying a fortune for the absolute best.So something reasonable under $100.00 that I can oder directly od through Amazon.Oh I have to be able to attach Track IR to them too ,which probably isn't a big deal. Ideas?
-TBC-AeroAce Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 I have a pair of £20 gaming headphones, as in the ones that vibrate to make a really basey noise. They are epic and cant play without them. Granted the sound quality is not the best they could be they are still epic for the price. They are called TDK ST600's NO JOKE EPIC FOR THE MONEY a real bargain
Jaws2002 Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 I was lucky with my last set of headphones. I have this Audio Technica ATH-A700X for about six years, since they were released and are just as soft, comfy and awesome like the day I got them. Before I got this, I went through a bunch of them of all shapes and prices. While this are most likely too pricy for your range, I'd still like to make one suggestion. Most things advertised as "gaming" are bad and expensive. 1

Most things advertised as "gaming" are bad and expensive. that's soo not true, well the expensive bit anyway, might be true for gamer branded ones. I saw a corsair set that were 80 when all the other gaming advertised ones were 20-50. I would suggest if not interested in features like the vibration get a standard pair of Sony or something from a company that does regular unstyled head phones
Adriaan Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 (edited) Yeah, the advertised gaming headsets are usually bad value for money. One relatively affordable pair of quality headphones is the Audio Technica ATH-M50. I've had one for a couple years, it gives good sound over the entire range, has rugged construction and sits comfortably on your head. Also helps that it sounds decent enough using just the mobo's onboard audio, though if you have a dedicated soundcard or DAC the sound quality will greatly benefit from it as with any headphones. Unless you get a used pair they're gonna be somewhat over the $100 price-range, but I'd say they're worth it. Edited February 26, 2015 by Adriaan
LLv24_Zami Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 I replaced Steelseries gaming headphones with Superlux Hd-330 about six months ago. It was a best deal of my life and it only cost me around 30 euros. They are absolutely superb quality for that price. They are comfortable to wear and very good for both gaming and playing music.
71st_AH_Mastiff Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Turtle Beach 7.1beast investment I ever made are theses separate controls for game sound and Team Speak voice.. you can even plug in your IPhone or android separate channels.. http://www.turtlebeach.com/product-detail/xbox-360-headsets/ear-force-xp-seven/340

Scott_Steiner Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 (edited) I use a 5.1 setup with home theater speakers for my gaming and typically don't use a headset. Though if I plug in a stereo headset into my soundblaster, it has a virtual surround mode to emulate the 3d enviroment. I thought it was going to be gimmicky as I did not believe you could do a good job with only 2 ear cups but I find it to be fairly impressive, at least with creatives algorithms. I used to have some 5.1 turtle beach headphones that were actually analog connectors, 3 of them, plugged into the back of your soundcard, left/right channel/ rears channel and center/sub channel... Each earcup had 3!! speakers in them! .. They sucked, you could not tell the fronts from the backs because the sound just bounced around inside the earcups.. The virtual surround of a USB headset is much better. I believe if you are a serious gamer that plays things competitively or wants immersion, having something that can do 3d surround is vital. The end result may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer though. If you find an analog stereo headset that you think looks really nice, you can always plug it into one of these for an extra $20 bucks: http://us.creative.com/p/sound-blaster/sound-blaster-play-2 and quite possibly get the best of both worlds. Blitzen Posted February 27, 2015 Author Posted February 27, 2015 I couldn't help but notice that most of the suggestions don't vere towards wireless. Is there a reason for this omission? Interesting to my current 'old" headset plugs into a USB port on my Track IR cable, but most of these new headsets look as if they 'plug" into a female plug in the rear of my PC...true?

Interesting to my current 'old" headset plugs into a USB port on my Track IR cable, but most of these new headsets look as if they 'plug" into a female plug in the rear of my PC...true? The reason for this is poor sound quality of wireless headsets versus wired ones. I would have preferred wireless set myself but quality of sound was much bigger factor for me. I think most of the headsets use the stereo mini plug so it is true.
Scott_Steiner Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 If you get a regular stereo headset or something that is more of a standard pair of headphones geared more towards audiophiles, it is going to be a stereo 3.5mm plug. If you are going with a gaming specific headset, most the new stuff is going to be wired USB or indeed, wireless.. but wireless is going to come at a premium price for you just being able to go take a whiz with them on. If it is marketed as a gaming headset but has a 3.5mm plug it will be stereo and also without fancy features, no software suite to modify setting, etc.
busdriver Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 From my reply on ATAG... Last month bought HyperX Cloud http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I got mine for $70, and I'm an Amazon Prime subscriber, so I'm not sure what they want for them if you're not. And the Track Clip Pro fits. I had checked several comparative reviews before buying. I think two other headsets were rated marginally higher, but were over $100 and heavier. Caveat...the connection is NOT USB. At first I thought that would be an issue, but now I actually use the headset and microphone jacks on my PC case. I'd buy them again.
SYN_Blackrat Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 I have the Logitech G35 on one machine and steelseries V2 on the other, sounds are about on a par with each other, the surround sound IMHO is a gimmick, the only time it seemed to work for me was in Teamspeak when I could move voices around. The G35 I find uncomfortable, the steel series on OTOH are superb comfort wise, that head band is a revalation, I bought the white ones because they were cheaper than black both fully encase the ear so outside noise is minimal.
Bearcat Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Do you use the headphones for the entire experience or just for coms..? If you use them just for comms then get one of these and any inexpensive mini rca headset. Windows will see the USB device as a separate sound card and allow you to run comms through the headset and the sim through the speakers.. I have 3 of the under $2.00 and they work great.. I haven't had to rep[lace one yet.
Scott_Steiner Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 I use something like this for Teamspeak: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/koss-communication-headsets/1308657965.p?id=mp1308657965&skuId=1308657965 No need for good sound quality or 2 earphones since teamspeak isn't in stereo anyways. Having only 1 ear piece allows you to hear more from your external speakers.
